Marquee Moon

UniqueUniverse's rec
CURRENT COMPETITION SCORE: 77.5

Con: Although I feel like I’ve said this before, this statement rings truer than ever: I can definitely see why this is considered a classic. Is it just me or am I getting some hardcore psych vibes on this as well (Connor stop taking psychedelics man…)? Seriously though the 10 minute title track is amazing with its blissful guitar riff that stays just enough to keep it potent. The first couple of songs are amazing slices of proto-post-punk as well, and the vocals are like the cherry on top. They are full of character and just passionate enough to get any punk fan’s ears to perk up. Despite it dragging a bit near the end, overall this honestly might be favorite rec yet and the first 4.5 I’ll award. 4.3/5

Marquee Moon

Neeka: Despite a very rocky start (“See No Evil” just didn’t click with me somehow), Marquee Moon proved to be a very surprising album indeed. Despite initially seeming firmly planted in straightforward in post-punk monochrome, it quickly started to show unexpected colors such as the lengthy instrumentation of the title track and the melodic piano of “Torn Curtain,” all which appealed to me greatly. This album, as with many others I’ve enjoyed, is at its best when it takes its post-punk roots and takes them in unanticipated directions. Aside from some occasional repetition early on and the occasional track that goes on for a bit too long (only the first three are under five minutes), there aren’t many complaints to be made here. I look forward to coming back to this one in the future. 3.9/5

Marquee Moon

Deadly: Right from the get go Marquee Moon begins with a vocal performance full of energy and charisma, twinkly guitar riffs flowing into a rock solo, and a groovy bassline which does well to set the tone for what’s to come. This record blends post punk with psychedelic rock in a marvelous and refreshing way that it’s no wonder this could be considered a classic. This blend is brought to its utmost perfection on title track “Marquee Moon” with its bumping bass work and bright guitar riffs which lead into an epic solo and finishing with a breathtaking twinkly and soaring close. Just when you think the album could reach any more spectacular heights we are brought “Torn Curtain” which ends on the album on a rather marvelous note paired with its mellow yet rich solo layered over delicate piano playing. A truly inspiring listening to any who wish to get themselves into the post punk genre. 4.5/5

Tyler.'s rec
CURRENT COMPETITION SCORE: 75.8

Con: First song got me so hype with its dreamy instrumentals and floating vocals as I thought this was going to be another LC-type rec from my boy Tyler. And although these elements remained in varying dosages, when the dose was too low it became trite British arena rock. 80s British arena rock at that, definitely not my favorite genre. The vocals even begin to grate on you as they slow the album down to a subtle snore. It does, however, end fairly strong with View From a Hill and the rest of the 3 or 4 highlights are pretty amazing dream pop/post-punk slices. I just wish it could’ve played into its strengths better. 3.4/5
6The Chameleons
Script of the Bridge

Neeka: Script of the Bridge is like everything I like about post-punk in one neat package. Each song is wrapped in a lush, hazy atmosphere, but also is full of complex musicianship and powerful melodies to back it up. It’s at once a very appealing but constantly tense album. The gorgeous closer “View from a Hill” best represents this perhaps, the song’s lengthy outro is full of musical warmth but with a sense of darkness looming throughout. On the downside, there’s a run of songs that are a bit too similar, and the already lengthy album would likely benefit greatly if they were cut entirely. Otherwise the album is easily one of the best I’ve listened to so far, benefiting especially from the breathtaking opener and “Monkeyland.” Con and Deadly are trippin’, good shit Tyler. 4.2/5

8The Chameleons
Script of the Bridge

Deadly: When having finished an album as vocally and instrumentally interesting as Marquee Moon, it’s hard to approach an album such as Script of the Bridge with its droning vocals and overall samey song structures. In fact if you pay attention to the primary guitar riffs in “Don’t Fall”, “Here Today” and “Pleasure and Pain” they could easily be swapped as they are practically the same structure just with other riffs layered on top of them to differentiate the tracks. This laziness in structure tends to leave a rather bitter taste despite what interesting moments each track brings to the table. Aside from this however, there are some rather enjoyable bass lines scattered throughout the album and there were some interesting textural layerings that occur. The most notable moments being the overlapped vocals on the “Don’t Fall”, the tambourine in both “Second Skin” and “View from a Hill”, as well as the synth overlapping the track on “As High As You Can Go”.

Being that I typically don’t care for the droning soundscapes that are present in “dreamy” albums, I wasn’t overly impressed with this album. 3.3/5

Terrarium

teamster's rec
CURRENT COMPETITION SCORE: 70.3
Con: Although I hear the post-punk pretty clearly, this is very alt rock as the cavernous drums are gone, replaced by a drummer residing more in the atmosphere and clouds. Her voice is very pretty, especially when she sings in French, but it’s her self-produced instrumentals that truly take the spotlight. Sitting in between a gazey Silversun Pickups and a gothic punk Traitrs, the instrumentals are slightly post punk and all the way darkly brooding atmospheric alt rock. This is clearly her strong suit, and it’s deliciously haunting on more than half of the tracks. Unfortunately, there are two glaring issues. Firstly the opener ‘Allegory’ has some terrible production, especially when contrasted with the rest of the album (just listen to that bass and the clipping…). Secondly, she gets a bit too straightforward punk in the middle of the album, as seen with ‘Misery’ thru ‘Frozen Time’,

and while they are solid tracks they pale in comparison to the rest of the gems on this album. This is really a near-perfect rec, and it’s frustrating because if I took 8/11 of these songs it’d be a near 4.5. 4.1/5
12Juliette Jade
Terrarium

Neeka: This time teamster served up another surprisingly great female-led album, and this time by female led I mean that according to the album notes she literally did everything on this record. It’s got fantastic vocals, memorable riffs, and a massive sound. She goes deftly from the punky opener to the country-tinged “Room 7” and then straight into the epic “Diademe.” Needless to say I was blown away by her skill as a solo musician and even more ridiculous is that she labeled these as “Home Demos” on her album cover. There were a couple of rough moments and a few songs seemed to repeat themselves (i.e. “Frozen Time” and “Misery”), but overall the daring willingness to try everything and the two excellent closers just won me over completely. I can’t wait to see what Ms. Jade does next. 4.1/5

13Juliette Jade
Terrarium

Deadly: When listening to Terrarium it’s hard to believe this album was composed, performed, and produced by Juliette Jade. The amount of variety and overall musical ability of Juliette is something to be marveled, not to mention the overall production ability shown here. The fact that she labels this album with “Home Demos” is quite surprising as generally speaking, this album feels quite complete and realized in itself. Aside from some minor flaws in production there’s so much variety on this release it’s hard not to be blown away by Juliette’s brilliance in musicianship and songwriting. From “Room 7’s” moody yet country esque vibe, to “Diademe’s” church organ background leading into a soaring guitar solo, to the shredding guitar lick that opens “Frozen Time”, to the moody and dreary atmosphere of “Ashes of Light”. The album even closes on a high note with its slow albeit powerful closing guitar solo on “Dusk”. 4.3/5
