I always forget that Dial M was Hitckcock, but it makes sense. Pure acting, all one room. So good. I think Rear Window / NBNW / Vertigo stand above the rest, but I certainly don't knock anyone who wants to put some of his others up there as well.
I've never been a Birds fan, but I'd actually be interested to see what a smart suspense director could do with it. |

03.13.17 | NBNW is cool, but it's a bit cheesy, it doesn't have of that dark tone like some of his other movies tbh, still great tho. |

03.13.17 | Window would not work the way it was scripted then, Tech kills everything, the suspense of trying to get her attention that he was coming wouldnt work, they would just text, Disturbia is a bad comparison, it is a window type moviw, but nowhere near, a couple of years ago I saw Window on the big screen, it was fantastic |

03.14.17 | I really don't care for most of the Friday the 13th movies. 1-3 are super boring and feel pretty standard even for the time, especially 2 and 3, which really don't add anything to the formula, which isn't any good to begin with.
4 is legitimately pretty good. The characters are better / less assholeish, lots of fun scenes, mostly good kills, plus Corey Feldman and Crispin Glover being creepy and hilarious, respectively.
5 sucks. Not because it doesn't have Jason in it, I don't really give a shit, but because it's long and tedious. Nothing interesting really happens in the movie, and they really just repeat the ending to 4.
6 is one of the best. Doesn't take itself seriously at all. Pretty much a farce, actually. Also decent enough conclusion to the Tommy Jarvis 'storyline'.
7 and 8 are the worst ones, particularly 8. 7 is just mediocre, with no interesting elements besides having the Carrie White knockoff in it, and 8 is the definition of campy yet bland.
I really like 9. I know everybody hates it, but I don't really get why. Yeah, it's not a F13 movie, but most of them suck anyway, so I dunno how that's a bad thing. The body snatcher element is interesting enough, and all of the ridiculous lore they make up for this one (including the weird Evil Dead crossover stuff) is really fun.
X is also great because it takes the trite ...in SPACE! joke and goes full ham with it. Lots of fun and another one that's basically a comedy. Also reminded me a lot of Power Rangers in Space, which is funny.
Freddy v Jason is pretty lame. The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise as a whole is infinitely better than F13, but this feels more like a F13 movie than a NoES one: boring characters, very little inventiveness (even in the dream sequences), and honestly kind of a dull showdown between the two.
And the remake is kind of whatever. I like the Death Proof-esque "twist" 20 minutes in. Other than that, it's pretty forgettable other than Jared Padalecki's hunk factor helps. |
Crymsonblaze
03.14.17 | shit did i really just write that much about shitty F13. oh dear. |

03.14.17 | ok, 2 didnt add anything? first it was the intro to Jason Vorhees, one of 2-3 known horror characters, and it is a great slasher movie, one of the top three classic slasher movies, its cinematography is up there with Halloween, which everybody copied moving forward, 3 I agree is pretty weak as far as horror goes, but if you saw it in the theatre, (im dating myself) it was 3D and had some good gags with it |
theacademy
03.14.17 | crymson you're usually on point about this stuff but you're f13 analysis is kinda off
at least you nailed that X is dope and that nightmare owns f13 overall tho |
theacademy

wham49
03.14.17 | nightmare does not own F13 at all, Dream Warrior is dope though
and the comment that F13 I was ordinary when it came out is not true at all, along with Halloween the year before the 2 of them pretty much made the genre, with dozens of slasher movie copycats coming in the next few years |
wham49
03.14.17 | is 9 goes to hell?, if so I agree it is better than most people give it credit for |
theacademy
03.14.17 | dream warriors alone owns every f13 movie added together |
wham49
03.14.17 | maybe 3,5,7-remake, but I still would say 1,2,4,6, are at least as good as Warriors, |
Crymsonblaze
03.14.17 | "first it was the intro to Jason Vorhees, one of 2-3 known horror characters, and it is a great slasher movie"
That's fair I guess. I've never really cared about Jason because there essentially is no character to him unlike a lot of slasher villains. Michael Myers has even less personality, but I think he's so stoic and creepy that he gets by on that alone. Jason is just an inbred hillbilly until he became a zombie, neither of which are very interesting.
"crymson you're usually on point about this stuff but you're f13 analysis is kinda off"
Fair enough Acad.
"and the comment that F13 I was ordinary when it came out is not true at all"
I should have worded that better, I guess. I just meant that compared to Halloween, it was already derivative. There's a lot of legitimate tension and craft in Halloween. I don't think it's the masterpiece that people say it is (and not even close to Carpenter's best movie) but it has way more going for it than the original F13, which is just trashy cinema. That's fine and all, but I don't think it's special in any regard, and it's before the movies started having more fun with their characters and kills, so the first few just stick out as pretty bland for me.
"dream warriors alone owns every f13 movie added together"
Very true. I think most of the Nightmares own every F13 movie added together. Except maybe Freddy's Dead. And the remake I guess. |
Crymsonblaze
03.14.17 | "idle hands"
Don't The Offspring play a show and get killed in that one? I remember it being pretty funny. |
wham49
03.14.17 | crymson, anything compared to the original Halloween looks weak, but the 2 together built a genre. which allowed classics like My bloody Valentine, Prom Night, terror Train, The Town That Dreaded Sundown, Nightmare on Elm Street, Silent Night Deadly Night, The Prowler, Sleepaway Camp and all other sequals and stuff, to exist |
Spluger
03.14.17 | Sleepaway Camp is such a bizzarre fucked up movie. "Around here we call em baldies. Makes your mouth water just thinking about em..." |
DikkoZinner
03.14.17 | "Donnie Darko directors cut"
made it worse imo, preferred theatrical. |
budgie
03.14.17 | imo the first scream contends with halloween '78 for best slasher. but i just goddamn love scream.. for some reason i thought i didn't like it all these years.. saw it again a month ago.. it's a masterpiece |
dbizzles
03.14.17 | I sit with the very unpopular opinion that Donnie Darko is a stupid movie. |
wham49
03.14.17 | Budgie it is, but not Halloween |
budgie
03.14.17 | yeah halloween is the definite king, i think i just have this nostalgic thing with scream
halloween has the best ending of any horror, i figure. you should check out the blackcoat's daughter if you haven't already, it's doing a limited theatrical release end of this month, and there are some 1080p downloads online
it's like a slowburn satanic slasher with gorgeous atmosphere |
wham49
03.14.17 | cool will check if I see
where are you on the Chainsaw Massacres? |
budgie
03.14.17 | i think the first 1 is awesome, heard the 2003 one is alright, and heard awful things about the 2013 and 2006 ones, haven't seen any but the first |
wham49
03.14.17 | the first 2 are good, 2 isnt as good as the second, second has some humor on it, the remake in 2003 is pretty good as id the next, beginnings, but generally I dont watch them, check the matthew Maconahy and Reneee zelweger one, so bad it is good |
EphemeralEternity
03.14.17 | 2006 TCM is the GOAT. Fr it's actually a decent horror film and R.Lee Ermey plays a great psychopath, really gritty feel to it and a great soundtrack but there are a few glaring unrealistic scenes and continuity errors that really ruin it |
Rigma
03.14.17 | Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Spluger
03.14.17 | Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 feels almost like a response to the first one. A lot of the first movie was about building tension and suspense, and the second is a straight up campy gorefest. Also R.Lee Ermey blew my mind when I realized who he was in TCM 06. |
EphemeralEternity
03.14.17 | he always steals the show , he was an actual drill sergeant in the corps too so he was born to play those sort of roles |
budgie
03.14.17 | jason in part 6 was cool for that reason, they didn't use an actor or stuntman, they just hired an ex-marine? |
wham49
03.15.17 | Halloween's
1 one of the best movies of all time, cinematagraphy, story line, suspense, music,it has it all, pretty much started the slasher genre, one of the only movies that has ever scared me, due to the tremendous work of nck Castle, the scene with him coming down the stairs, and walking across the street after Jamie Leigh, or standing tilting his head like a dog at his handywork still gets me
2, descent, def. not as good as the first, different Michael, Nick Castle was perfect and nobody ever lived up to his great work, so that was lacking,
3 WTF
4-5 complete let down, if they added some campiness, and some humor they would of played better
Curse of Micheal Myers. 2nd best, good story line although the beginning was kinda lame, but michael was descent, Paul RUdd as a grown Tommy wasnt bad, I like the satanic angle, it was def. the best since part 2
H2O, very good, one of the first dates with my wife, so it is pretty special that way, plus it was short to the point, Jamie Leigh was cool, it had a little sense of humor added by LL cool J, and , Michael was really good, not as good as castle but probably second in line.
Resurrection, I saw at a drive in, was pretty bad, but at least entertaining, the premise coupld of been better but it didnt play very well
the remakes, I personally thoght they were sescent especially the first, but my wife, who is just as schooled in horror as I thought they were terrrible, and I respect her opinion about such things, she thought they were trying to hard, and changed the backstory too much, I liked the extra backstrory
by the way, look for the extended version of the original, it has all the extra scenes that they shot later for tv, has some really good atmosphere in it and adds some lacking backstory to the theatrical version. |

03.15.17 | ok u dumbass idiot halloween 4 is also better than the entire f13 series added together... your analysis suggests h2 is better than h4 which basically nullifies everything else you say jesis

03.15.17 | yup, first one with jamie (the return)... also ellie cornell
also the fact that you didn't know who jamie was invalidates everything again dude c'mon bro |
theacademy
03.15.17 | dramatics aside: 4 is the obvious second best in the franchise (and if you think that's 2, i'd watch both again asap-- and NOT the edited for tv versions) |
Crymsonblaze
03.15.17 | I also really like 4. Hate 5 and 6 though (except shoutouts to young sexy Paul Rudd)
I do like H20 too but it feels like it's trying to chase Scream too much, a lot like I Know What You Did Last Summer. Still fun enough though. |
wham49
03.16.17 | when you talk Halloween, what Jamie do you think of, if he would of been a little specific, I would of got the little creepy girl, also I never said 2 was second best, I said either Curse of Micheal Myers (they never use 6 in the title ) which invalidates you, you dumbfuck or H2O was the second best. The main reason 4 can not be second best is because the Micheal is so terrible it is a joke, besides that it is a good movie.
and has anybody tried to watch 2 tv version, it is completly a different sequence of events and completely changes the movie, it is interesting if you haven't ( and no Asshole, I am not saying it is great) |
NewBallistics
03.16.17 | 2 and 10 are the shit.
Brazil and Children of Men are usually the two I bring up when asked about my favorites ... don't think it's possible for me to name the winner between them. |
