Artists Most Underrated Albums

The black sheep in these artists discographies, the sleeper hits, the “contrarian” picks for best album... whatever you want to call them, these are the albums that I think are most underappreciated in their respective artists’ discographies, usually because the are overshadowed by more acclaimed/popular works.
1Radiohead
Amnesiac

Some people consider Radiohead the “saddest” band in the world, at least considering their popularity, so it makes sense their darkest, most subdued, and strangest album is underappreciated. Compared with the gorgeous flowing soundscapes of Kid A, Amnesiac is more industrial and claustrophobic. Strange sound effects abound on this album. It is possibly their least “catchy” album, besides maybe TKOL. Nevertheless, I love it. I remember having a high fever and listening to this album got me through the night. Something about the strange intimacy of the songs was comforting to me. Are there some duds here? Yeah, it’s one of Radiohead’s most inconsistent. But the absolute sorrow contained in tracks like “Pyramid Song” and “Glasshouse” makes it a standout to me.
2Pantera
The Great Southern Trendkill

This album is just brutal. Easily Pantera at their most extreme. This album completely throws away the thrash roots of the band and replaces it with explosive downtunes riffs. The riff on Sandblasted Skin practically set the stage for all the downtuned metalcore and djent of the 2000s. And the blistering opening scream on the opening track is possibly the best example of anger condensed into music. The lyrics are similarly biting. It doesn’t have the 90s metal hits of Vulgar, but Trendkill inhabits a world of its own.
3Sonic Youth
Washing Machine

I actually think the production on this album doesn’t do it justice. It’s too soft and not dynamic enough in my opinion, the dissonance doesn’t seem to penetrate your ears like it should. The live versions of these songs from Rockpalast 1996 are far better (Washing Machine live is an eargasm). But nevertheless, I think this is a strong contender for Sonic Youth’s best album. It sounds like no other music I’ve ever heard. It’s a little quirkier, creepier, and more subdued than albums like Goo and Sister.
4Queens of the Stone Age
Era Vulgaris

I love love love this album. I should probably write a review about it at some point, there’s just too much to unpack in a little blurb. While I think Songs for the Deaf is easily their best album, I have to give QOTSA props for coming up with a gnarlier, more industrial sound on this album. It’s probably their most experimental work.
5Lil Uzi Vert
Luv Is Rage

Compared to his later stuff, this is Lil Uzi at his most aggressive. He raps more traditionally on this project. The songs here just fucking bang. Later projects just don’t have the same vibe as this one. Especially with the Soundcloud bonus tracks, this project is just darker and more interesting than a lot of his later stuff, which is poppier.
6ASAP Rocky
Live.Love.A$AP.

I love cloud rap and this album is basically the gold standard. The beats (mostly handled by Clams Casino) are wavy and psychedelic. This album just has a swagger to it that later ASAP albums don’t. And songs like Wassup and Demons are legitimately beautiful.
7Deftones
Saturday Night Wrist

This album is Deftones most experimental effort. Toying with shoegaze and post-metal more than ever before, some songs on this album are absolutely gorgeous. There are some clunkers in the track listing but the number of criminally underrated songs on here (Kimdracula, Rivière) makes it one of my favorite Deftones albums.
