Brrrrrrreakdowns for fun and loveliness
My favourite breakdowns of the last decade or so - not ranked and not exhaustive by any means. Looking at this list, 06 to 08 really were prime real estate for the throw down. What did you like in the last decade? What's that? You hate breakdowns? Why sir, I do beg your pardon! |
1 | | All Shall Perish Awaken the Dreamers
Stabbing to Purge Dissimulation
Heft massive |
2 | | Bring Me the Horizon Suicide Season
Chelsea Smile
Such a fun album, think what you want about the pasty little pricks but they wrote some good shit (except That's The Spirit, that album is dogshit) |
3 | | Widow the Sea Novella of the Ocean
Emergence AD
This band should have been what Thy Art Is Murder became (i.e. popular and loved) because they were better in every way. Their great horse-throat vocalist left and then fuck knows where it all went. |
4 | | The Contortionist Exoplanet
Vessel
Fuck everything they've done since, this album is the jam |
5 | | Zao The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here
Killing Tim 'Til It's Time To Die
If Steve Albini recorded deathcore acts maybe there could be peace in our time. This album (and indeed the band) is an unsung gem (probs cos they are/were Christians and it's cooler to like esoteric black forest cassettes recorded in the stand of trees behind your dads garage with your mums mop bucket and reference Bathory in everything you do/say/wank over). |
6 | | August Burns Red Messengers
Back Burner
Love how these guys change it up just enough make their shit punishing and interesting - then ramp it it right up with their tightness and production (oooh that tightness). |
7 | | Slice the Cake The Man With No Face
City of Ghosts
Cross-continent content that works and works with crunch! I don't even mind the clean vocals, it just all sits rather nicely wouldn't you say. Yes. |
8 | | Parkway Drive Horizons
Boneyards
The quintessential core breakdown, I still listen to it once or twice a year and get all misty in the dick. It was such a heavy breakdown it bled the band dry of imagination and talent on all their subsequent offerings. That's heavy. |
9 | | Converge No Heroes
Bare My Teeth
Don't. Be. Afraid. Perhaps my favourite album, just raw and very lovely. |
10 | | Misery Signals Controller
Weight of the World
A breath of fresh air and followed faithfully on from the best parts of Mirrors, Controller was heavy as all fuck with so much filthy churn (lol sounds like a put down "you filthy churn, get outta here!") and a sprinkle of that fantastic clean roomy guitar they're so great at. Their cover of Pink Flyod's "Us and Them" from the Homefront soundtrack is a great example of what they're capable of but I was kind of disappointed with Absent Light, I don't think they pushed further. Anyways, this song is where it's at so all good! |
