From the bakery, typically Portuguese breads like 'broa de milho' (which is corn-based but NOT corn bread) or Alentejano bread (from the region of Alentejo.) Or 'pão com chouriço' which is a small, chunky single-serving bread with chorizo inside. Freaking delicious.
When I lived in the UK, I usually went for corn bread, ciabatta, seeded roll, ancient grains or sourdough. Three cheese or a cheesy roll if I wanted to feel unhealthy. |

dude wtf even is this comment. If your sourdough toast is impossible to cut then you have obviously toasted it too much. If it's somehow damaging your cheeks then you are eating it wrong. Are you putting an entire slice of burnt sourdough in your mouth and just storing it in there like some kind of toaster-inept chipmunk? Please explain yourself |
fogza
02.17.21 | "Are you putting an entire slice of burnt sourdough in your mouth and just storing it in there like some kind of toaster-inept chipmunk? Please explain yourself"
I only eat sourdough when at establishments - I would never buy it as a house bread. So I'm not the one doing the toasting. It's usually sliced too thick because it gives off this wholesome peasant bread vibe which probably makes the kitchen staff feel it should be sliced like that. And it's just too crusty and when toasted, this compounds into a slicing issue. It's just an awkward bread that was clearly designed to be dipped into soups by scallywags and highwaymen, who don't care if they have to rip the bread with their hands and teeth, and they certainly don't care about how they look in polite company. It is a crap breakfast bread, period.

02.17.21 | I do not know country break, so can't comment there. I'm okay with ciabatta, although it is a little chewy... sometimes tough to get through a big piece. Mostly ciabatta isn't served with breakfast, the slices are smaller, and it's not as hard. So I feel it hasn't encroached on a meal that it's ill-suited to. Naan is amazing, you are correct, especially garlic naan. I don't know if garlic naan is authentic, but it's delicious. |

02.17.21 | You don’t like chewy bread but you like naan? You don’t like crusty bread with breakfast? This isn’t some new trendy thing that millennials are doing, that’s like, the classic breakfast bread. Not necessarily sour dough but thick cut and crusty. How else are you gonna pop that runny yolk and soak it all up?? You’re very confusing |
fogza
02.17.21 | "You don’t like chewy bread but you like naan?"
Ciabatta is more dense than naan... surely? And I didn't say ciabatta is the devil or anything.
"You don’t like crusty bread with breakfast?"
There are limits. I mean c'mon, some of these sourdough slices are 2 cm's thick, with hard as nails crust. You try to slice it and the center of the bread comes away from the crust. You're left with the elastic-y center that shrinks up, and a ring of crust that is hard to utilise. Not an optimal bread / yolk soaking combination. Perhaps I've just never had good sourdough or something.
|
WeepingBanana
02.17.21 | Ciabatta usually has a way bigger crumb than naan. Also dense =/= chewy. And what you’re describing has literally never ever happened to me with sourdough.

robertsona
02.20.21 | butter seems essential to me cant lie. cant do it. I cannot tell a lie. George Washington |
Trebor.
02.20.21 | High grade olive oil is definitely better but it's not a dealbreaker for me |
WeepingBanana
02.20.21 | Yeah I mean sautéing some veggies I mostly reach for the olive oil but having a fat that’s solid at room temperature is key to making dozens of things, all of which happen to be insanely delicious. Also Indian food wouldn’t taste the way it does with olive oil instead of ghee. It’d still be great of course, and I’m not gonna pretend like I keep ghee well stocked lol, but it just doesn’t have that same sum’n sum’n |
Trebor.
02.20.21 | I kind of gave up on trying to make Indian food at home cuz I never remember to buy ghee lol |
Colton
02.20.21 | nah indian food doesn't need ghee trust me. It's mostly about the spices. But ghee is great |
Ryus
02.20.21 | high quality olive oil is hte best thing ever |
budgie
02.20.21 | dippin some nice bakery bread in good olive oil is fuck |
robertsona
02.20.21 | this is a potentially dumb question but what's a food thing that DOESNT seem to get all that much better the more you pay for it? if olive oil is an example of the opposite [according to ryus et al.? is that what im hearing?]...feel free to go off....... |
Colton
02.20.21 | Chicken nuggets |
Ryus
02.20.21 | yea probably fried chicken or somethin like that |
WeepingBanana
02.20.21 | Lol Colton you know ghee is butter right? |
Colton
02.20.21 | Basically any kind of spread or condiment like peanut butter, cream cheese, ketchup, most natural foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc. The ceiling is pretty low for those I feel |
Trebor.
02.20.21 | Doughnuts are a good example, the best are often the cheapest, whereas some hipster doughnut named after an 80s emo album will run you like 3 dollars and taste half as good as your local shop run by an asian couple |
robertsona
02.20.21 | my favorite kind of donut by far is the plain cake so I definitely feel that |
Colton
02.20.21 | Ghee is a type of butter yes |
hal1ax
02.20.21 | peanut butter is a good one yea. the expensive shit barely tastes different from the cheap stuff. you're basically just paying for the organic tag or whatever |
Trebor.
02.20.21 | I sort of disagree about peanut butter because I feel like the difference between skippy and peter pan or whatever cheap shit is noticeable in the texture. Expensive over skippy doesn't matter tho |
WeepingBanana
02.20.21 | I’m prob gonna get blasted for this and maybe I deserve it but I do not give a flying fuck about nice coffee. Coffee is a purely utilitarian thing for me |
robertsona
02.20.21 | thats honestly a great position to be able to take. if one were to care about nice coffee it seems like it could really burn a hole in their pocket. NOT talking about ME.... |
WeepingBanana
02.20.21 | I’ve had nice coffee, and I can recognize it as being nice, but I’m 100% a buy the huge tub of pre ground Folgers type guy and I can’t really ever see that changing. Sometimes I’ll throw turmeric and cinnamon in the grounds tho and that’s kinda nice |
Colton
02.20.21 | instant coffee gang
i don't really care what it tastes like I'm in it for the caffeine |
hal1ax
02.21.21 | yea i can see being indifferent about coffee if you're just in it for the effect since caffeine content is similar regardless of the roast quality. i genuinely like the taste of coffee though so i usually get the higher end stuff. |
budgie
02.21.21 | this is a potentially dumb question but what's a food thing that DOESNT seem to get all that much better the more you pay for it? if olive oil is an example of the opposite [according to ryus et al.? is that what im hearing?]...feel free to go off.......
gonna say mexican food
best mexican food is like a $4 california burrito from some alejandros/robertos/filiburtos styled hole in the wall
and if youre getting your burrito from a hipster store where its $16 its probably gonna be trash |
robertsona
02.21.21 | oh yeah for sure thats a good answer. tacos at taqueria izucar where they were like $1.50 (which isn't as cheap as tacos get, but good for NYC) in Brooklyn were better to me than the tacos in long island city I got at a valentines dinner where they were [GULP] |
hal1ax
02.21.21 | uhh yea that;s mostly true but i went to a michelin-star oaxacan style mexican joint once in LA and it was like the best food ever so idk. |
Ryus
02.21.21 | fancy restaurants are probably my favorite luxury |
Winesburgohio
02.21.21 | the street food in Oaxaca was crazy good. sheep's brain tacos boys |
Colton
02.21.21 | I ate cow brain one time as a kid. It tasted like egg yolk. Very much grossed out by it looking back. Just feels like a cursed thing to do lol |
Ryus
02.21.21 | yea brain is not my fav. tripe and tongue is where its at |
budgie
02.21.21 | liver is king |
Winesburgohio
02.21.21 | lamb's fry >>>>. but I like brain (in both senses of the word)! Lovely candyfloss texture complemented the taco nicely |
Ryus
02.21.21 | i like offal a lot except for liver, which disappoints me greatly :[
i feel like im missing out on a lot |
DrMaximus
02.21.21 | Cheeks |
Trebor.
02.21.21 | "uhh yea that;s mostly true but i went to a michelin-star oaxacan style mexican joint once in LA and it was like the best food ever so idk."
I think I've been to the same place. There was like one thing on the menu I could get as a vegetarian |
Colton
02.21.21 | Have you guys ever tried d’italiano bread? Best bread you can get outside of bakery bread imo |
