Selected Deadmau5 Works Vol. 8

Often maligned and misunderstood, the music of deadmau5 pays homage to the giants whose shoulders they dance on, and deserves a second chance from those willing to give it. Below you will find eight ‘deep cut’ deadmau5 tracks that may have missed the ears of those just skimming the surface of his discog.

At Play

"Vanishing Point"

If there was a litmus test for 'Electro House,' this would be the track to pass. Those with a patient ear who also enjoy twinkling, ethereal moments like “Strobe” and “I Remember” will find a cozy home here.

Vexillology

"1981"

There are a few different versions of this on various deadmau5 releases, but the OG version on Vexillology is the easy pick. I imagine this is what hold music sounds like in the waiting room for heaven, for those who spent their earthly days raving. It features a beautiful descending bassline with squishy, Tron-like stabs, and relaxing progressive synth washes that would surely please a lounging Greek god.

Vexillology

"Plus"

Wouldn’t sound out of place in a contemporary rominimal set. Delicious sound design with an array of skittering hats and y2k conveyor belt sonics. Almost sounds like the Windows XP Pinball game on speed.
4Deadmau5
Full Circle

"Cyclic Redundancy"

Somewhere between 4x4 and broken beat; fuses microhouse and progressive house with soothing simplicity. Sinternet recently mentioned in the electronic music server that it sounds like Efdemin and I’d have to agree.

Vexillology

"Orca"

Feels like you’re one of those cars in AudioSurf, except the level is in an aquarium, you’re going mach 5, and there are strobes pulsing from under your skin. Pretty sure deadmau5 sampled one of the piano strokes from Pink Floyd’s “Echoes” on this one.
6Deadmau5
Get Scraped

"Satisfaction"

“Get Scraped” is a peculiar part of the deadmau5 discog, one where the man in the ma5k seems to let his imagination run a little more wild. The production is less sleek, the influences are more diverse, and the scope is wider. This track is a delightful, rolling tech-house tune for the jubilant, carefree, sun-filled morning hours of a long party.

"Faxing Berlin"

Those in the know are familiar with this tune, and at first glance it may seem like an obvious pick, but somehow, “Faxing Berlin” isn’t held in *quite* the same regard in the mainstream as other breakthrough deadmau5 tunes. Its appearance on “Random Album Title” is basically a cameo—this version is the ‘Full Intention’ mix, so to speak, and is a perfect, summative reference point for the curious but unfamiliar.
8Deadmau5
It Sounds Like

"Jaded"

The sun’s coming up, or it’s an open air day party (maybe even on a boat?!) and the realization that we’re all connected, and everything always works out, somehow, is hitting you in the most serene way. Music for beaches.
