Albums I Loved Freshman Year

Something different for me, I thought it would be fun to revisit some of my favorite records from my freshman year of high school. I've elaborated on what I think of the record now in each of the descriptions, my music taste has changed quite a bit so try not to flame me lol
5Slipknot
Iowa

Summary: I REALLY thought that this was the heaviest shit back in the day (lol). For a mainstream metal band Iowa is a very raw and genuine record, which is essentially what makes it work. Corey Taylor's vocal performance is strong, with this record having some of his best unclean vocals to date. Lyrics are extremely melodramatic but Taylor often gets away with it because of the dark nature of the record itself. Instrumentation is okay at best with the drumming being the highlight.
Top Tracks: Gently; Disasterpiece; Skin Ticket
4Panic! at the Disco
A Fever You Can't Sweat Out

Summary: One of their better records although at this point in their career it doesn’t mean much. Super fun record to jam and sing along to with some real gems (Build God and But It’s Better If You Do being career highlights). Urie’s vocals are underdeveloped and ear-grating in places and instrumentation is pretty basic as far as 2000’s pop-punk goes. 2nd half of the record is where the band really shines, the pop-punk meets burlesque sound is still fresh and works surprisingly well.
Top Tracks: Build God, Then We’ll Talk; But It’s Better If You Do; Time to Dance
3Motionless in White
Creatures

Summary: This record was my shit. Instrumentation is pretty standard for metalcore, some cool drum moments and fantastic keyboard parts throughout. Screams are consistently great, but the clean vocals are nasally and lyrics are too melodramatic for their own good. The way stories from horror culture are told throughout the record is an interesting concept and although it's not done extremely well, it does add a sense of personality to the record overall. The record's gothy-Halloween aesthetic also fits the sound like a glove.
Top Tracks: Scissorhands (The Last Snow); Abigail; .com, Pt. 2
2Sleeping With Sirens
Let's Cheers to This

Summary: I jammed at least one song from this record everyday and I don't remember ever getting tired of it. Nowadays, I still think this record is insanely fun and filled to the brim with catchy pop-punk laced post-hardcore tracks. Vocals are memorable and well-executed (most of the time), with decent lyrics throughout. Drumming is the star of the show instrumentally, relentless energy and tight fills are sprinkled all over the record. Guitars are solid and bass does what it has to (and often ends up being extremely underwhelming).
Top Tracks: Postcards and Polaroids; Four Corners and Two Sides; Tally It Up, Settle the Score; If You Can't Hang
1Marilyn Manson
Antichrist Superstar

Summary: The only record on this list that I haven’t changed my opinion on over the years, and within good reason. The record that put Manson on the map, Antichrist Superstar is angry, chaotic and at its core, extremely honest. Manson’s performance on this record is one of his career bests, viciously screaming and wailing all over the record’s moody instrumentation. While the drums and bass can be lackluster in places, they do work to create an ominious atmosphere that gives the album it’s unique, off-putting feeling. The guitar riffs on this record have a sense of sludgy darkness to them, with Tourniquet and Antichrist Superstar being some of the best in Manson’s catalog. Simply put, Antichrist Superstar is an absolute behemoth of a record to this day.
Top Tracks: Tourniquet; Dried Up, Tied, and Dead to the World; Tourniquet; The Reflecting God
