12.16.23 | Skinny Puppy's "Ain't it Dead Yet?" is critical to many in the fan base. Has the best versions of some of the songs. Doomsday isn't as critical but has important versions. And it has a better cover |
Avagantamos
12.16.23 | I don't think 49 counts. even if it did, including it on a best live albums EVER list is questionable |
kildare
12.16.23 | The version of Mandatory Suicide on the Slayer disc is the only version I go back to. I saw them live on this tour, and the studio version totally failed to capture the ferocity of that music. Critical album |

12.16.23 | @Avagantamos: If it counts for Tool fans, does it still not count? If it's just arena-level bands we're talking about then a bunch of these would be nixed |
Azazzel
12.16.23 | love a lot of this list too
also latin guitar, jazz-fusion, flamenco live, so well suited to the performance aspect
plenty of traditional brass jazz too of course but especially stuff like mad-man Fela Kuti's Nigerian Afrobeat jazz has insane live energy |
Avagantamos
12.16.23 | it's got nothing to do with being a fan or them being "arena-level" or not (which they absolutely are btw). opiate is an EP that has a couple live tracks included. that's not a live album. |
kildare
12.16.23 | Jazz seems to produce especially better music live than studio. It must be the improvisational element.
I'm not a Tool fan so really have no stake here. I think I'm just defensive about non-commercial bands. Maybe it's a sort of knee-jerk reaction I developed when my older sister changed boyfriends from a guy in a punk band to a guy with a mullet who loved Bon Jovi and Poison. Suddenly my music came under fire, so I'm goosey. There's no way to "prove" an album is great except popularity numbers within a genre, but high numbers tend to ruin a band imo, so it's a pickle how to decide what's "best." Ah, the tribulations of criticism |

12.16.23 | "That's not a live album" -- got it. Like I said I really have no stake in Tool.
Just out of curiosity, does Tool have a "classic" live album among fans? The Ministry for sure is a classic -- the end of Stigmata at the end of the album is an absolutely essential must-listen for industrial-metal fans. Except maybe for those fans who are religious, in which case maybe DON'T listen |

12.16.23 | don't usually dig live albums but this year i found 3 ill keep around
Les Rallizes Denudes - 77 Live
Boris - Smile -Live at Wolf Creek-
Shellac - End of Radio (peel sessions count?) |

12.16.23 | "And Sunday At The Village Vanguard!"
That one would be in my Top 10 too. Alice in Chains MTV is still my fav live album ever. The story behing the performance, Lanye singing while dying inside, Jerry sick and holding the urge to puke with a bucket by his side... That album is timeless, the performance still gives me the chills.
Still nothing but Top Quality in this list (from what I know so far) |

12.16.23 | funny how debate is around Opiate and not Happy Trails, which is even more debatable of a live album, but ill keep both on the list. ill add yalls other suggestions too.
@kildare i dont think they really have a classic live album among fans tbh |

BAT
12.17.23 | 'deicide - when satan lives' pretty much a better vers of serpents of the light alongside most of the important stuff from their first 3 albums, the last hurrah of the og lineup.
'nirvana - live at reading' pretty much nirvana at their peak, if anyone has trouble getting into bleach i'd highly recommend this as a way of getting into their pre-nevermind/bside stuff.
'king crimson - the great deceiver' like 4 hours of bruford era crimson recordings. if your more into the court era 'live at hyde park' has a great vers of epitaph.
'blue oyster cult - on your feet and knees' great entry point into the early era of BOC, their two live albums after this are also pretty great.
'depeche mode - 101' peak 80s depeche mode, solid tracklist.
'between the buried and me - colors live' honestly could probably just buy this instead of the studio version and get by fine, spot on performances with an added layer of rawness. |
