Ridin' Dirty

One of the most fun times in my sput career was this few week period where me and hawks and aiwaz were bumping every hip hp thread imaginable, writing reviews, and sharing dozens of albums with each other.
2South Central Cartel
'N Gatz We Truss

It all started on 4/20/18 because we were on the nose as balls and it might be April 8th but let's bring it back on a more wide scale level!

Somethin' Serious

Rec albums here and I'll try and get to some but I can't guarantee all. And for anyone that looks on to the list, check something you haven't heard before! Or revisit an old classic you already love.

It's a tired conversation of how much this site slacks on hip hop but let's just try to take one little step forward!

I won't lie, the first time I tried jamming this when I said that I was starting I turned it off immediately and almost came and said it and 1'd it. But I'm glad I gave it a chance at another time because this is dope as balls. Love the beats and his style grew on me cause at first I did not like the words-spilling-out-of-the-mouth flow at first.

REVISIT

I always felt like this was his best album. His other ones always have some flaw from not being super memorable at times or the production and songwriting just kinda lacking but this one is dope. Glad he got Snoop and Cube and 8Ball & MJG on here as well as like half the album produced by Ant Banks. Very fun album and underrated
15Mr. Shadow
Till I Die

REVISIT

Possibly better than Born Without A Konscience which is the one I know better but it's still inconsistent. The shitty party songs are here like they are on BWAK which just totally throw off the vibe. Still overall a good album though and definitely worth a listen for fans of Chicano Rap and gangsta rap

REVISIT

Been a while since I heard this album. I appreciate a lot of it a lot more than I used to now that I’m not going into it for Off Parole 2. His rapping isn’t as good as that album but the production is sooo funky. I couldn’t look past it not being consistently laid back like OP but it’s got its own identity.

jrlikestodance

I'm not huge on the Larry June Type Flow but the beats on here are wicked. Also I realized LNDN DRGS is literally Jay Worthy and Sean House and my dumbass just used the name on streaming to add them to here lmao. I gotta get that merged.

This was a shock. His best album since the Revenue Retrievin' series for sure. He rewound his sound and flow to back then when he wasn't actually trying to land on the beat all the time. Great as balls

Guerilla City

NEW DISCOVERY

Finally checked this dude out after watching this interview of him talking about running credit card scams on the dark web and stealing $20 million. Very fascinating. As far as this album goes though, it's very 2005 west coast hip hop and he acknowledges on the very first song how he sounds just like Biggie which is better than pretending like he doesn't. Some good songs in the beginning. https://youtu.be/11sYJxt7Tso?si=WyoEUEgdy-1kH9AY

Been years since I listened to this and wasn't into his style at all. I've been slowly going back through his catalog since the beginning of the year and he's definitely very dope even if I get a little exhausted still sometimes. Working my way up to Blue Lips which I'm excited for.

Woodie did his thing with the production here it's that classic Woodie sound. Big Tone isn't a super engaging rapper for me but it can definitely grow on me.

Pete Rock is just one of the best man. Production is so killer on here. Song with MC Eiht is good as balls bro.

44DJ Quik
Balance & Options

OLD FAVORITE

DJ Quik doesn't really have a perfect album top to bottom but this one has such a dope nighttime vibe that his others don't. It's very similar to Rhythmalism and iirc is crafted using leftover ideas from those sessions but it's so great. It's wild to think he doesn't look back on this album fondly cause he felt like he half assed it but it's definitely one of his most memorable to me. Pitch In Ona Party is one of the best hip hop songs of all time to me.

Had this in my car for a week and it's great. Onyx always has really great production and performances. I really need to get their second album. Street N's is probably my favorite song but most of the album goes pretty hard. The biggest slip is probably the Shut Em Down Remix.

Underground Vol. 1: 1991-1994

REVISIT

Finishing off going back through all of Three 6 to rate them. Wasn't a fan as much as I was the first times I jammed it but it's still good. Maybe just listened in the wrong setting.

3
53Moneybagg Yo
Time Served

REVISIT/Hawks

At first I was enjoying this but it still just becomes repetitive. Average modern trap but Moneybagg Yo is slightly more interesting than boring and has some funny lines. “She wanted to ride in the rover I told her the uber was closer” will always be hilariously cold.

187 Ride By

NEW DISCOVERY

I’ve always known his second album but never jammed this cause it’s never been on streaming. Finally downloaded it and it’s cool but it’s very similar as No Holds Barred. Very uncommercial, raunchy, explicit gang rap. It’s fine for what it is and would scratch an itch depending on the vibe you’re feeling but better for playlisting than a full listen. Maybe both of his albums can be combined into one great one. Still a Compton legend though and responsible for coordinating the Bloods and Crips albums so by no means is this a slight against him and his contributions to hip hop lol.

3
57Young Thug
Barter 6

REVISIT

This is still just in one ear and out the other overall. He’s one of those rappers that will be onto a good melody and then just making a strange sound or inflection that ruins it all.

2.5
58Andre Nickatina
Raven in My Eyes

REVISIT

This is so sick. Instantly my second favorite Nickatina album after revisiting. It’s been way too long. I always remembered it being cool but I don’t think I ever finished. So many hilarious lines and sick beats complimented by his classic style. Awesome follow up to the classic I Hate You With A Passion. Should get more attention. Meow meow meow meow meowwww.

59Paul Wall and Chamillionaire
Get Your Mind Correct

REVISIT

This isn't close to as good as I thought it was years ago. Some really bad generic 00s hip hop hooks but some genuinely good moments mixed in. Makes a very confused listen whether it wants to be completely commercial or not. Still an interesting moment in history considering the heights they would soon go to separately.

3
60Andre Nickatina
Khan! The Me Generation

REVISIT

I was very surprised how much I still enjoyed this. It's still the most recent thing I've heard from Andre (2010) but it's very neat hearing him do this frankenstein commercial but traditionally weird Nickatina album. Very fun and funny stuff.

3.5
61Master P
Get Away Clean

REVISIT

Unsurprisingly still the worst album of his early years. Incredibly amateurish with only just enough charm to get you through to the end without disregarding his later work. He truly sucked at rapping so badly in the early years it's astonishing. It only makes his rapid improvement over the following years even more impressive. Also the beats sound like they were assembled with comically rusty and loud trash cans.

2.5
62Quando Rondo
QPac

REVISIT

The first couple songs are tolerable because they are the first couple songs and then there's 16 more songs and I came out the end of this album's wet asshole with gonorrhea of the fucking brain.

1
63Keak Da Sneak
Retaliation

NEW DISCOVERY

At first I gave this a 1.5 because Keak is a legend but I couldn't get past three songs. Fuck this album and it's terrible beats and Keak's non existent flow. It doesn't even sound like rapping it just sounds like he's doing the rap version of Mike Patton grunting into a microphone for an hour.

64Oxnard Pugz
Strike 3: Down with the Cause

NEW DISCOVERY

Pretty solid stuff. Definitely need to listen more to latch onto highlights but it was quite enjoyable.

3.5
65Mr. Criminal
Closer To God

NEW DISCOVERY

I hadn't planned on checking a new Criminal album cause they're generally all the same but it made me remember why Criminal was so good. Even at his worst he's still highly enjoyable because of some je ne sais quoi about him. He gets pretty competent production and his flow is just fun to listen to. At this point he's mastered the art of decency.

66Dee Cisneros
The Cards I Was Dealt

NEW DISCOVERY

Co worker rec'd me this after talking about Woodie and Big Tone. This guy gives me a lot of Nipsey Hussle vibes from his raspy flow and his motivational lyrics. Pretty good stuff I definitely recommend it to someone looking for some more recent west coast hip hop.

3.5

Decent modern chicano rap. Not really much to say about this one it was mostly just decent background music to me.

REVISIT

Kurupt's side project with CJ Ginavece from when he was still beefing with Daz. The first like 5 songs are so sick and have such unique production in my opinion. The album closes with a diss towards Daz which was probably the most aggressive one Kurupt did during the war because he spends half the song just shouting expletives at Daz and you can hear the spit rapidly flying around the recording booth. Awesome stuff.

Speakerboxxx/The Love Below

REVISIT

I used to be obsessed with the Love Below disc. I would have called it one of my favorite albums back in 2020. After a few years of not listening to it, I don't feel the same way. And Speakerboxxx has taken a fall in my appreciation as well. Still better than Stankonia though.

Never appreciated this one cause I'd only jam it like once a year but it's so dope. Super smokey and green.

While leaning closer to ATLiens, it still has some of that overly flamboyant annoyingness that's on Stankonia which is a no no when it happens but still a great album. Need the cd.

NEW DISCOVERY

I've seen people over time talk about how this was an underrated album and after finally listening to it I would probably agree. Still definitely some bad beats and some typical Spice 1 performances but not bad.

3

Platinum O.G. 2

NEW DISCOVERY

This one however just came out a few days ago and absolutely crushed the original. Definitely made me view Spice 1 in a more positive light given he hasn't dropped anything really great in nearly 30 years. His 90's run was always legendary but it's great that this album show's he's still got it.
