I honestly think the OSDM revival is one of the most vital scenes in contemporary metal. It seems to have sprung up as a reaction to the bloat and pretension of the brutal and technical death metal scene, much in the same way that thrash metal was a reaction to glam metal. Nor do I think it is a regression, but rather the exploration of new textures in an old framework. OSDM is more moody and evocative, more about sinister vibes than brutal slams and overwrought technicality.
