| PERFECT SONGS 2.. ROUND V..
and then there were three.. | 1 | | Charles Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus
The theme for this round (the one before the showdown!) is JAZZ.. I want you to rec me TWO songs from any of the genre's castes and classes, along with its countless bastard children.. anything is open, from bop to avant-garde to fusion to jazz punk, cumbia jazz, polka, metal etc. etc. etc. Just make it good, and perhaps take a quick look -ee through my ratings to see which side of things my tastes fall on.. Good luck! | 2 | | Cab Calloway Minnie the Moocher / Doin' the rumba
Minnie the Moocher - I'll give my soul for a good piece of kitsch, and this sort of sleazy swing big band stuff is honestly some of the best things around.. 5/5 easy | 3 | | Frank Zappa The Grand Wazoo
Eat that Question - my relationship with Zappa is always troubled.. I think the man is incredibly important for breaking boundaries, but the actual music is a fucking crapshoot to me, and for my money, about 20% of what he throws up actually sticks.. This was a very decent fusion freakout.. 3.3/5
Ars total score = 8.3/10 | 4 | | Storm and Stress Under Thunder and Fluorescent Light
Lightmen Plus One - Cold Blair - a supremely moody piece with great wind-work.. while the moog keys are always a detraction from music like this, making things too twinkly and simpering, especially when the song tries to set a hanging mood, they don't fuck things up too much here, the piece is too strong.. 4.6/5
Storm and Stress - The Sky's the Ground, the Ground is the Stepladder, the Stepladder is the Toilet etc. - decent post-rock, with mathy and emo tinges to it.. jazzy, yes.. but I have an extremely hard time connecting to music that meanders and shrugs its shoulders so much without just dropping something devastatingly open into the mix.. 3/5
plane total score = 7.6/10 ELIMINATED (sorry, my love.. it was a fight well fought, and you gave me a ton of great shit along the way) | 5 | | Henry Cow Unrest
Half Asleep, Half Awake - A little maudlin at times, but the nervy pace and constant shifts keep things plenty interesting here.. as always with Henry Cow, the musicianship is tightly coiled, but still seems loose enough to not sacrifice passion.. 4/5 | 6 | | Albert Ayler Spiritual Unity
Ghosts - now this is the shit.. unhinged and fucking lovely for it.. free form jazz can often spiral into the crapper.. this holds it for me and more.. much more.. 4.7/5
Fripp total score = 9.7/10 | |
