butt.
07.02.19 | too lazy to think harder right now, what did I miss? |
DungeonBoy
07.02.19 | SO stoked about Midsommar. I refuse to watch any more trailers than the first glance I saw of it. Guaranteed to be weird, uncomfortable, and entertaining |
budgie
07.02.19 | this year is dreadful in horror, sorry. |
butt.
07.02.19 | @dungeon for sure! I've seen a teaser and a trailer, but neither one really gave away anything. all I know is that it will be gorrrry and effed up
@budgie .....
@budgie again: ok it was a slow start this year but we pickin up now. |
budgie
07.02.19 | no we aren't :( |
butt.
07.02.19 | how can you say that when there are 3 good horror movies in theaters right now
when was the last time that happened |
budgie
07.02.19 | what are those three good movies |
StrikeOfTheBeast
07.02.19 | I saw 1 and liked it. Definitely seeing 2-4 this year and am planning to ssee 2 and 3 this week. |
butt.
07.02.19 | 1. child's play
2. annabelle
3. midsommar
all three have positive rottentomatoes scores which is really not common for sequels and reboots |
budgie
07.02.19 | oook. buttboy let's go watch annabelle first before we start making any claims like that |
Larkinhill
07.02.19 | 1 was pretty bad imo (cool death scenes though). 3 was decent but pretty forgettable and not scary. It was definitely at least better than the first but can’t measure up to the damn good second. Seeing 2 tonight myself — hyped! Hereditary was amazing and the trailer looks great. Really looking forward to Scary Stories, was obsessed with the books as a kid and the director is great (Autopsy of Jane Doe was amazing).
Took my kids to see Aladdin and it was actually pretty decent — Will Smith was creepy in the scenes he was a blue genie though lol. But half of the scenes he just looked like regular Will Smith. |
zaruyache
07.02.19 | one of the theaters around here actually gets those A24 films so we seeing Midsommar this week and I can't wait. Hereditary was fantastic and I hate horror movies. |
TheNotrap
07.02.19 | I want to see Annabelle asap, but the movie I'm most looking forward to is IT Chapter 2. It has the scariest trailer I've seen in years:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqUopiAYdRg |
Egarran
07.02.19 | (I just saw The Ritual. Fuck the movie but all bm fans should read the book.) |
TheNotrap
07.02.19 | Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House is also a good summer relaxer, if you haven't seen it yet. |
budgie
07.02.19 | yeah i really enjoyed chapter 1. so i'm pretty excited for the follow up |
butt.
07.02.19 | oh I forgot about IT Chapter 2! hell yes! |
StrikeOfTheBeast
07.02.19 | Looking forward to IT chapter 2 as well. 2019 was definitely a breakout year for horror movies imo. |
budgie
07.02.19 | lol mike |
budgie
07.02.19 | i cant even respond |
StrikeOfTheBeast
07.02.19 | I'm talking as far as commercial exposure, not necessarily quality. |
Hawks
07.02.19 | IT 2 will rule, first part was amazing.
Agreed that the first Annabelle sucked ahrd but the second one was awesome so can’t wait to see the third. Was skeptical about Chimd’s Play but I’m prob still gonna see it.
Ma was damn good too although it was a bit cheesy and weird. Dug the plot ahrd though. |
butt.
07.02.19 | Oh forgot about Ma. Also never got around to Happy Death Day 2 which I had looked forward to. Shit, strangers things 3 about to drop too! |
budgie
07.02.19 | breakout lol. 2014 had it follows & babadook. 2015 had the witch etc. what on earth is making 2019 a breakout year?? |
butt.
07.02.19 | I'd say it's not a breakout year, but another solid year adding to a hot 5 year streak. "Us" was pretty good too, and just last October we got a highly praised Halloween sequel. Lots of big names sticking their hands in the horror jar lately |
budgie
07.02.19 | i thought us was terrible lol. gave it 2/5 on letterboxd ;(
so far 2019 is BREAKING the streak of great horror years of the decade |
Hawks
07.02.19 | Us was cool but I wouldn’t say it was great. I liked it though. |
butt.
07.02.19 | yeah, once again, if it received critical acclaim then I'm considering it part of this streak. budgie you dont have to like Annabelle, but when ~70% say something is good, then it is generally considered to be good. the only real stinkers I can think of this year are The Nun and La Llorona |
Larkinhill
07.02.19 | My god, was The Nun awful. |
DungeonBoy
07.02.19 | oh boy, US was okay, but I expected it to be amazing, so in turn it was pretty disappointing if that makes sense. Get Out was >>> |
Larkinhill
07.02.19 | Agreed with Dungeonboy re Us. Was ok but extremely disappointing. I actually felt the same way about Get Out. |
DungeonBoy
07.02.19 | The Nun was terrible agreed. Didn't even realize it was related to * SPOILER Maybe IDK * the Conjuring till the flashbacks came up. |
butt.
07.02.19 | yeah Us was a bit disappointing only because it didn't live up to Get Out |
Rowan5215
07.02.19 | Us > Get Out tho |
PunchforPunch
07.02.19 | lol nah |
Egarran
07.02.19 | Wait, Annabelle 2 was good? Do I have to see the first? |
butt.
07.02.19 | nah, there is a storyline but I don't think it matters that much |
Divaman
07.02.19 | I always had a problem with the Child's Play movies. They do a pretty good job of trying to make them look plausible, and they usually had Chucky threatening a kid, which was a little more believable. But it's just impossible to be scared by them. Because at the end of the day, the dude's a doll. Don't you feel like if he attacked you, you'd just punt him Narnia? |
Hawks
07.02.19 | Annabelle 2 was fantastic. First one was absolute garbage.
Also Get Out is way better than Us. |
Arditi
07.02.19 | Can't wait to see Scary Stories. I grew up with those books. Edit: Also like to see Midsommar and Childs Play. |
brainmelter
07.02.19 | Get Out is way better than Us.[2]
And I’m seeing Midsommar as well tonight, already got tix |
kris.
07.02.19 | i read an early script for midsommar and its pretty fucked
really excited to see it |
Larkinhill
07.02.19 | @egarran Annabelle 2 is actually very good and pretty scary. No, you don’t have to see the first. In fact, I highly suggest you don’t — otherwise you might claw out your eyes and never get a chance to see part 2. |
Larkinhill
07.02.19 | Seeing Midsommar at 7:15 tonight (PST). Will report back. |
DungeonBoy
07.02.19 | Nice man, definitely gonna try and catch it this week |
Egarran
07.02.19 | Thanks Larkin.
Does Chernobyl count? I saw that. 7/10 |
heck
07.02.19 | that Child's Play """reboot""" was legitimately the worst thing I have ever seen in theaters and I got dragged to God's Not Dead by my parents |
Larkinhill
07.02.19 | Brother, only a 7 for Chernobyl? I thought it was phenomenal and a definite 10/10 but to each their own.
Yeah the first ep was pretty horror-ish, second ep too when we got to see some of the physical effects of the first responders. |
Larkinhill
07.02.19 | @hellscythe I thought it was pretty awful too. The first half wasn’t too bad and kept me fairly entertained but good god did it go off the rails in the second half. Became laughably bad. |
Egarran
07.02.19 | 7 is low but I definitely thought it could be even better. Also it was sold to me as cosmic horror so I had very high expectations.
Still, I like the idea that it's an Old One spreading madness and disease. |
Egarran
07.02.19 | Sorry, I... I don't know.

budgie
07.02.19 | das stoopid! |
budgie
07.02.19 | ok let's see
polaroid was shit
escape room was shit
the silence was just barely not shit but still nowhere near good
curse of la llarona was shit
us was not good
the prodigy was not good
happy death day 2 u was OK i guess but it's the exact same thing as the first film, was almost annoying that it didn't do anything else with the story. just cashed in on an extension i guess? not a great film anyway. was ok.
haunting of sharon tate was shit
i trapped the devil was shit
assimilate was shit
mercy black was watchable i guess but not great
hole in the ground was watchable
braid was bleh
the perfection was rofl retarded
headcount was not great lol
boar was not good
book of monsters was actually good & fun!
the final wish was shit
break out year for horror right guys??? |
Larkinhill
07.02.19 | 7 is low but I definitely thought it could be even better. Also it was sold to me as cosmic horror so I had very high expectations.
Still, I like the idea that it's an Old One spreading madness and disease
Damn if that’s how it was sold to you, I can see why you may have liked it but not loved it. It’s for the most part very restrained, calculated and talky. But the dialogue and story were so good that it didn’t bother me at all. |
Larkinhill
07.02.19 | happy death day 2 u was OK i guess but it's the exact same thing as the first film, was almost annoying that it didn't do anything else with the story. just cashed in on an extension i guess? not a great film anyway. was ok.
That’s exactly how I felt about it. Too samey. The first one was good because it was clever and inventive. The sequel felt pretty stale, but still was well written, acted etc and fairly entertaining. Like a 6/10. My daughter likes it a lot but she’s 12. |
Rowan5215
07.03.19 | Us is exactly the kind of overlong, patchy, self-indulgent passion project I want and expect from a second film of a filmmaker who'd hit massively big with a safer, more formulaic first one
that's not a knock against Get Out at all but Us is more unique in its vision and execution and has images which stay stuck in my head in a way Get Out never had which is why I prefer it. Us also has a far, far better ending |
Larkinhill
07.03.19 | Completely loved Midsommar. Absolutely bonkers insane and creepy as hell. Such a sense of dread as you watch in unfold. Like a car crash you can’t look away from. Definitely in line quality wise with Hereditary. Was also very funny at times.
But I don’t want to overhype it for anyone. It’s great, but weird and loopy as hell. |
butt.
07.03.19 | yeah that shit was wackkkkkk! which is exactly what I was expecting. some of those scenes near the end were so uncomfortable, and I was glad he took it as far as he did. I loved it but have no desire to rewatch it anytime soon. What a gorgeous movie though, the trippy effects and the gore....damn. Hereditary is still the better movie to me, and while acting in both was superb, you just can't beat Toni Collette's performance |
brainmelter
07.03.19 | yeah hereditary is better for sure. Movie was good but it was surprisingly predictable tbh it went everywhere I expected it to. Hereditary threw me for a loop more. a lot of the characters were highly unlikable. The best part was that one scene.. with naked women in the house and Christian. the theatre was laughing so hard because they were so uncomfortable. Best part for me tbh because that shit wasn’t even that funny but people were dying of laughter to hide their uncomfortableness. Gold |
brainmelter
07.03.19 | also hereditary was a lot more subtle and nuanced. This movie was more ham fisted and presented almost everything at face value. Immediately after I saw hereditary I felt I needed to see it again but that wasn’t the case here. I feel like I don’t need to see it again and not in a bad way but yeah. I think i just had too high of expectations because I saw most of the ‘twists’ coming from the first 20 minutes of the movie. Maybe I’m just desensitized and knew what to look for this time around. All the symbolism and metaphors they wanted to hit you with, they kind of hit you over the head with. You get everything at face value. I sound like I’m bashing it, it was good. Just a kind of a disappointing follow up to hereditary, especially because it hit a lot of similar plot beats and outcomes. Multiple plot holes too. I mean they’re two different movies but they’re also two crazy zealot cult movies were the main characters are powerless to their plans. Cinematography is great of course though |
Larkinhill
07.03.19 | I dunno guys, I might have slightly preferred Midsommar. Will have to watch again to say definitively. But it’s subjective in this case — it’s not like far outpaces the other as to where it’s obvious which is better. |
Larkinhill
07.03.19 | I don’t think this was supposed to be unpredictable. In fact, I think it was purposefully predictable. One of those cases where the audience is SUPPOSED to be ahead of the characters. The fun is in the dread leading up to it, scared for the characters fates, watching it all transpire and how the characters react.
Just a different a type of movie to Hereditary imo.
And what’s with Ari and weird looking blond kids lol. |
Larkinhill
07.03.19 | The characters perspectives when they were tripping and the visuals were fucking spot on. So accurate that I instantly felt like I was tripping lol. |
butt.
07.05.19 | that scene where they were tripping on the hill near the beginning was fucking hilarious. will poulter's best scene in the movie for sure |
Larkinhill
07.05.19 | Lol yup. “ I don’t want any new people right now”. I actually said and heard others say this while tripping before. It was spot on lol. Loved Poulter. He was great in Detroit too. Should have been It damnit! Just imagine how good he’d have been. |
butt.
07.05.19 | woulda been great, but skarsgard does an amazing job as well |
budgie
07.05.19 | anyone see i am mother? thought it was ok but toward the end sort of lost footing, idk. got some cool half life vibes from it though
story was pretty similar to 10 cloverfield lane (which was a damn masterpiece) |
butt.
07.05.19 | dont think I've even heard of it tbh... |
Gyromania
07.05.19 | these all look fucking terrible with the exception of midsommar |
budgie
07.05.19 | @buttboy 10 cloverfield or i am mother? i am mother is a netflix production. 10 cloverfield was a bigger production maybe, had john goodman & mary elizabeth winstead |
butt.
07.05.19 | oh yeah I loved 10 cloverfield, was referring to i am mother |
budgie
07.05.19 | i rec checking it just b/c the dystopian sci-fi vibe is fun, but the film isn't a masterpiece. it's also not really a horror film haha but maybe edges toward the genre in ways |
Deathconscious
07.05.19 | I pretty much eat up dystopian sci fi regardless of how good it is, i have a major soft spot for that sort of thing. |
Gyromania
07.05.19 | "1. child's play
2. annabelle
3. midsommar
all three have positive rottentomatoes scores which is really not common for sequels and reboots"
you really shouldn't use rotten tomatoes as an evaluation of movies lol. lots of terrible movies get great reviews and lots of great movies get terrible reviews (like the house that jack built) |
butt.
07.05.19 | i mean yeah, you're not wrong. but when a movie has positive critic AND audience scores...that's a good indication that it's not a bad movie lol. And I find that I agree with critic's consensus like 90% of the time, so it's a good indicator for me. |
budgie
07.05.19 | i completely ignore popular considerations for horror movies. all the james wan fare seems popular but i hate it all, whereas the blackcoat's daughter & lake mungo are both at like 6.0 or under on imdb. annabelle being positively received means nothing to me at least. & my horror buddy said it was trash already so... figure he's probably right. still going to check it though
FWIW he gave midsommar a 5/5 so there's some excitement still for this year :P
i loved IT chapter 1 so the next installment is the big thing for me, can't wait for that |
butt.
07.05.19 | midsommar was great, but probably not 5/5 great. Hereditary was probably better as a horror movie. |
budgie
07.05.19 | so i feel like hereditary is pretty overrated, lol. i think it's a great film but people are calling it the film of the decade (for horror). gets a lot of praise about the acting for some reason but i felt like the acting was bringing me out of the movie. |
butt.
07.05.19 | toni collette's performance was the best acting performance I can think of, in any genre, from at least the past 5 years.
the son struggled at times, particularly with crying |
Larkinhill
07.05.19 | The Autopsy of Jane Doe and The Blackcoat’s Daughter are hands down my fav horror movies of the past 5-10 years (maybe more). Blackcoat is my number one. The atmosphere and dread man. My idea of a perfect horror movie. So creepy. The Witch would round out my trio.
There are others up there like this, Hereditary,The Babadook, The Conjuring etc but those two are best. Annabelle Creation, A Quiet Place and Ouija Origin of Evil would make the good/middle tier. Good but not great basically. |
budgie
07.05.19 | good top pics larkin, those 3 are all classic or near-classic by my estimation. there's a spanish film not too dissimilar from autopsy of jane doe in settings called the corpse of anna fritz. doesn't have the supernatural element but i thought it was really solid! spain in general is killer for horror films. let's see: tombs of the blind dead, la residencia, witching & bitching, [rec], aforementioned corpse of anna fritz, summer camp, the bar, what else am i missing.. |
Larkinhill
07.05.19 | Cool man, I’ll check some of them out. I’ve seen rec, very intense. |
Gyromania
07.05.19 | the witch is one of my favourites of the decade. i should really check out the other two you mentioned. |
Gyromania
07.05.19 | annabelle is ass though, the conjuring is w/e, ouija is lol-tier, and a quiet place was pre cool but i'd hardly call it a horror film. you name dropping those has me worried lol. but i love the babadook and hereditary! prob my 2 favourite horror movies of the decade, with the witch and it follows. possibly the new IT, i was really surprised by how much i liked that. |
Larkinhill
07.05.19 | Gyro — definitely do so man. Incredible movies. I think they’re both currently streaming on Netflix too.
I thought Ouija was good and it was because of Mike Flanagan. Best horror filmmaker around right now. Second Annabelle was solid imo (first sucked) and the first Conjuring was good at the time imo. |
Larkinhill
07.05.19 | And I wasn’t saying those were the best of the decade lol! Just saying they were decent horror movies bra. |
Gyromania
07.05.19 | downloaded both of them now. hope the autopsy one isn't just body horror shit, the blackcoat's daughter sounds pretty cool from what i read. gonna check 'em both out later tonight |
Larkinhill
07.05.19 | Yeah It Follows was good too! I liked IT and it was entertaining but I just hated how it really wasn’t scary at all. IT should be dark and terrifying, like the book. |
Larkinhill
07.05.19 | Chime back in man. Nah, Autopsy isn’t body horror. Creepy as fuck. The atmosphere is incredible and the way the story unfolds and how the plot is revealed is pretty genius. |
Gyromania
07.05.19 | i actually thought IT had some legitimate scares. a lot of scenes i could picture myself freaking out in. the ending was a bit of a letdown though. excited for the sequel |
Gyromania
07.05.19 | yeah i'll let you know my thoughts after i see 'em. i'm a BIG fan of supernatural horror, which is why i love the babadook so much. also the witch for how subtle it is, and how it becomes horror more so through the cinematography and mystery, slowly bubbling until it boils over. really genius way to convey horror, i thought.
what did you think of suspiria? |
Gyromania
07.05.19 | blackcoat's daughter has a rotten score from the users on rotten tomatoes so i already know it's going to be awesome |
Larkinhill
07.05.19 | Lol it is man. Such a slow burn and very psychological (which is what I prefer). From what I’ve heard here what you like in a horror movie, you should love it. It’s definitely that kindof movie where a lot of people will just say “this is terrible, nothing’s happening”, but there is so much going on. It’s kust more subtle and they’re too dumb/narrow minded to pick up on it lol. The lead actresses are phenomenal in it.
Really liked Suspiria. Especially that ending lol! As WTF as Midsommar, maybe more. Had to buy the blu Ray.
|
Gyromania
07.05.19 | yeah just noticed one of the actresses is the girl who plays sabrina, which is def a guilty pleasure of mine lol.
i caved and watched the trailer for midsommar and it's moved to the top of my things to watch. might even go see it before the new toy story. looks a lot like the endless, which was another movie i really enjoyed, except this looks far deeper and more visually stunning |
budgie
07.05.19 | gyro you should check lake mungo, solid ghost film. not so much jump scares though. still i think the best film ever made |
Larkinhill
07.05.19 | Yeah man, both Midsommar and Toy Story 4 are fantastic. |
Larkinhill
07.05.19 | Yeah Lake Mungo is solid.
You should both check out Eden Lake too! Excellent horror movie. |
Gyromania
07.05.19 | hmmmm. is it based on a 'true' story? because i don't actually believe in ghosts, so if it's framed in a way where the audience is supposed to believe it's real, i probably won't like it a lot |
Larkinhill
07.05.19 | Lake Mungo? Tbh can’t remember, been awhile since I watched. |
budgie
07.05.19 | lake mungo i don't think is based off of anything. |
Gyromania
07.05.19 | i have one that beats out both of those lake movies - lake placid. 10/10 movie, easily the best in the entire genre |
budgie
07.05.19 | i couldn't finish eden lake lol. i also couldn't finish funny games. too brutal |
budgie
07.05.19 | the endless was dope, did you watch the prequel? |
Gyromania
07.05.19 | i didn't know there was a prequel |
budgie
07.05.19 | yeah it's called Resolution. i think i liked it more than The Endless. check it for sure |
brainmelter
07.06.19 | Came in to say that Lake Mungo is cool and Suspira is amazing |
Larkinhill
07.06.19 | Agreed. |
Larkinhill
07.06.19 | @brainmelter — if you like Suspiria, definitely check out Midsommar. |
Gyromania
07.06.19 | the blackcoat's daughter is... wow. maybe a masterpiece. |
Iamthe Nightstars
07.06.19 | I wasn't big on Hereditary but it had its charms. Maybe I'll like Midsommar better? |
Larkinhill
07.06.19 | the blackcoat's daughter is... wow. maybe a masterpiece
Hell yeah brother, I knew you were on the level. |
brainmelter
07.06.19 | @lark reference to the comments above for my thoughts on midsommar |
Larkinhill
07.06.19 | I’m really looking forward to Scary Stories. Not sure if it’ll be a GREAT movie (looks positioned more like a thrill ride/rollercoaster (a la IT, The Conjuring etc), than an actual great, scary horror movie, but I grew up reading those books man, some of those stories/pictures were nightmares from my childhood. Intense nostalgia. Told my 12 year old daughter I would take her (I bought her all the books when she was 7/8).
Andre Overdal, The director, was also the director of The Autopsy of Jane Doe. That movie was so amazing that they gave him the reins for the big, iconic Scary Stories movie. Guillermo Del Toro is producing but that probably means fuck all tbh. |
Gyromania
07.06.19 | i loved the pacing, some of the best atmosphere and cinematography i've seen in a horror movie in recent memory. also the score, damn. and here i thought i'd already seen the top tier horror movies from this decade. this has me rly pumped to check out the autopsy of jane doe now, which i'm going to do very soon. cheers for the recs. |
Larkinhill
07.06.19 | Dude yes, the soundtrack and sense of dread were unbearably tense at times. Just creepy nerve wracking stuff man. Has that slight Lynch-Ian feel. |
Larkinhill
07.06.19 | This is exciting shit talking to a guy who knows what good horror constitutes but hasn’t seen the two best in awhile. These are the true stars, not The Conjuring and IT (though I enjoyed both).
The Autopsy is ALMOST as good but not quite. An amazing and batshit creepy horror movie. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts. |
Gyromania
07.06.19 | agreed, i definitely got lynch vibes, and i love david lynch (eraserhead is one of my faves). the ratings for this movie are fucking abysmal. honestly i'm not surprised. any horror movie that the audience has to think about and isn't outright explained usually gets shit ratings (like the house that jack built, although i wouldn't call that a horror movie per se). |
Larkinhill
07.06.19 | Yup, exactly. You get it man! Not enough people do. |
Rowan5215
07.06.19 | Blackcoat's Daughter and Resolution are my two favourites of the decade, just chiming in there
y'all might like Coherence and Berberian Sound Studio along similar lines |
Thalassic
07.06.19 | Looks like I'm gonna have to check out The Blackcoat's Daughter |
Larkinhill
07.06.19 | You do man. As if your life depends on it. |
Gyromania
07.06.19 | rowan: coherence is a top 20 of the decade for me. must have watched it like 7 times since first seeing it a couple years ago. |
Larkinhill
07.06.19 | You guys seen Enemy w/ Jake Gyllenhaal? Directed by Denis Villeneuve. Amazing, four star movie. Great creepy and surreal atmosphere. Very obviously influenced by Lynch. |
Rowan5215
07.06.19 | Enemy was very very good yeah, probably my second faovurite Villeneuve after Blade Runner 2049. really need to watch it again
Coherence is one of my favourite movies and man it just gets better every time you see it, the hidden detail in that movie is incredible |
Gyromania
07.06.19 | larkin: have not seen it but will download. you and rowan seem to know what's up when it comes to film, def want more of the stuff we've been discussing.
blade runner 2049 was SO good. i know a lot of people didn't seem to like it but it might be my favourite movie that year. granted i actually haven't seen the original. and yeah the subtleties in coherence really reward repeat viewings. when i watched it for a second and third time with my sister and friend afterwards, i remember thinking "man, so much of this is going to go completely unnoticed by them" |
Rowan5215
07.06.19 | the original Blade Runner is pretty shit with some gorgeous set design and Rutger Hauer sometimes saving the scenes he's in. it's more influential than good, hence the reputation it has, but 2049 was just massively better in almost every way. one of my favourites of the decade |
Winesburgohio
07.06.19 | *spoiler for Coherence's layers*
Took me until the third viewing for me to realise the significance of that whole 'understudy' conversation and it's so naturally done!! |
Rowan5215
07.06.19 | Nicholas Brendon's troubles irl make a heartbreaking (and imo essential) extra layer to his character in that movie |
budgie
07.06.19 | coherence is great. |
budgie
07.06.19 | there's a release on wax of the blackcoat's daughter's score which i don't think is expensive. def recommended, the score is fun (and super creepy) |
TheNotrap
07.06.19 | The Exorcist is still the scare. Halloween #2 |
budgie
07.06.19 | i have a sweet exorcist shirt i love to wear haha. i actually don't love the film though, don't think it holds up all too well. halloween is still a perfect film by my rankings |
TheNotrap
07.06.19 | It still has the most putrid vomit and spinning head ever recorded... |
budgie
07.06.19 | yeah! & the spidercrawl scene is still one of the coolest horror moments in history. |
Gyromania
07.07.19 | yo rowan, i checked out enemy last night. really good movie, lots of subtext to unpack, which i love. at first i wasn't sure what the spider was a symbol of, but it's all pretty clear now. i interpreted it as: he has split personality disorder (i thought this was cleverly hinted at early on when he rounds the corner as she calls him on the phone), and the spider, being a symbol of fear and anxiety, represents his reservations about commitment. that conversation they have towards the end as the car crash is happening was such a brilliant sequence, symbolically killing his other self, or so he thought until the final frame when he sees the giant spider. that half smirk says to me "looks like i can't change after all", but maybe i'm just too cynical lol. it's def open-ended. i think this cements villeneuve as one of my favourite directors. arrival, bladerunner 2049, and prisoners are another 3 of my favourite movies from this decade.
also, i thought the colour palette in the movie was another great subtextual detail. i think the whole split personality thing has been done to death, but i don't mind it when it's conveyed this well. |

07.07.19 | gonna watch the autopsy and lake mungo today |
butt.
07.07.19 | Damn you guys are going hard over here! Wanted to chime in say Lake Mungo is amazing and coherence is amazing, anyone reading who hasn’t seen those, hop on it ASAP.
I also saw Annabelle 3 last night, it was pretty fun but nothing too original (obviously). Acting was surprisingly really solid. 6/10 |
butt.
07.07.19 | Oh yeah Autopsy was also really good, I think it started to lose me at points towards the end, but the first half is a masterpiece in tension and dread. |
Gyromania
07.07.19 | ^ i feel that way about insidious. the former half is actually so damn good, and then the latter half totally loses me. devolves into a cheesy seance and the demon at the end looks pretty dumb |
butt.
07.07.19 | I can totally see that, but I still love it for some reason. The demon + tiny Tim music was a pretty unsettling combo for me haha. |
Egarran
07.07.19 | +1 for Coherence. I'm glad we can all come together over that.
It's a really good Twilight Zone episode. |
Gyromania
07.07.19 | check out calibre you guys. it's not a horror movie, it's a thriller, but i promise you won't be disappointed. |
Rowan5215
07.07.19 | good to hear it gyro, I haven't watched Enemy in a very long minute so I'm not sure I can offer a lot on interpretations, but I remember being convinced it was non-linear and you could piece together the actual timeline with clues in the movie. the spider effects stayed with me a looong time after watching that lol |
Rowan5215
07.07.19 | Lake Mungo fucks, it has one of the scariest moments I have ever seen in all seriousness |
Larkinhill
07.07.19 | Buttboy have you seen The Blackcoat’s Daughter? Get on it man. |
Larkinhill
07.07.19 | Gyro I feel the exact same way about Insidious man. |
butt.
07.08.19 | yeah I've seen blackcoat's daughter, it was good but didn't quite live up to the hype for me. The build was good but payoff wasn't totally there.
"Lake Mungo fucks, it has one of the scariest moments I have ever seen in all seriousness" YESSS that's one of the few movie moments that I truly have a hard time watching alone. Not much scares me anymore, but that scene fucks me up |
butt.
07.17.19 | anybody see The Dead Don't Die?
pretty average zombie flick. solid cast but there wasn't a single original thought put into the movie. Not a bad movie, but I'm just not sure why it was made? Zombieland's existence makes this movie completely unnecessary |
budgie
07.17.19 | yeah lake mungo destroyed me. |
budgie
07.21.19 | saw RAW and A.M.I.. RAW was great
A.M.I. was great too, i rec it if you like murder party. pretty bad/fun slasher |
Deathconscious
07.21.19 | Dead Don't Die trailer did look kinda funny, but im still burnt out on zombies, and yeah, with Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead out there, its like whats the point. |
budgie
07.21.19 | man ill never get burnt on zombies
that being said i dont know if ill even watch dead dont die, lol |
butt.
07.21.19 | It’s the kind of movie that makes you realize maybe you are burnt out on zombies.
But yeah Raw is pretty intense. Haven’t heard of the other one though, and Murder Party is like a 6/10 to me |
budgie
07.21.19 | ah if you didn't care much for murder party skip over A.M.I.
watching Double Date right now (2017) and it's fucking hilarious. but it's also extremely goofy comedy horror so. |
Confessed2005
07.21.19 | I watched Drag Me to Hell a few weeks ago and that is some disturbing shit. |
butt.
07.21.19 | Good movie. My ex always told me it was very dumb, mostly because of a talking goat or whatever. Fuck her, it was great. |
budgie
07.21.19 | seems sometimes ppl don't realize drag me to hell is a comedy film |
Larkinhill
07.21.19 | Drag Me to Hell is great but the last thing I would call it is disturbing lol. It’s way too ridiculous and over the top. That’s like saying the original Evil Dead is disturbing.
Speaking of Evil Dead, my god I love the fucking remake. Better than the original in my eyes. Now THAT is kinda disturbing, especially the tree/vine rape scene. Movie just feels kindof evil and I love that. |
budgie
07.21.19 | Better than the original I struggle reading that opinion haha. It is wicked though |
Larkinhill
07.21.19 | Lol sorry dude, something about it. And I love the original but I prefer my horror darker. |
Egarran
07.21.19 | >My ex always told me it was very dumb, mostly because of a talking goat
I see why she is your ex. |
butt.
08.19.19 | seeing Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark tonight, supposed to be pretty good yeah? |
Larkinhill
08.19.19 | Yeah it was entertaining. Fairly formulaic. But a decent watch. Great for fans of the books — the highlights were definitely the characters/ghosts brought to life — Me-Tie-Doughty-Walker was best, but the Pale Lady and Harold were awesome too.
Also saw 47 Meters Uncaged. Pretty fucking silly and stupid, but entertaining. I think it was intentionally laughable? I was laughing at least. That said, it was very repetitive. Characters swim in murky waters, shark pops out, they escape and/or someone gets killed, repeat. |
budgie
08.20.19 | the first one wasn't very good either, lol |
Larkinhill
08.20.19 | I actually never saw it. My 12 year old daughter liked the first and wanted to see the second. Silly as fuck but entertaining! |
budgie
08.20.19 | nice, the first one is worth watching because hey it's horror. i think they really messed up the ending though. could have been a pretty terrifying film but naw. also if you've ever scuba dived before it's kind of impossible to watch. the entire film is kind of impossible i guess |
Larkinhill
08.20.19 | Yeah I’ll give it a watch. I think it’s still on Netflix. |
budgie
08.20.19 | hit me up if you do brother |
Gyromania
08.20.19 | drag me to hell is so awesome.
You guys see that trailer for the lighthouse? I'm super pumped to see it, same with IT pt 2 |
butt.
08.20.19 | ok yeah I really liked Scary Stories, didn't realize it would be centered around halloween like that. Love the small-town, october setting and atmosphere. Felt like a mix between Trick 'r Treat and Goosebumps. And I loved the Harold segment so much that I went home and immediately watched Scarecrows (1988) which I had been putting off for some time
And yes I saw the Lighthouse trailer, very stoked. And the IT 2 trailer just gets me more giddy every time I watched it. |
Larkinhill
08.20.19 | You guys see that trailer for the lighthouse
So hyped. Looks phenomenal. |
butt.
09.06.19 | technically still summer right? Anyway I saw IT 2 last night and it was awesome. Definitely stays just as brutal as the first one. Hard R rating |
budgie
09.06.19 | fuckin hyped
i loved pt 1. |
budgie
10.22.19 | the sand is hilarious |
butt.
10.22.19 | I'm lost, what's that |
budgie
10.22.19 | https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3399484/ |
butt.
10.22.19 | 3.8! omg I have to see it |
PunchforPunch
10.23.19 | pretty shitty year for horror tbh. I've seen better domestic folk horror movies than Midsommar so watching rural folks doing some backwater voodoo shit doesn't really impress me. I'm watching a K-horror called 'Svaha' right now and hope it brings some spooky supernatural goodness. |
butt.
10.23.19 | I've been pretty content with horror this year. Nice mix of quality indie and blockbusters imo. Us, Annabelle 3, IT 2, Midsommar, Zombieland 2, Child's Play, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and The Lighthouse (haven't seen yet).
I'd give all those at least a 7/10 |
alamo
10.23.19 | yeah what about the worst horror movies of the year? 2018 had some real gems like the nun and slender |
alamo
10.23.19 | ohhh we had happy death day 2. thought it was absolutely horrendous, and i loved the first one
although they have very similar boxd/rotten ratings i think |
butt.
10.23.19 | i didnt think it was horrendous, but yeah a clear step below the first one which was pretty great |
PunchforPunch
10.23.19 | I don't think Zombieland 2 is horror man, more like road movie. Scary Stories looks spooky so I'll get on that. |
budgie
10.23.19 | been the worst year of the decade for me |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.23.19 | Did your blow up doll dump you? |
Iamthe Nightstars
10.28.19 | Wait, Scary Stories is PG-13? Think I'll pass. |
Larkinhill
10.28.19 | Scary Stories is fun. I mean, I’m not sure why you expect some violent R rated adult horror movie. It is, after all, based on a scary story compilation geared toward kids. I grew up with the books and was obsessed. The illustrations were imperative to making the stories work.
The movie isn’t great, but it’s a good and mildly spooky time. Lots of fun. Fans of the books should be happy. Lots of callbacks. |
Larkinhill
10.28.19 | The Lighthouse is fantastic, butt. See it ASAP. Tbh it’s more psychological thriller than psychological horror so don’t go in expecting a horror movie, but I guess either label works. |
butt.
10.28.19 | oh yeah, knowing the director I would not expect straight up horror. Planning on seeing it within the next week! |
