11.30.15 | Of course not. |
SharkTooth
11.30.15 | Not really, much of the reason these albums are considered classics to begin with is that they established the standard for today's music. If one of these albums were released today it would only be recognized as solid as it would being nothing original to the table. |
romulanrancor
11.30.15 | Good question. I'd say no. |
EvoHavok
11.30.15 | Nuh-uh. Some of them would still be highly appreciated, however. |
SharkTooth
11.30.15 | something like 5 would probably be a 4 if released today tho |
AnimalsAsSummit
11.30.15 | well it depends; if they were released today, then they would have never been released previously, and thus music wouldn't be the same. some of these would still have a big impact. i think the question raises a lot more unanswerable questions however, especially if because the release of some of these albums didn't occur until modern day. the state of music would be different, no question. to what degree, is unknowable, i think. |
supremejelly
11.30.15 | Probably not, with the exception of 1 maybe. |
Relinquished
11.30.15 | so eloquent AAS, if only it actually was
classic albums are all about the right timing. the albums above didn't have the reach albums now have, but at the same time they do. more or less AAS is trying to say that if a band like Led didn't have their legacy and influence and instead released their music in this globalized and hyper-connected world, then the many factors that led the Zep to be famous and "classic" wouldn't come to them as easily. |
Zig
11.30.15 | Agree with Relinquished and AAS.
I mean, those albums introduced something new to music, and music is made by unique eras; if guys like Bach released Baroque music today, no one would really care about because it would not be new.
Let's face it, would One Direction sell as much as today if they were in the 70's? |
Valkyrion
11.30.15 | Definitely not |
torts
11.30.15 | maybe 4 |
Aftertheascension
11.30.15 | 1 and 4 would.
Metallica is simple by today's standards. It's a classic because of how it influenced thrash. |
AnimalsAsSummit
11.30.15 | @relinquished hit the nail on the head |
DoofusWainwright
11.30.15 | urgh, this question is horrible sput-logic bait. Yes they'd still be classics because luckily their reputations and enjoyment weren't based on being 'pioneering' rather they spoke to people and contained great music. This site and the over emphasis on albums creating new genre labels lol. If they were released now for the hypothetical proposition to take place they'd have to use more up to date production and make a few minor changes otherwise the whole idea is super silly
Honestly, how many albums released this year are better in terms of vision, message and song writing compared to the ones listed above? There's your answer |
Calc
11.30.15 | not even close |
DoofusWainwright
11.30.15 | Ride the Lightning or Rust in Peace with current production techniques and a few modern musical tweaks would absolutely still slay the competition because the songs are so strong and the solos are so memorable, come on people |
Calc
11.30.15 | that wasn't the question. it wasn't if these albums had some tweaks and were released.. it was if these albums were released |
anarchistfish
11.30.15 | Many classic albums were progressive and novel in their sound and influenced much music released thereafter so the context would be different if they came out today and they probably wouldn't have the same legacy |
wham49
11.30.15 | of course they would, if released today many would be bigger "hits" because there is no competition today, releasing an album in the 70's you probably had 10 other very good albums released the same week, today it is not that way |
DoofusWainwright
11.30.15 | impossible scenario tbh, so these were left in a time capsule somewhere untouched for 30 or 40 years?
I still think they'd do ok, some nuts still highly rate current Megadeth albums and despite sounding 'old' the songs are still so much better on Rust in Peace.
People liked 'King of Limbs' and that was bog average so 'Ok Computer' would still totally destroy that quality of release.
I mean all I have to say is 'Drones'. That's the competition 'Ok Computer' would face. It would be a massacre. |
AnimalsAsSummit
11.30.15 | the real answer is who the hell knows plus they're all different albums |
basikchanL
11.30.15 | "some nuts still highly rate current Megadeth albums"
but only bc of the ~classics~
if megadeth was a new band nowadays everyone would be like lol tf are you
they suck either way though so it doesnt really matter... |
Calc
11.30.15 | "the real answer is who the hell knows plus they're all different albums"
that's also the non-committal boring answer AAS have an opinion dammit! |
Mort.
11.30.15 | this question has basically been discussed in 4s thread over the last week anyway |
frigyourgenre
11.30.15 | #2 might |
TheSonomaDude
11.30.15 | 6 would still riff harder than all fuck. I have a hard time thinking 6 would come out today and people would be like "cool, I guess". |
Valkyrion
11.30.15 | >some nuts still highly rate current Megadeth albums
perhaps the same guys who rated everything slayer post 1988 above a 3.0, if those bands didn't make important albums like that people would just pass them off as average bands, same goes with bands like radiohead (although I can't confirm their newest releases suck).
I think some of these albums would sound very dated in this age, especially Sabbath. |
TheSonomaDude
11.30.15 | Are y'all fucking shittin me? If RIP came out today there would be a ton of sputters saying it sucks. |
Valkyrion
11.30.15 | also you had to pick this many metal releases, those are likely to be appreciated by the metal crowd as "old school revival" or sth and probably be passed as above average to great records and albums like 6 would still make ripples in the community |
zakalwe
11.30.15 | course not. Everyone of these steamers is a hard 1.5 at best. Stuff that's knocking around now is tons better. |
evilford
11.30.15 | lol |
BeyondCosby
11.30.15 | I agree with those saying the albums have to do with the influence they brought to their genre. This doesn't mean they are bad albums, but part of the reason why they are so memorable is because they've been beaten into our heads.
I'm not saying any of these albums don't deserve to be classics, just that time and influence are great factors.
|
wham49
11.30.15 | Valk, Sabbath would not sound dated, many popular bands not only emulate their style, but sound production and most of all riffs and phrasing patterns, Look at the new Uncle Acid release, total rip off of Sabbath
also there is a push to get back to realistic sounding music, and getting away from a too perfect production with out any flaws. Look at all the new bands recording in analog, and releasing vinyl, for that certain sound |
HeckToPay
11.30.15 | stupid question tbh |
TheNotrap
12.02.15 | Would Mona Lisa hold up if painted today?
Would Hamlet hold up today?
Artistic expressions out of context have little meaning. |
guitarded_chuck
12.02.15 | i think the trash metal ones would cause there are still people trying to imitate them today |
