11.22.16 | None of these are really black metal but I understand them as gateway albums.
If you're truly interested in black metal, I'm making a series of lists detailing the genre's history, and this is the first list in the series: http://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=1046054&listid=170968
The more you know. |

11.22.16 | 1 is probably the perfect starting album. Great for easing into the genre and it's a really good album on its own. |

it's 90% not black metal |

11.22.16 | lol snox being dumb as per always nice |
Astral Abortis
11.22.16 | its not even dumb the album's just mostly neofolk that's just a fact |
Rastapunk
11.22.16 | All of them are black metal, they're just a little bit more than that. Ulver is atmospheric BM, Ecaille is Blackgaze (Black Metal + Shoegaze) and 3 is... well Agalloch Black Metal (folk, atmos and BM).
I got into BM the same way you did (apart from Alcest which I discovered a few month ago), also listened to Enslaved - In Times, Windir - Arntor.
I'll make a list of how I got into BM in the first place if you want to check it out. |

11.22.16 | not even neofolk tho lmao |
Astral Abortis
11.22.16 | it's like neofolk rock/neofolk.
let's divvy up the genre times.
Capitel I: I Troldskog Faren Vild - 7:51, no black metal, all like neofolk n' roll.
Capitel II: Soelen Gaaer Bag Aase Ned - 1:06 seconds neofolk, 1:00 black metal, 1:30 folk rock, 2:00 black metal, rest of the song is just folk rock with a neofolk outro.
So far, that's 14 minutes into the album with less than three minutes of black metal.
Capitel III: Graablick Blev Hun Vaer - a grand total of two minutes of black metal, again.
That's 21 minutes and only 5 minutes of bm material.
Capitel IV: Een Stemme Locker - all neofolk.
Capitel V: Bergtatt - Ind I Fjeldkamrene - 54 seconds of black metal, then acoustic stuff, another bounce around of folk rock and black metal, this track overall has the most consistent bm time-wise, but is overall still about five minutes of an eight minutes timeline.
So that makes this a 35 minute long album with 25 minutes of material that has no relation to black metal. |

11.22.16 | I don't think you know what neofolk is |
Rastapunk
11.22.16 | I think he wanted to say Dark Folk. |
Astral Abortis
11.22.16 | I know plenty about what neofolk is, and Ulver did plenty of it, regardless of the fact that some people will call their style "dark folk" instead because they're not Death In June or something.
Neofolk is a contemporary take on traditional folk usually with traditional instruments. It was born from a very specific scene but grew pretty quickly to be more inclusive overall, and Ulver sat pretty neatly under that term especially with Kveldssanger. Bergtatt does have more neofolk influenced rock/metallish type sections than straight neofolk but neofolk was never exactly the most well defined style to begin with, with its fingers ultimately being in so many pies as it expanded.
Some bands go a more martial industrial route with it or some go more traditional with the contemporary framework to hold it in. stop being daft, basically |

11.22.16 | Stop bitching about these obscure genre tags, basically. I feel like everyone feels the need to push certain bands in a corner, when it comes to which genre the fall under. Who cares? |
Keyblade
11.22.16 | i mustve been imagining the tremolo picked riffs, blast beats and bm shrieks on 1 |
Astral Abortis
11.22.16 | Look up for further analysis into why 1 isnt really a bm album rather than a folk metal album with some short black metal sections |
Rastapunk
11.22.16 | I'd still put Bergtatt in Atmos BM, the general atmosphere is closer to BM than anything. In fact when he gives the harsh vocals the only difference is the blas beat that kicked in, guitars don't change style, that's because the whole atmosphere is built on BM foundation. |

11.22.16 | "stop being daft, basically"
I think this applies to you more than it does myself but w/e
THIS IS THE GRAVE OF THE 80s
THIS IS NEOFOLK
THIS IS ME TAKING MYSELF WAY TOO SERIOUSLY
THIS IS SNOXXX |
Astral Abortis
11.22.16 | I'd argue that Ulver's atmosphere is built against a black metal foundation but I guess it depends on how you look at it.
@random alt: that was me actually taking myself not seriously, hence how wonderfully ridiculous it is, quoting darkthrone and all that |
Rastapunk
11.22.16 | Wait you're serious? You don't the BM atmosphere? |
Astral Abortis
11.22.16 | Pretty sure everyone else got all mad and serious when i claimed none of these were very black metal, which wasn't meant to be a slight, as all these albums were gateway records for me into extreme metal too. Except 2 and 3 were different albums by those bands for me personally |
Astral Abortis
11.22.16 | I don't think Bertatt has the sound of black metal, no. I view black metal very differently to most people who see it as an evolution of Burzum and Tranny Hunger. |
Archelirion
11.22.16 | Tbf, Nattens is by far more black metal than Bergtatt is. I'd still call Bergtatt BM, although it's not purely so by any means... and that's okay.
Either way, always nice to see somebody else get into the genre. I got into BM through the Cascadian-y/atmospheric-y stuff (so Wolves in the Throne Room, Ash Borer, early Oskoreien) so maybe try there :] |
Astral Abortis
11.22.16 | Nattens is more in the vein of real black metal for sure, they had some brute force riffs and anger on that one. That is an album that captures black metal spirit and atmosphere.
And yeah my comments were never meant to mean that not being pure bm means not being good. |
Astral Abortis
11.22.16 | Although I do personally not like Bergtatt |

11.22.16 | I actually mostly agree that Bergtatt is not really bm (though I'm not sure what else exactly to call it, I don't think neofolk covers it). But that's also why it's a great entry point, the blackened style fits so smoothly with everything else they're doing that someone diving into the genre has other things to focus on.
Nattens is one of my favourite BM albums though, definitely give that a spin at some point OP. |
