Five Doom bands everybody should know
Candlemass may be my favorite Epic Doom band but I discovered so many new bands which is amazing. It is said Black Sabbath were not only the inventors of Heavy Metal and Metal overall but also of Doom. Fascinated by its slow tempo and multiple sub(sub)genres like Stoner Doom, Epic Doom etc. I decided to look at my playlists to share some underrated and/or simply unknown ensembles from around the world. |
| 1 | Karyn Crisis' Gospel of witches
Honestly I was never big into Doom until I watched one of the goofiest music videos by Candlemass. The famous music video of Bewitched. After this I needed more. I got addicted. Like a drug addict I needed my stuff while walking slowly into my own 'doom'.
'Needles' to say I found this occult band from the sunshine state California.
Karyn Crisis' new band is similiar to Giant Squid which is also from San Franciso. Her spectacular vocals aren't the main reason you should check them out even though she's talented. The atmosphere every note makes, creates a smile on every Doom fan. |
| 2 | Womb
'How foolish thy voice whispers in agony, dear son. Why didn't you listen to ye father?' Nevermind the first two sentences because I've got something very special for you. What? Womb, from the wonderful Spain. Many Germans disgrace our honor in being wasted on Mallorca. Sorry, dear people from Spain.
Womb is an underdog compared with many other popular acts in this genre. 'Deception Through Your Lies' is their debut album which was released in 2015 and it includes one of the most haunting vocals I've ever heared in my young age. They are perfect peformed by the 33 - year old Emilio who also sings in the Barcelonian based band Shattered Sigh. |
| 3 | Fu Xi
There aren't similiar artists like 伏羲 aka Fu Xi which is pronounced Fu shi. This odd name doesn't only belong to one of China's biggest cultural heroes in their mythology but also to one of the three sovereigns of ancient China. The Erhu is played by Chai Xudong which adds an original and fresh atmosphere to the composotions. In 2009 they've released the 35:17 minute long album 在寂静的路上. It's not your daily Doom Metal so you might need some time to get into it. |
| 4 | Witchcraft
Magnus Pelander is the person behind Witchcraft and with him they managed to produce five full lenght albums and one Ep. A wonderful voice, psychedelic elements and lyrics about love combined is very rare. Especially in Örebro where the members come from. Witchcraft are like the modern version of Pentagram that already earned a high status in our music scene. |
| 5 | Mount Salem
Chicago isn't only the hometown from Jim
(According to Jim) but also the city where Mount Salem comes from. Their Ep is a gem you really should listen to when you find it on youtube, spotify etc. I really enjoyed the song 'Good times', just like my ears. It's not as heavy as doom but the vibe which comes through my headphones is simply incredible and amazing. |
