05.12.17 | I agree with Adolf. It's impossible to make such a definitive statement. Musical taste is so subjective. Grateful Dead and Velvet Underground have a huge, loyal (but very specific) fan base. I think you gotta go a little more mainstream with some bands like
Dinosaur Jr.
Faith No More
Tool
Pearl Jam
Primus |
onionbubs
05.12.17 | of the bands listed i'd probably go REM tho i prefer modest mouse to them |

05.12.17 | Okay, please excuse me in advance for my answer, but let me explain. I had this conversation with my department at work and then other people in my life and though the definition of 'greatest' can be debated, the most successful American rock band is probably....
Aerosmith
Which sucks. |

everybodies answer puts a different weight on these, plus their own musical tastes, so nobody will have the right answer although using these my own top 5 would be
Grateful dead, Stooges, Doors, Aerosmith, metallica
surprised nobody has said the Beach Boys, it used to be a popular answer |

05.12.17 | My vote would be probably The Beach Boys, but that's only if you consider their '65-'72 work and nothing else. Eagles is a safe bet too, their greatest hits 1+2 are essential classic rock listening |

05.12.17 | If you want an "objective" answer, it depends on which factors come into play when evaluatating what makes a band "great" and I don't think any of the ones on the list (barring maybe Nirvana) would make the cut due to lack of influence (debatable for REM and Talking Heads, but I don't think they're quite there).
Metallica should def be considered in here
If you're going a more subjective route then obvs everyone is going to say something different |
Avagantamos
05.12.17 | fugazi |
Joeman82
05.12.17 | Bad Religion |

05.13.17 | The Good Rats.

Davil667
05.13.17 | On a personal basis it's probably King's X for me.
In general I'd like to throw Van Halen into the discussion as they were huge back then. Rush, Guns 'N Roses, Aerosmith are also contenders I guess. |
Ocean of Noise
05.13.17 | Rush are Canadian smh |

05.14.17 | America invented rock bud |
wham49
05.14.17 | maybe
England made huge strides on the original
If you add Dylan and Springsteen and Zappa it looks better, but the USA have nobody like the stones, Beatles, Sabbath, IM, Motorhead, Priest,Damned, Kinks, and loads of others who not only inovated but had longevity. in USA you innovated, but then faded away |
