SPUTNIK LEAGUE II

What was better than the inaugural WrestleMania? WrestleMania 2! it had Mr T! This is the second Sputnik League - I cannot promise that B. A. Baracus will show up for it, but I can promise that it will be a cool and fun time
1The Human League
Hysteria

- SPUTNIK LEAGUE II - The Rulebook -

* To take place on www.musicleague.com (or the app if you would prefer) by invite only
* No more than 20 competitors
* Every round, each competitor submits a track for a specific theme
* Certain rounds may come with additional criteria - however, voters will vote however they please
* Combatants will have 7 days to choose and submit a track, 14 to listen and vote (pending general consensus)
* If you submit a track but do not vote, any votes for your track will be discarded
* If you do not submit a track, you will not be able to vote
* If you miss 2 deadlines, I reserve the right to remove you from the league. Similarly if you find yourself unable to commit mid-league, please don't hesitate to let me know and I will withdraw you from the league
* Each player is allocated 10 votes per round. The maximum amount of votes you can give any one track is 5 - the spread of votes is entirely up to the player
2Major League
Hard Feelings

- SPUTNIK LEAGUE II - Introducing! -

* In the second Sputnik League, you will, by rule, need to cast ONE downvote per round (pending general consensus). Do you downvote a track you particularly despise? Or something that flouts the round theme egregiously? Something that you just KNOW has been submitted by a mortal enemy? OR is it a DOUBLE BLUFF??
* To avoid League Fatigue, I am proposing 10 rounds, each with a 3 week turnaround.
3Leagues
Alone Together

- SPUTNIK LEAGUE II - Addendums -

* Unless folks determine that we need more time to rest, I would like to propose that we commence track submissions on 8th January 2024
* If reigning champion Milo would like to participate, he will be able to decide the theme of the opening round
* Other theme suggestions are welcome, with the caveat that I would like to have no repeats from the first league
* The league page itself will be created in due course in order to start in January

5The Prodigy
The Fat of the Land

ROUND ONE: MILO's CHOICE
"A controversial track - it can be controversial for any old reason, just let us know why if it isn't obvious"

1st: Conmaniac [+17]
The Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up
"Title helps but this was def controversial upon release"

2nd: fogza [+16]
Rhoda Dakar - The Boiler

3rd: Sinternet [+16]
Victor Jara - El Derecho de Vivir en Paz
6Four Tet
Sixteen Oceans

ROUND TWO: SIDE QUEST
"Submit a track from a side project that is as good as, or potentially even BETTER than, its main project counterpart. Provide context in ur submission comments"

1st: Sinternet [+19]
KH (Four Tet) - Only Human
"KH is an alias of Four Tet. This track was absolutely huge in electronic circles when it came out, getting played out everywhwere as an IDbefore being finally dropped by Kieran on a different alias. Samples Nelly Furtado, so you know it';s good. Maybe not the safest pick here, because one of the biggest draws to this is how fucking good this is mashed up with other tracks. But even on it's own it's still an absolute ripper and showcases his amazing percussion skills. Get dancing!"

2nd: Mort. [+18]
Geotic - Gondolier

3rd: Pots [+16]
Swing Slow - Capybara
7BOaT (JPN)
Listening Suicidal

ROUND THREE: DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE
"Hang on a tick, this track is not what it first seems..."

1st: JohnnyoftheWell [+21]
BOAT - ラッキー・スイサイダル
"0:56 /greatest song of all time"

2nd: BlazinBlitzer [+17]
"The first minute or so is this atmospheric glitchy drone section that suddenly turns into a noise-rock/post-hardcore banger that absolutely slaps. One of the best album openers of the last decade-and-a-half."

3rd: Pots [+17]
"two distinct tones with a clear through-line served by the percussion and bass that make it - while disparate - evident that they belong to the same song, similarly to how Jekyll and Hyde inhabit one body. The song starts out manic and dungeonous, building in unnerved tension before releasing into colourful, summery, jazz tinged chords. The dankness creeps in again but fails to consume, this time the brightness releases stronger and ushers in a calm reconciliation of the opposing forces. Fin."
8Shibusashirazu
Shibuboshi

ROUND FOUR: 21st CENTURY JAZZ
"This is the jazz round, but STOP right there! It's gotta be from the year 2000 onwards, excluding years that haven't happened yet"

1st: SlothcoreSam [+19]
SHIBUSASHIRAZU - ドラゴ
--no comment given to submission--

2nd: Avagantamos [+16]
Amon Tobin - Slowly
"quite thankful that the one album in my collection with a jazz-adjacent genre tag on RYM narrowly makes the cutoff point. (even though the year 2000 is still technically part of the 20th century)"

3rd: Pots [+14]
Nubian Twist - Keeper
"💅💅💅💅"
9Shaggy
Hot Shot

ROUND FIVE: LAST BITES
"You are an inmate on death row, and despite your heinous, heinous crimes, have been permitted the chance to listen to one last track before they flip the switch on the electric chair. What it is?

CONDITION: There is an 8:00 cap for submissions, we got a lot of executions to get through, keep it moving!"

1st: SlothcoreSam [+20]
Shaggy - It Wasn't Me
"I'm still trying to convince myself I'm innocent. Plus you get the bonus benefit of welcoming death after listening."

2nd: Conmaniac [+19]
Built to Spill - I Would Hurt a Fly
"Good enough reason for the chair, I’m sure."

3rd: Pots [+15]
Black Moon - Reality (Killing Everyý) - Vocal Mix
"I don’t need to pander to you fools. My taste is immaculate and inscrutable. This is MY funeral. (!!!DISCLAIMER!!!: chorus lyrics *DO NOT* reflect how I wound up in the chair). BLAAAPP BLAAPP"
10gyrofield
A Faint Glow of Bravery

ROUND SIX: MIDNIGHT
"Some tracks just hit different in the dead of night, when you feel like you’re the only person alive awake. For best results, check this playlist when all is dark - see if they hit for you too"

1st: anat [+22]
gyrofield - Maybes
"for asphalt surfing city skulking, existing only under streetlights"

2nd: BlazinBlitzer [+17]
Portishead - Biscuit
"One of Portishead’s absolute best. It’s got the vibe of a demented film noir with a solid helping of lust. I find it fitting for a lonely (or partnered, whatever the occasion ;)) night."

3rd: Sinternet [+15]
AgonyOST - Feels Like Florence
"Maybe future garage is cheating but idc this is ultimate eerily quiet but still bright 3am city vibes."
