budgie
01.26.20 | "W.A.S.P. - W.A.S.P."
just wanna say i fucking love first 2 wasp lps but i don't really put them in the traditional heavy metal group. meaning more like nwobhm type stuff than the sunset blvd variety |
budgie

01.26.20 | thin lizzy isn't really in the same musical category as dark star, praying mantis, or heavy load |
Inveigh
01.26.20 | thin lizzy is one of my 5-10 favorite bands, but yeah they ain't trad metal to me (at least not the vibe i get from this list) |
Gallantin
01.26.20 | i know they're not really trad metal, except from a few songs on Thunder and Lightning. I just really love Thin Lizzy and want him to put them up here. |
Inveigh
01.26.20 | well fuck yeah man, i definitely respect that. and good point about Thunder and Lightning, i love that record and it def has a couple trad elements to it.
Lizzy is tough to contextualize in terms of grouping them with similar bands from the era, but I usually think of them in terms of like Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Sir Lord Baltimore and Y&T, if that makes sense. Speaking of Y&T, they're playing a small venue in my town this spring (Arcada Theater in St. Charles, IL). I really need to go, they're a super underrated band. |
Inveigh
01.26.20 | also, Black Star Riders played that same venue a couple years ago and I missed it (pretty sure due to the birth of one of my children, which i will hold against him later). need to see them too |
InFlamesWeThrash666
01.26.20 | Wrathblade - Into the Netherworld's Realm |
Trifolium
01.26.20 | Cooooool list!!! I need to get into some of these.
If you find any that are Trif-proof, I'd love to know! I'm going to check the ones that look cool too. |
Faenrir
01.26.20 | For Sortilege, the second album is the best, first one is an EP but the EP and the 2 LPs are pretty darn good. |
Thalassic

01.27.20 | Greeeeat list! Please add Savage Grace - Master of Disguise!

Gallantin
01.27.20 | Master of Disguise is a speed metal album, not a power metal album |
Relinquished
01.27.20 | snox keeps the gate once again |
budgie
01.27.20 | in terms of 1985 those two terms are interchangeable |
Gallantin
01.27.20 | I disagree, they both had their place then as they do now. They are easily distinct, ESPECIALLY in terms of 1985 |
Relinquished
01.27.20 | their place back then was usually on the same bill
it really didn't matter back then as it does now. ridiculous to say it does when you weren't around back then to confirm it. |

01.27.20 | Killer Dwarfs - Dirty Weapons |

01.27.20 | better not listen to those running wild recs then |
budgie
01.27.20 | fun sidenote: i played a crazy fun fucking show once upon a time with the most fun bill: alestorm, swashbuckle, i think tyr was at that one, back when folk metal was in full swing. swashbuckle was so sick!!! they had like inflatable palm trees and shit |
Thalassic
01.27.20 | There's never a good reason to pass up on a Running Wild rec tho |

Trifolium
01.27.20 | Love how most of these go for hand-drawn pictures as covers. |
budgie
01.27.20 | maybe i've heard 1 running wild rec before, not sure. which one to try? i've been looping dark star like a bad boy. |
budgie
01.27.20 | @trif YES, #15 is one of my fav album covers haha. |
Source
01.27.20 | black hand inn is running wild's best album imo |
manosg
01.27.20 | Check Death or Glory, budg. If its opener doesn't grab you by the balls, then Running Wild is not your thing. |
manosg
01.27.20 | Black Hand Inn is also up there for sure, nice pick. |
Trifolium
01.27.20 | Oh man yeah that one rules hard. Is the music any good? Want to check that now haha!
Really great list budgie, why the hell isn't it featured yet???!!!! |
budgie
01.27.20 | "Check Death or Glory, budg." i'm REALLY excited to check death or glory because their stronger than evil album has been one of my favorite 80s hm albums for a very fucking long time now! such a crazy fun album.
"Is the music any good? Want to check that now haha!"
it's about the atmosphere, not the songs or guitar work. kinda like transilvanian hunger. if you dig the atmosphere maybe you'll love the album like i do. but there's probably a reason nobody on planet earth knows about that album. a plus: they're DANISH! maybe egarr knows them? |
budgie
01.27.20 | oh ok so running wild has an album called death or glory, i was looking at the heavy load album (on this list) called death or glory ππππππ big sunglasses = cool band |
Donchivo
01.27.20 | Master of Disguise is way more than 'only' pure speed metal. More diverse, chunky and epic than speed metal commonly is. It is way closer to modern power metal (apart from that it doesn't suck...) |
wham49
01.28.20 | Lucifers friend/ Lucifer friend
Pentagram/ first daze |
Gallantin
01.28.20 | "it really didn't matter back then as it does now. ridiculous to say it does when you weren't around back then to confirm it."
Oh i mean of course it didnt really matter back then. Sodom used to be called annihilating deathcore. Genre names were all over the place. I just mean in terms of sound they were always distinct and that speed metal was pretty well defined sound-wise in that era
"More diverse, chunky and epic than speed metal commonly is. It is way closer to modern power metal (apart from that it doesn't suck...)"
It's nothing like modern power metal. Unless, again, you're confusing modern power metal for speed metal. |
GhostB1rd
01.28.20 | This is harassment. |
budgie
01.28.20 | i dont care enough about u to harass u |
budgie
01.28.20 | if we take crystal logic as archetypal uspm and heavy metal maniac as archetypal speed metal there are a million bands that are 50% both. |
Gallantin
01.28.20 | I definitely wouldn't take Crystal Logic as archetypal uspm haha
Manilla Road and Crystal Logic especially are more in line with a somewhat underrecognised style of heavy metal called epic heavy metal. Or just epic metal, if you prefer.
You all think I'm worse than before dont you |
budgie
01.28.20 | worse? |

budgie
01.28.20 | i will get to them both for sure, just want to make this list as close to a master list of tygers of pan tang type music as possible
