tyman's top 75 of 2022
What a year it's been. While I didn't listen to as many albums this year, some of my new favorite releases were from this year. Been a chaotic period in my personal life, but music has helped me through for sure. 10 | | Conjurer (UK) Pathos
sludgy post metal
Intense. That's about the only way I can describe this. It's filthy, dirty, and amazing. The riffs are ferocious and the vocal performances are immense. Even though "Pathos" was an amazing first listen, more and more features and subtleties revealed themselves over consecutive listens. Probably one of the more replayable albums of the year for me. Go ahead and give Gnocchi's paragraph a quick read for this monster!
"Those Years, Condemned" |
9 | | JID The Forever Story
hip hop/rap
If you know me, you know I'm not the biggest hip hop or rap listener, so for an album like this to be in the top 10 says a lot. The beats are catchy, the flows are insane, and the lyrics create a great story. I kept away from it for a while because I didn't think I'd enjoy it, and boy was I wrong. Give Rowan's review a read, it's a great one!
"Crack Sandwich" |
8 | | Lizzy McAlpine five seconds flat
indie folk/pop
Beautifully done indie folk and pop. With comparisons to contemporaries like Phoebe Bridgers, Lizzy McAlpine's "five seconds flat" is a fantastic combination of mellow, folkier tracks and energetic pop standouts. While I enjoyed it the first time I listened, it only continued to grow more and more, creeping its way up my list. Be sure to check YoYo's fantastic little review on this great record.
"orange show speedway" |
7 | | Julien Chang The Sale
jazzy indie pop
This didn't take long to sky rocket into my top 10. With its smooth and calm atmosphere, "The Sale" is full of beautiful melodies, vibrant instrumentation, and catchy grooves. Although it's rather unknown on here, if you enjoy some good indie pop with some jazzy touches, definitely give Julien Chang some of your time, you won't regret it.
"Crossed Paths" |
6 | | Orville Peck Bronco
country
This was a strong year of country for me. Although I'm still relatively new to the genre, Orville Peck is easily one of my new favorites. With his rich and powerful voice and strong instrumentation to accompany, "Bronco" proves itself to be not only one of the best in the genre, but one of the best of the year. Head over to Mathias' fantastic review of this record and give it a read!
"Hexie Mountains" |
5 | | Counterparts A Eulogy for Those Still Here
melodic hardcore
Even after all these years, Counterparts is still making heaters. I didn't think they could follow up "Nothing Left To Love," yet here we are. With its beautiful melodies and crushing riffs, "A Eulogy for Those Still Here" is intense and powerful. While it doesn't do anything new or different for the band, they continue to excel at what they do and build upon their foundation. Give Jesper's great write up a quick read if you have the time!
"Flesh To Fill Your Wounds" |
4 | | Ethel Cain Preacher's Daughter
ambient pop
This album destroyed me. "Preacher's Daughter" is just as captivating in its music but also in its storytelling. If you haven't listened to this album, I won't give away the story, but it's well worth your time to read through it as you listen. With its haunting, ethereal atmosphere, "Preacher's Daughter" is both beautiful and disturbing. Be sure to check Jesper's wonderful review to read more on Ethel Cain!
"Ptolemaea" |
3 | | Domestic Terminal All The Stories Left To Tell
indie rock
Shoutout to our bros YoYoMancuso and Bilbodabag for this amazing record. Improving on their last record, "All The Stories Left To Tell" is atmospheric, immersive, and emotional. This one really stuck with my on a lot of the songs, dealing with very personal matters and powerful stories. Give Sowing's review on this a read, it's a wonderful one!
"When The Oceans Ran Dry" |
2 | | The Callous Daoboys Celebrity Therapist
mathcore
This was almost my AOTY. Ever since "Die On Mars," I have been sold on these guys, and kept up with all they did since. Saw these guys back over the summer just before the album released, and knew that they would be releasing something amazing... but I didn't realize how amazing it would be. While maintaining their mathcore side, they went further into the weirdness and the melodic portions that they hinted with in their previous efforts. Want to read more about this? Go check out Mars' amazing review!
"Title Track" |
1 | | Zach Bryan American Heartbreak
country folk
This took a long time to decide, but yeah, this is my AOTY. Despite its massive duration, Zach Bryan's behemoth of a record is absolutely beautiful and astounding throughout. With a more polished sound, "American Heartbreak" showcases his amazing songwriting talent and emotional lyricism. If you wanna know more of my thoughts, just go ahead and check my review!
