1Anna von Hausswolff
Live at Montreux Jazz Festival

This live recording might actually breathe new life into an already impressive discog - 4.1
2Trenches
Reckoner

This isn't reinventing the wheel but there's something about this style of post-metal/core that really does it for me - 3.7
3Shapeshifter (JPN)
Dark Ritual

grind / death / hxc - 3.5
4Aurora (NOR)
The Gods We Can Touch

art-pop - 3.5

atmosphere and intrigue in spades, cheers Myth
5Pensees Nocturnes
Douce Fange

black metal / avant-garde / dark cabaret / 'musette' (traditional french music) - 3.5

This is an absolute blast and precisely as bizarre as the descriptors above suggest, no really. Incredibly this doesn't sound forced in the slightest, seamless amalgamation of things that just shouldn't work together in harmony like this.
640 Watt Sun
Perfect Light

slowcore / folk - 4.1

If you're patient this is so rewarding. Touching album with significant emotional depth. Maybe it's a 'mood' album for some, maybe I'm just a miserable S.O.B etc. but I found myself revisiting this regularly. The guy's voice is something else and the unobtrusive melancholy is simultaneously dissociative and bizarrely engaging.
7Aequorea
Dim

atmospheric sludge / doom - 3.7

Beautifully executed slice of everything slow, dark and heavy and also some not so dark and heavy things. Thanks garas.
8Silvana Estrada
Marchita

latin folk / chamber music - 3.5
9YAYA KIM
a.k.a YAYA

jazz rock / trip-hop / blues / art-pop / everything and the kitchen sink - 4.1

This is over 2 hrs long/3 x LPs but is definitely worth the price of admission. An absolute blast, full of creativity, depth and very diverse. Gonna be spending significant time with this, as I get the feeling that I haven't even touched the surface of what this has to offer.
10Rolo Tomassi
Where Myth Becomes Memory

mathcore / post-metal - 4.1

Rolo return with a release that combines the ferocity of their older work with a more considered and atmospheric approach to song-writing, often fusing the two effortlessly in intriguing ways. Whereas TWD's strength lies in the softer moments, 'Myth' excels in it's moments of heaviness, using seamless incorporated synths and a mammoth guitar tone to hammer home considerable climaxes.
11Earthless
Night Parade of One Hundred Demons

heavy psych / stoner - 3.5

Does precisely one thing for the entire record, just so happens that thing is actually very good
12Venom Prison
Erebos

melodic deathcore - 3.5

Very well-produced tech/melo-death leaning dxc that gets the balance right between impressive musicianship and engaging song-writing.
13Cult of Luna
The Long Road North

post metal / atmo-sludge / Cult of Luna - 4.1
14Voivod
Synchro Anarchy

progressive thrash - 3.7

One of the more interesting thrash bands to have emerged from the classic era, Voivod are still going strong nearly 40 years on - wow, yes it's that long apparently. As a fan of their highly acclaimed trilogy (and having heard nothing else) this was a welcome (re-)discovery. Despite vocals that I personally find instinctively hard to digest, the instrumentals are at times, quite brilliant. Their take on proggy sci-fi tinged thrash (or is it thrashy tinged space prog?) is very much their own and wholly entertaining. Some of it is even surprisingly catchy.
15Aeviterne
The Ailing Facade

disso-death / industrial - 3.9

from the ashes of stellar 'one and done' act Flourishing, Aeviterne have picked up where that band left off by producing another strikingly creative album within the now well-trodden (and arguably overdone) disso-death formula, where industrial / noise flavours and thunderous percussion help propel this into relevancy amongst a sea of clones.
16Falls of Rauros
Key to a Vanishing Future

progressive / atmo-black - 4.1

another stellar release from FoR following on from Patterns In Mythology. Varied, interesting, progressive release that takes a while to marinate.
17Morrow (UK)
The Quiet Earth

crust / atmo sludge - 3.9

from the ashes of Fall of Efrafa (apparently), so guess I should've expected this excellence
18The Gathering
Beautiful Distortion

art / prog rock - 3.7
19CMAT
If My Wife New I'd Be Dead

indie pop / country - 4.1

Surprise package of the year so far, a really touching yet often amusing collection of pop country with killer hooks and no shortage of wit or emotional depth.
