04.17.20 | Haven't listened yet, but I'm gathering from the descriptions we have two very different interpretations of folk here.
Once again, the voting for this ends next Thursday. |
Jethro42
04.17.20 | oh my oh my |
garas
04.17.20 | I jumped on Ksiezyc right away. I love it, this is really obscure - but I definitely need a few listens before deciding on my final rating. Gosh, this could make a great soundtrack for a folk horror movie..! |
Divaman
04.17.20 | Mmm, you're whetting my appetite, garas. |
Friday13th
04.17.20 | 1 looks very interesting. I think I am usually pretty good at ignoring unpleasant vocals and focusing on the substance of the music, so I'm also excited to hear how 2 pans out. |
Jethro42
04.17.20 | At first, I prefered the second one instantly, the first one being too experimental (I can see its charm now). ''The Runaround''from Jared Hart is sublime. I'm really not a fan of the vocals, good luck Friday!...
And I still don't know what to think about both albums as a whole. |
Jethro42
04.18.20 | Jared Hart reminds me of John Mellencamp or garage rock in places. It contains good moments. |
aydross121
04.18.20 | commenting for later |
Divaman
04.18.20 | Yep. As I expected, this is a really apples vs. orangutans matchup. Some pretty good traditional pop folk vs. weird world music folk. Gonna have to think hard about this one. Two more excellent choices. |
Jethro42
04.18.20 | It's quiet...
1 doesn't really appeal to me. 2 rocks hard. My vote goes to 2. |
Divaman
04.18.20 | The vote is 0-1. |
NorthernSkylark
04.18.20 | did not enjoy 2, will check 1 later |
Minushuman24
04.18.20 | Oh jesus these are even more different than the last couple.
I should have put a better description for Jared Hart. Just, like, Sing along heart on the sleeve folk music akin to Chuck Ragan and the sort.
Just orgcore shit
And I love it |
Jethro42
04.18.20 | 1 passes so close to be acceptable, but it's only a bunch of artists who go to far in experimentation, they miss the essential, and go for a forgettable, sonic collage that is losing its way. Sometimes the piano is interesting, but it's accompanied by random noises that annoy me. At best, voices make me think of Dead Can Dance in rare places. |
Jethro42
04.19.20 | For 2, it's not that the vocals are irritating (except for ''Totem''); the instrumentation is minimalist, and it doesn't suit the singer style. It's like if the singer wasn't in the good band sometimes. I would imagine him singing for Kyuss or Ragan like Minus said. There are enough good moments to make a difference. Not perfect, but good with great songs. |
bgillesp
04.19.20 | 2 was super interesting for me. The vocals are jarring but I kinda like that. |
Friday13th
04.19.20 | @Minushuman24 your second description is far less helpful than your first lol |
Friday13th
04.19.20 | @Jethro42 yeah the vocalist in 2 could be in a heavy metal band. Reminds me of James Hetfield and Chad Kroeger. |
Friday13th
04.19.20 | I was trying to have an open mind with 2, but the music itself is too dull and samey to be exciting. Most songs are very predictable and use tired major key chords and melodies. I know it's bad when one of the standout tracks is the short "Interlude."
The last song was probably the best and most energetic track, but I still don't hear anything "orgcore" about this. It's more just folk mixed with acoustic radio rock. |
Jethro42
04.19.20 | ''I know it's bad when one of the standout tracks is the short "Interlude''
Friday is gonna choose 1.
I agree with you Friday, songs are so samey I give them all 3.5/5, except for ''The Runaround''and ''Basements''which I give a 4/5,''Totem'' is a 2/5 and ''Interlude'' a 3/5. ''Interlude'' breaks too much the flow.

Friday13th
04.19.20 | Yes, my vote definitely goes to Ksiezyc.
It's a very strange and interesting album with a great exhibit of dark tones with light and varied instrumentation. Yes, it occasionally sounds like Dead Can Dance. It is sometimes too minimalistic, but it keeps me interested to hear what comes next. It would indeed make a wonderful soundtrack to a suspenseful movie. |
DoofDoof
04.19.20 | Sint is so cultured oh wow - has some atmosphere going for it, 3-3.5 on first impression |
Friday13th
04.19.20 | On a side note, Ksiezyc is the ultimate match up against my pick. I would love to see how that goes down! |
Divaman
04.19.20 | As best I can tell, the official vote count is 1-1:
Ksiezyc - Friday
Jared Hart - Jethro |
Jethro42
04.19.20 | Rectification; I give ''The Guillotine'', ''Heads or Tails'' and ''Ditch Digger'' a 3/5. |
Jethro42
04.19.20 | Ksiezyc is not for every ear, but I can see the hype. Too much random stuff for me. Not enough structured. I have to say, it's hard for me to appreciate when it's such a dark and cold atmosphere. Enough listenings from now on. I stop trying to appreciate it. The Dead Can Dancy stuff is adding some serious points, but the rest don't appeal for me. |
neekafat
04.20.20 | Did... did Jared Hart just quote The Goo-Goo Dolls? |
aydross121
04.20.20 | 2 sounds like andrew wk lol |
DoofDoof
04.20.20 | 2 is sounding more and more intriguing from these descriptions :D |
DoofDoof
04.20.20 | 2 is awful lmao, a 0.5? |
DoofDoof
04.20.20 | also: this isn't really folk, more acoustic rock, so for me it dunt qualify |
DoofDoof
04.20.20 | Ok my vote goes for Ksiezyc no contest, sorry Minushman
Ksiezyc - 3.5/5, best so far, even if not really my thing 100%
Jared - 0.5/5, sorry if this was my friend's music I'd tell him to hang it up |
Divaman
04.20.20 | I found this to be a tough choice.
Ksiezyc is experimental, and as such, it's inconsistent. Parts of it are beautiful and parts of it are dissonant and fairly unpleasant. (This is another one of those albums where my wife walked through during one f the dissonant parts where the women were just screaming, and asked me rather scornfully what the hellI was listening to).
The Jared Hart album is consistent, and decent throughout, but kind of generic and a little samey. For me, it doesn't reach the heights of the Ksiezyc LP, but doesn't hit the lows either.
My vote is for the Ksiezyc album.
The vote is 3-1 in favor of Ksiezyc. |
SlothcoreSam
04.20.20 | I'm voting for 2. |
Minushuman24
04.21.20 | It's almost like it is folk rock
Aw man, Ksiezyc is not on spotify, I will try to get to it tomorrow |
Divaman
04.21.20 | 3-2
Ksiezyc - Friday, Doof, Diva
Jared Hart - Jethro, Slothcore |
Jethro42
04.21.20 | Doof, awful for Jared Hart, really? Just listen to ''The Runaround'' and ''Basements''...You probably don't dig the vocals, but try to get over it, for a moment. |
neekafat
04.21.20 | Jared Hart was just not good guys |
DoofDoof
04.21.20 | 'It's almost like it is folk rock'
For me 'acoustic rock' is rock song writing unplugged pretty much
Folk rock is folk song writing given a bit more full band juice/intensity and/or 'plugged in'
With the Jared I definitely get the vibe of the first category |
nuklearmoose
04.21.20 | I'll admit, some of these comments made me not hopeful for Jared Hart, but I'm really digging it so far. Gonna have to see how it feels after a couple more listens |
Sinternet
04.21.20 | won't vote obviously but will try to check minus' rec today |
DoofDoof
04.21.20 | can't wait for your reaction to it |

04.21.20 | Sinternet, you and Minus are both allowed to vote. |

04.22.20 | Alright, finally got around to Ksiezyc.
Past Lives is an album that I've had on my shelf for years now, and it never really clicked until about a year ago. It was a slow burning album for me, but it became an essential for roadtripping. There's some songs on here that I still don't care for, namely Totem, but then there's songs like Basements and The Leo that have such strong melodies, that it is easy to look past the Hart's rough vocals and feel the passion burn through. This isn't a ground breaking album in the least, but it really doesn't have to be, it is just a whole lot of fun. 3.6
Favorite Tracks: The Leo and Deacon Ain't Dead Yet
- Given the description, I don't think I was really ready for what this album had to offer. I can definitely see the medieval influence, especially in the vocal performance, but gone is the archaic jaunty rhythm, and in comes the surreal, ethereal soundscapes. It takes the ideas from traditional folk and warps it into a somewhat menacing experience. I liked this, I don't know how much I liked this, but I liked it. I would listen to this more if it were more readily available, but I appreciate what they were doing with this and will probably come back to this if I am in the mood for something uniquely haunting. 3.3
Favorite Tracks: Mijana and Smieszki.
Surprise, surprise, I'm gonna vote for my recommendation. Feels a bit cheap, but here we are. I liked Ksiezyc and I think it will grow on me. There's some remarkable apocalyptic songs on there that I adore. |
Divaman
04.22.20 | 3-3
Ksiezyc - Friday, Doof, Diva
Jared Hart - Jethro, Slothcore, Minus |
Divaman
04.22.20 | Minus, no need to feel cheap. Sinternet has the opportunity to vote for his rec and dance it out if he so chooses. I promise that when my round comes around, assuming I like my rec better than the one it's up against, I'll vote for it with no guilt whatsoever. (And the odds are good, because I like my taste. :) ) |
aydross121
04.23.20 | Vote to 1 |
Deathconscious
04.23.20 | have to vote for 1. 2 sounds like it really needs electric guitars and drums, the acoustic instruments dont fit the songwriting/delivery. |
budgie
04.23.20 | 1 is pretty fuckin weird so far |
Divaman
04.23.20 | 5-3
Ksiezyc - Friday, Doof, Diva, aydross, deathconscious
Jared Hart - Jethro, Slothcore, Minus |

04.23.20 | The rest of you, please get your votes in. Voting ends the end of the day tomorrow. |
aydross121
04.23.20 | Just a consideration Divaman, but maybe add some info on each bracket with the voting instructions, timeframes, etc.
Stuff that was on the original tourney creation list, so that new people know they can listen and vote. |
Divaman
04.23.20 | Good idea, aydross. |

04.23.20 | Uuuuuh, damn I kinda forgot about this! I'm so sorry Diva, I'll finish up these ASAP today! |
neekafat
04.23.20 | I haven't listened to them twice yet (I will for sure tomorrow, but just in case) I'm strongly voting for 1 after the first listen |
garas
04.23.20 | I vote for Ksiezyc. A folk punk album like "Past Lives & Pass Lines" had no chance against it for me. |
Friday13th
04.23.20 | Can anyone explain how the Jared Hart album is punk? Anyone? Bueller? |
Divaman
04.23.20 | 7-3
Ksiezyc - Friday, Doof, Diva, aydross, deathconscious, neeka, garas
Jared Hart - Jethro, Slothcore, Minus |
Minushuman24
04.23.20 | I assume cause it is in the same vein as a lot of americana punk bands.
I dunno, I'd hesitate to call it folk punk personally as well, but I can see the similarities. |
Divaman
04.23.20 | I think they're trying to say it's anti-folk, which is sort of the equivalent of folk punk. I don't really agree, though. |
budgie
04.23.20 | did not enjoy either but i enjoyed 2 less so i vote for one |
Divaman
04.23.20 | 8-3
Ksiezyc - Friday, Doof, Diva, aydross, deathconscious, neeka, garas, budgie
Jared Hart - Jethro, Slothcore, Minus |
dmathias52
04.23.20 | Oof. 2 was like going to an open mic night at my undergrad and 1 was like going to the blackbox theatre performance of the composition majors (although obviously more advanced than the composition majors). Did two listens of each, but it was hard to convince myself to return for that second list.
Can't say I necessarily enjoyed either much. 2 is more my style but was just pretty bland and, yeah, the vocals were rough. I don't think I'll ever return to Ksiezyc again, but it was at least intriguing, so it was that going for it.
My vote goes to Ksiezyc |
Jethro42
04.23.20 | Give it a call, Diva ;) |

wham49
04.24.20 | sorry was thinking tomorrow, I'll go with 1 although neither were that fantastic |

04.24.20 | Jared Hart should seriously use the female vocalist more--she's featured on the two best songs on here by far |
