...Linda Perh..she's here too nice and Syd Barrett!
How about Comus? and Love? :o |
Dewinged
11.20.23 | 150.
How?
I doubt I'll ever use it though, my obsession with 100 is very well documented. |
Dewinged
11.20.23 | Also props for 150, a rare sight. |
SandwichBubble
11.20.23 | @Ars Comus is definitely coming (list is in loose chronological order and I just started 1971). Love I consider more rock than folk. Though, a few bands on this list are on the same borderline, so maybe I messed up. Oh well, can't go back now. Blame sput's outdated list maker.

It's just a trick a certain user taught me.

11.20.23 | "It's just a trick a certain user taught me."
you're now the third I've seen using this spell and if you mfs don't start talking, I will have to call the A-Team, MacGyver, and Michael Knight. |
JohnnyoftheWell
11.20.23 | on the off-chance that you're planning on carrying on into the distance while preserving a loose chronology, every entry after around #220 will randomise its order every time you update the list |
Dewinged
11.20.23 | Oh here's the second. |
bellovddd
11.20.23 | folk me thats a lot of music |

SandwichBubble
11.20.23 | Sorry folks, I fell asleep. Thanks all.
@Dewinged I would tell you, but I've been sworn to secrecy. It's up to them if they want to share it with you.
@Johnny Thank you, that's good intel. I might have to split this into a few parts then. |
MeatSalad
11.20.23 | Hell of a list. Heard about 3 albums on this whole thing lol, those being the Exuma, Neil Young and Jackson C Frank ones.
I really wanna check more, if you had to pick like a top 3 to rec, would what they be? |
SandwichBubble
11.20.23 | I'm gonna give you the certified classics:
Phil Ochs - Pleasures of the Harbor (orchestrated folk pop, similar to Simon and Garfunkel)
Michael Chapman - Fully Qualified Survivor (classic 70s folk, David-Bowie-adjacent artist)
Dave Bixby - Ode To Quetzalcoatl (depressive Christian cult folk)
But really, I would recommend everything on this list. All killer, no filler. Maybe except for the Various Artists and the Indian releases, those are just for me. |
chemicalmarriage
11.20.23 | Only 150 this is a disservice |
SandwichBubble
11.20.23 | We're going all the way, don't worry. I'll make you proud, mama. |
PitchforkArms
11.20.23 | Excellent inclusions in the early years, man! I think this could use some Dave Van Ronk, Blind Willie Johnson, and maybe eve some Louvin Brothers (if the dip into bluegrass/country can still qualify). I am going to check lots of these. Any specific recs? My taste tends to lean towards stripped down 40s and 50s country/folk/blues/bluegrass. |
protokute
11.20.23 | Nice!!!
Still waiting for some other stuff, hope they will appear here soon :) |
MeatSalad
11.20.23 | @sandwich appreciate it! I'll peep em soon |
SandwichBubble
11.20.23 | @PitchforkArms I haven't heard the other two, but I was going to put a blind willie johnson compilation on here later on, since he didn't really release full records.
As for recs, my folk knowledge pre-1960 is very limited, but for what you described:
Woody Guthrie - Dust Bowl Ballads
Pete Seeger - Love Songs For Friends and Foes
Ramblin' Jack Elliott - Jack Takes The Floor
@protokute There's still more to come, for sure! But if what you're expecting is before 1970, then that train has all but left the station.
@MeatSalad hope you dig at least one of them! I went broad with those recs. |
PitchforkArms
11.20.23 | Sweeeet. Will listen!
Highly recommend Satan is Real by The Louvin Brothers, as well as Dave Van Ronk Sings (Tell Old Bill and Dink's Song are both all-time level folk tracks) |
SandwichBubble
11.20.23 | Will check, thank you!
I can't guarantee that I'll add them here, because again: sput's list maker is shit. But I might shift some stuff around. |
SlothcoreSam
11.20.23 | How many of these did you have to add to the database?
The Folk'n hero we need! |
protokute
11.20.23 | Oh okay, then! For 60's I've only missed the Peter, Paul and Mary album from 1962, I guess. |
SandwichBubble
11.20.23 | @SlothcoreSam Not as many as you would think, but still a lot.
@protokute That's another group I haven't heard an album by! Sloppy, sloppy, on my part. |
protokute
11.20.23 | Some of it could be a bit too sweet for you, but I love it! |
protokute
11.20.23 | already saved a bunch of stuff i didn't know to check |
SandwichBubble
11.20.23 | I can stomach some sugar for some good folk pop.
Hope you find something you like in here! |
MeatSalad
11.20.23 | That Michael Chapman album was great, stoked to dig into the rest. Might've found my next rabbit hole |
SandwichBubble
11.20.23 | Glad you liked it! I don't want to inundate you with recs, but if you want more, feel free to ask. |
AsleepInTheBack
