2018 Movies I'm Most Psyched For

"Psyched" might not really be accurate, except for the top few. "Interested In" is probably better. As I said last year, I'm an emotional 12-year-old, and a former comic book kid who loves that I've lived long enough to see my old comic books reach the big screen. I let the list run to #13 this year, so it wouldn't all be comic book films.
13Slender
Walled Garden

Slenderman

I have no idea if they're putting any money into this. It might well (will probably) suck. But they're working with an interesting legend here, so it at least has the potential to be a good horror flick.
12Insidious
The Last Human Bleed

Insidious: The Last Key

For a mainstream horror series, the "Insidious" films have been among the best. I really like Lin Shaye in this franchise.

Bottom Line: This was worse than I expected. I still like Lin Shaye, but this sucked. Rating: 1.5/5 stars.
11Death Wish Kids
There's Nothing In School They Can't Teach You...

Death Wish

I wouldn't be as interested in this remake if it weren't starring Bruce Willis. Hope they don't pretty it up too much.
10Mutants of War
The Mutation Begins

The New Mutants

Supposed to be part super-hero flick, part horror film. Could go either way.

Bottom Line: It went, all right -- straight on through to a February of 2019 release. Guess I'll have to put it on next year's list. Maybe. (Update: Now it's been pushed back to August 2019. It's starting to look like this might be a disaster.)
9Jethro Tull
Aqualung

Aquaman

Let's face it, Aquaman was the lamest of heroes in the comics, and DC hero films don't have the best track record. Can Jason Momoa make it interesting? I'm dubious, but we'll see.
8Tomb of Doom
Bone Thieves

Tomb Raider

Has a good cast -- Alicia Vikander was really good in "Ex Machina", and it also has Dominic West and Walton Goggins. I liked the old Angelina Jolie films better than most people, so I'm optimistic.

Bottom Line: Not terrible, but I hoped for better. Vikander is excellent, and Goggins is good. The plot is pretty dumb, though. Rating: 2.5/5 stars
7Man and Wasp
Close The World, Open The Next

Ant-Man and The Wasp

As a sleeper film about a lesser comic book hero, "Ant-Man" surprised. I'm a little iffy about the sequel, though. And I'm not an Evangeline Lilly fan -- she was the worst thing about "The Hobbit" movies.

The Bottom Line: It was entertaining enough.
Rating: 3 of 5 stars
6Venom
From the Very Depths

Venom

I'm less in love with this character than are a lot of comic book fans. Pretty good cast, though, including Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams and Woody Harrelson.
5Black Light Panthers
1982-1997

Black Panther

OK, it's really un-p.c. to say this, but Black Panther was just a so-so comic book character. He was pretty bad-ass in "Captain America: Civil War", though, and Chadwick Boseman nailed the character. And Michael B. Jordan ruled in "Creed", so I'm hopeful on this one.

The Bottom Line: Not as great as many people say, but a solid and entertaining action flick with a good cast.
Rating: 3.5 of 5 stars.
4Big Spider's Back
Warped

The Girl in the Spider's Web

I'm hoping they don't totally screw this up. No more Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, and this one is based on the 4th Millenium novel, which was written after Stieg Larson's death. But Lisbeth Salender is a great character, so hopefully that will carry the day.
3Crippled Black Phoenix
White Light Generator

X-Men: Dark Phoneix

Hollywood has already screwed this story up once, which is a shame -- it's one of the great comic book stories. Sophie Turner will have to step up her game, because her character needs to carry this one.

The Bottom Line: Oops -- Another film in the X-Universe that has been pushed back to 2019. Thanks a lot, 20th Century Fox.
2Deadpool (USA-TX)
Webs We Weave

Deadpool 2

Will Josh Brolin rock as Cable? Will Brianna Hildebrand have a larger role as Negasonic Teenage Warhead? And will the film manage to keep the dark humor on the same high level as the first one? We'll find out in June.

Bottom Line: I really have no complaints about this film (or very minor ones, at least). It's on a par with the first film, and after "Avengers: Infinity War", it's my favorite movie of the year, better than "Black Panther". Rating: 4 of 5 stars
1Avengers
Avengers

Avengers: Infinity War

I'm hoping this will blow my mind. Everything in the Marvel cinematic universe has been leading up to this one and its sequel.

Bottom Line: Pretty epic, in spite of the disappointing ending. Rating: 4.5 of 5 stars
