01.02.23 | Oh damn, this sucks. While I haven't listened to Three 6 Mafia all that much since college (barring more well-known songs like "Sippin' on Some Sizzurp," "Poppin' My Collar," and my personal favorite, "Stay Fly"), I remember I had a dorm neighbor who was a huge Three 6 fan, and would often be playing Mystic Stylez and World Domination at very high volumes. After we became friends in early 2012 or so, I began listening to Three 6 Mafia more, and, having given all of their albums listens around that time without any of them entering regular rotation outside of a handful of tracks, found myself admiring Most Known Unknown and especially World Domination. Maybe I should give World Domination another listen, since I haven't played it in full since around the time Lord Infamous died -- I could really use to hear a full album from them again after the loss of one of their finest members.
Outside of my ramble, though, it's very sad to hear that she's gone (and at a rather young age, too). I can't believe that, given the members of Three 6 Mafia are only in their forties (with some pushing fifty), they've already lost two members of their original sextet lineup. Knocking on wood that DJ Paul, Juicy J, Project Pat, and Crunchy Black can make it through to old age. |

01.02.23 | RIP to another legend. Have never put much thought into it tbh but she might just be my favorite female rapper of all time. She was always one of the best verses on the tracks she was featured on especially during the underground tape days as Triple 6 and those first 4 albums. Her solo stuff was straight fire as well |

01.02.23 | good story jking. i would def recommend revisiting all their stuff from underground tapes to when the smoke clears at least. |

01.02.23 | Thanks for the recommendation. I actually have never heard any of the Underground volumes in full -- I've heard pieces from some of them, but I've never heard the whole albums. I should definitely try them out at some point.
That said, I did revisit World Domination today, and I definitely see why I liked it the most when I originally heard it a decade ago -- "Tear da Club Up" and "Late Night Tip" are great, of course, but other highlights like "Hit a Muthafucka," "Prophet Posse," and "Who Got Dem 9's" make me genuinely surprised that I hadn't really listened to them that much since my early twenties. I could definitely see myself playing it again in full at some point, and I'll probably get to When the Smoke Clears later tonight: I'll likely revisit Mystic Stylez and The End a little later this week, I definitely remember those being very interesting.
I know that the latter two albums tend to be more well-liked among Three 6 fans, but given that When the Smoke Clears has the ever-classic "Sippin' on Some Sizzurp" and "Who Run It" (I don't remember much else about the album, so it should be interesting to hear it again for the first time since at least 2014), I think I'll go there next. |
Drifter
01.02.23 | yeah i like the end and mystic stylez the most. not a huge fan of when the smoke clears but a lot of people are |

01.02.23 | I had like a two year period where damn near all I jammed on a daily basis was their underground tapes, Mystic Stylez, Ch. 1 and Ch. 2 along with some other Memphis underground artists like Dj Sound, DJ Squeeky, Skinny Pimp, Pat, Lowdown Sinista, etc. That whole scene was amazingly ahead of it's time and this group was definitely a massive part of that.
A local rapper I've got on my Facebook friends pointed out that if it is an OD it's sad that one of her first big lines at 15 or 16 was "Call Cris so I can get something white to go up in my nose", sad that even back then kids were getting into harder drugs at those ages. I grew up thinking that was a problem that struck during my generation but I was wrong. |

01.02.23 | I also think When the Smoke Clears was a significant drop in quality. It's got some bangers for sure but all of the albums and solos before it were front to back slaps for me though |
JKing92
01.02.23 | I actually remember liking When the Smoke Clears more than The End, honestly. I think The End was my least favorite of the 1995 to 2000 period (in fact, I remember liking Most Known Unknown more than The End and When the Smoke Clears, though I didn't like it as much as Mystic Stylez and World Domination).
But either way, once again, it'll definitely be interesting to relisten to all three of those albums after having not heard them in full for so long. I really liked getting to hear World Domination again, so I definitely intend to hear the rest of that period (along with Most Known Unknown -- I'm a little bit on the fence with whether or not I'll revisit the other two albums, given that I don't remember particularly liking those albums outside of a couple of songs, but I definitely want to hear the rest). |

01.02.23 | Honestly in my younger years I didn't enjoy The End as much as the others. Went back to it years later though and I absolutely love it now. The production on that one is pretty damn different from the others from that era imo and almost has a circus type vibe going on with a few of the tracks. For me Most Known Unknown was a big comeback. It's their last album that I really dig as a group but it's got a few of their best tracks on there.
If you haven't heard Boos solo albums I recommend digging into them also |
JKing92
01.02.23 | I believe I did hear Boo's solo album Enquiring Minds back in the day (not on my own accord -- it was through my dorm neighbor who was a huge Three 6 Mafia fan, the very same one I mentioned in my first comment here). I remember liking parts of it a good bit ("Where Dem Dollas At?," of course, as well as that posse cut at the very end), but I don't think I gave it as much attention as her work with Three 6. Maybe I should revisit it this weekend after I've checked out Mystic Stylez and The End (as well as Most Known Unknown) again.
I haven't heard her other two, though -- maybe I should check those, as well. |

01.03.23 | I happened to be listening to her music today and went to look her up on youtube just now and saw the news :( rip |
