07.24.19 | You seem pretty big into metal, so Russian Circles would be a good jumping off point. |
EnyaFangirl
07.24.19 | young team is essential also standing outside in a thunderstorm is what got me to appreciate the genre so it's worth a try |
Artuma
07.24.19 | mogwai - young team
that's all |
deathofasalesman
07.24.19 | Jakob |
Relinquished
07.24.19 | pelican - the fire in our throats will beckon the thaw
mono - under the pipal tree
mogwai - come on die young
do make say think - & yet & yet
bark psychosis - hex
dirty three - ocean songs
red sparowes - at the soundless down |
Deathconscious
07.24.19 | God Is An Astronaut is really accesible, if thats what youre looking for. Bark Psychosis - Hex is an essential listen. |
MrSirLordGentleman
07.24.19 | Sigur Ros may be the most accesible band in the genre, but the one which summarizes its sound the best is Yndi Halda's Enjoy Eternal Bliss imo |

07.24.19 | how to get into post rock:
listen to post rock |
Jots
07.24.19 | jk, uhh
Don Caballero - For Respect |
MrSirLordGentleman
07.24.19 | Don Caballero is way closer to math than to post tho |
neekafat
07.24.19 | Talk Talk - Laughing Stock was the big one for me |
Jots
07.24.19 | @MrSir - if you mean they aren’t an aesthetic clone of sigur ros then sure, but in terms of what post rock fundamentally means then I’d say that album qualifies |

07.24.19 | "if you mean they aren’t an aesthetic clone of sigur ros then sure, but in terms of what post rock fundamentally means then I’d say that album qualifies"
Nah, I didn't mean that at all. I think Sigur Ros has a pretty approach to the genre. The "typical" sound of post-rock is for me the one of Yndi Halda, Explosions in the Sky and GY!BE ofc |
PunchforPunch
07.24.19 | You don't like your emotions being manipulated by minor scale and melodramatic crescendos, David? |
JDubb
07.24.19 | I second Russian Circles and Pelican. There are lots of great albums in this genre. |
Assemblage
07.24.19 | That's a good album to start with right there. Plus everyone else's recs's. |
twlight
07.24.19 | Hammock |
RogueNine
07.24.19 | The first few comments nailed it. Young Mountain and Young Team. |
JohnnyoftheWell
07.24.19 | Post-rock ABC (crescendocore):
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Yr Skinny First Like Antennas to Heaven
Red Sparowes - At the Soundless Dawn
(The) Slowest Runner (In All the World) - We, Burning Giraffes
Mono - Hymn to the Immortal Wind
Vibey post-rock (similar to the above but more atmospheric; some pretty, some creepy):
Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun
Mogwai - Come On Die Young
Slint - Spiderland
Grace Cathedral Park - In the Evening of Regret
Blueneck - King Nine (excellent intro album - this is as alt rock (with good vocals) as it is post-rock)
Interesting post-rock (more nuanced dynamics, different influences):
Bark Psychosis - Hex
Tortoise - TNT
Slowdive - Pygmalion
Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
toe - For Long Tomorrow
Oceansize - Frames (technically prog but with very prominent post-rock elements, a classic album either way)
Do Make Say Think - Goodbye Enemy Airship... OR Winter Hymn... (saw Relinquished rec'd & Yet & Yet, which is good but one of the less accessible post-rock albums imo)
Post-rock that ROCKS:
Everything that Jom rec'd
Envy - A Dead Sinking Story
O'Brother - Garden Window
Pelican - Australasia |
Deathconscious
07.25.19 | How bout that Vessels band, i forgot about them. |
Davyd120
07.25.19 | Thank you guys |
Oneironaut
07.25.19 | I think besides all these great recommendations for the core or essential listens, check out the 'more accessible' releases which (imo) are easier to digest.
Tides of Man - Young and Courageous
and then go with an updated genre staple, like:
Caspian - Waking Season |
naughtcturnal
07.25.19 | Swans - Soundtracks For The Blind
Ambient with post-rock leanings? I won't attempt to describe it. Just listen |
TheSpaceMan
07.25.19 | Don't do it |
MotokoKusanagi
07.25.19 | moving mountains - pneuma very accessible mixture of post rock / emo |
Assemblage
07.25.19 | Tides from Nebula - Aura
Definitely underrated |
dimsim3478
07.25.19 | gotta agree with dat very first rec, Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place. goes down so easy but doesnt make it any less of a masterpiece.
"Sigur Ros may be the most accesible band in the genre"
eh i dont think this is true of all their albums. Takk is probably the one i'd recommend for accessibility. |
