CONTEXT:
Themata has finally clicked for your favorite eight sided sputbutt (huzzah!), but let’s face it, the tracklist order could use some work. Part of what has always frustrated me about this album is the way ‘Vool seems to give little thought to the weight that its brand of ‘hyper-emotional nu-metal meets prog metal’ can have on the ears. What is actually this iteration’s strong suit becomes its weakness due to an imbalanced tracklist, where front loading and otherwise disorganizing the energy of the album results in listener fatigue, and the closing moments of the album don’t make the impact that they otherwise should. | | 2 | | Karnivool

CONTEXT (cont.):
I’ve attempted to counteract this by slightly tweaking the order of the songs, so that 1) the soaring moments and calmer moments of the album are more balanced, having space to shine, and 2) various outros of songs lead in to the next songs in a more thematically (heh) appropriate way (for instance, the electronic patch sounds of “Fear of the Sky” leads into the breakbeat-forward “Synops”; the ending guitar ‘fwunk’ sound of Mauseum leads into the quick riffing of the intro of “Shutterspeed”). The result is imperfect, but still improved, in my opinion.

07.13.23 | I don't usually go for these reordered tracklist things, but it felt appropriate here. I've listened to this album dozens of times this week after years and years of hating on it, and I hope my thoughts here might lead to opening the minds of other dissidents! I think without Mauseum earlier, the opening stretch is too bam bam bam just high energy songs one after another, and mauseum provides a sense of calm without being an actual acoustic tune like sewn and silent, so it still grooves nicely but gives us a little bit of time to reflect after the killer one two punch that is cote and title track. But dats just me

07.22.23 | Never felt any issues with the tracklist personally, the slower elements of Fear of the Sky come in just in time to avoid fatigue early on. That said, this looks like a good rearrangement. |
