Best Everything of 2017
I know this is a full year late, but I don't think I'll have the time to remake actually descript writeups for all these so I'll just drop my main three lists here. This'll include the best drumming performances, songs, and albums of 2017. Enjoy! |
100 | | The Great Old Ones EOD: A Tale of Dark Legacy
Top 20 Drumming Performances of 2017:
20. "The Ritual" (Leo Isnard) |
99 | | King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard Murder Of The Universe
19. "The Balrog" (Michael Cavanaugh & Eric Moore)
The constant fills are pretty impressive on here. Plus they were bound to be on this list with 5 albums. |
98 | | Eidola To Speak, To Listen
18. “Houses Movement III: Rust/Rebuild” (Matt Hansen) |
97 | | Grizzly Bear Painted Ruins
17. "Sky Took Hold" (Christopher Bear)
Tribal intro for the victory! |
96 | | The National Sleep Well Beast
16. “Guilty Party” (Bryan Devendorf)
This is a nice performance with excellent production and nice improv touches. |
95 | | Fox Vibes Mantra
15. “The Straw Mountian” (Anthony Lusk-Simone) |
94 | | Everything Everything A Fever Dream
14. “Put Me Together” (Mike Spearman)
The amazing little jazz technique they had going here made this a sleeper highlight off the album. |
93 | | Shadow of Intent Reclaimer
13. "The Tartarus Impalement” (Matt Kohanowski) |
92 | | Mastodon Emperor of Sand
12. “Ancient Kingdom” (Brann Dailor)
"Andromeda" came close but this just edged it out. |
91 | | Havok Conformicide
11. "Ingsoc” (Pete Webber)
Great drumming production on this as well. |
90 | | Ne Obliviscaris Urn
10. Ne Obliviscaris - “Intra Venus” (Dan Presland)
This dude's a total monster on the double bass pedals. |
89 | | Name ...You Are Mostly Nowhere
9. “When Ocean Meets Sky: Cutting in a Corner's Circle” (Armando Armas) |
88 | | Exist So True, So Bound
8. "To Sever the Strings” (Matt Clise)
A surprisingly strong performance from such a weak album. |
87 | | Dreadnought A Wake In Sacred Waves
7. “Vacant Sea” (Jordan Clancy)
Jordan Clancy is one of the most underrated musicians around. |
86 | | John Frum A Stirring In The Noos
6. “He Come” (Eli Litwin) |
85 | | Stolas Stolas
5. “Anhedonia” (Carlos Marquez)
RIP Stolas. Also, the fact that a singer recorded one of the top 5 performances of 2017 is mind boggling. |
84 | | Persefone Aathma
4. “Prison Skin” (Sergi Verdeguer)
The intro switches between 21/16 and 9/8 by each measure. That's not even counting the spectacular bridge. |
83 | | Bubblemath Edit Peptide
3. “The Sensual Con” (James Flagg)
ALL-TIME GREAT
Gotta thank BeyondCosby for rec'ing this album. Weird time signatures (the intro is in 17/16, many parts are in 11/8), wonky fills, and an insane ending establishes this as a performance to remember. |
82 | | Nova Collective The Further Side
2. Nova Collective – “Dancing Machines” (Matt Lynch)
WINNER: Best Drumming Album of 2017 (The Further Side)
ALL-TIME GREAT
If there was any hype for Lynch's appearance on Cynic's upcoming album, this song should be the prime representation of that hype. The paradiddle section and the drum solo just speak for themselves here. |
81 | | Leprous Malina
1. “Coma” (Baard Kolstad)
WINNER: Best Drumming Performance of 2018
ALL-TIME GREAT
Baard Kolstad has now established himself as one of the best drummers in the modern era. This performance is up there with "Rewind" from The Congregation, which makes this yet another all-time great performance from Kolstad. |
80 | | Blanck Mass World Eater
