Every Staff Top 10 Ranked 2010-2022

Over the course of 2023, I went to extreme lengths to familiarize myself with the staff meta and listened to every album to ever make a top 10 staff list (in most cases multiple times). How mostly good or occasionally bad did the staff do? This is my ranking.
13Swans
The Seer

2012

1. Swans - The Seer
2. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - ‘Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!
3. The Tallest Man on Earth - There’s No Leaving Now
4. Killer Mike - R.A.P. Music
5. Andrew Bird - Break It Yourself
6. Converge - All We Love We Leave Behind
7. Jessie Ware - Devotion
8. Mount Eerie - Clear Moon
9. Deftones - Koi No Yokan
10. The Gaslight Anthem - Handwritten

This is the only list here I might legitimately argue has more bad albums than good. The Seer and There’s No Leaving Now are two of my least favorite albums of the 130 listed here. Not a fan of these Gaslight Anthem, Mount Eerie, or Andrew Bird albums either. Koi No Yokan was also once a favorite album of mine that has fallen by the wayside a bit for me over the years. RAP Music and the fourth best Converge album can only do so much.

12Kacey Musgraves
Golden Hour

2018

1. Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour
2. Daughters - You Won’t Get What You Want
3. Julia Holter - Aviary
4. Earl Sweatshirt - Some Rap Songs
5. Pusha T - Daytona
6. Coheed and Cambria - The Unheavenly Creatures
7. Tim Hecker - Konoyo
8. Alkaline Trio - Is This Thing Cursed?
9. Thou - Magus
10. Hop Along - Bark You Head Off, Dog

I'll be honest, this list would prob rank way higher if not for the Daughters drama, but I cannot imagine ever listening to an album like that ever again given what has come to light in recent years. Don't be fooled though, this list still includes albums that are trash on their own merit... most notably Coheed & Cambria. Earl, Push and Thou doing everything they can to prevent this from placing last.

11Mastodon
Hushed and Grim

2021

1. Mastodon - Hushed and Grim
2. The World Is a Beautiful Place - Illusory Walls
3. Every Time I Die - Radical
4. Injury Reserve - By the Time I Get to Phoenix
5. Converge - Bloodmoon: I
6. Musk Ox - Inheritance
7. Iosonouncane - IRA
8. Sweet Trip - A Tiny House, In Secret Speeches, Polar Equals
9. Julien Baker - Little Oblivions
10. The Killers - Pressure Machine

ETID, Injury Reserve, and (somehow) The Killers carry. This list gets unconventionality points for Musk Ox and Iosonouncane, even if neither of those work for me, but they are completely negated by Mastodon notching the top spot. Overall this list in plagued by bloated albums from sput legacy acts that are a chore to sit through.

10Kendrick Lamar
To Pimp a Butterfly

2015

1. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly
2. Sufjan Stevens - Carrie and Lowell
3. Grimes - Art Angels
4. Deer Hunter - Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise
5. Viet Cong (now Preoccupations) - Viet Cong
6. Julia Holter - Have You In My Wilderness
7. Sleater-Kinney - No Cities To Love
8. Jamie XX - In Colour
9. We Lost The Sea - Departure Songs
10. Dance Gavin Dance - Instant Gratification

Kendrick and Sufjan carry an otherwise pedestrian list here. We Lost the Sea, Jamie XX, and Julia Holter are worthy additions, and Preoccupations is a fun blast from the past. Not too keen to revisit anything else here.

9Bon Iver
Bon Iver, Bon Iver

2011

1. Bon Iver - Bon Iver, Bon Iver
2. James Blake - James Blake
3. M83 - Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming
4. Frank Turner - England Keep My Bones
5. Manchester Orchestra - Simple Math
6. Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues
7. Florence + The Machine - Ceremonials
8. Swarms - Old Raves End
9. Destroyer - Kaputt
10. Touche Amore - Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me

Very similar to the 2016 lists except the highs aren't nearly as high.

8David Bowie
Blackstar

2016

1. David Bowie - Blackstar
2. Thrice - To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere
3. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool
4. Angel Olsen - My Woman
5. Solange - A Seat at the Table
6. Ulcerate - Shrines of Paralysis
7. Vektor - Terminal Redux
8. Fates Warning - Theories of Flight
9. Cobalt - Slow Forever
10. The Dear Hunter - Act V: Hymns with the Devil in Confessional

An overall decent list that's weighed down by a bit too much sput legacy fodder (Thrice, Radiohead, Fates Warning, The Dear Hunter). The remainder are albums I pretty consistently return to, including three of the strongest metal releases in the last decade.

7Charli XCX
How I'm Feeling Now

2020

1. Charli XCX - How I’m Feeling Now
2. The Microphones - Microphones in 2020
3. Fiona Apple - Fetch the Bolt Cutters
4. Paradise Lost - Obsidian
5. Run the Jewels - RTJ4
6. Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher
7. Protest the Hero - Palimpsest
8. Jessica Ware - What’s Your Pleasure?
9. Paysage d’Hiver - Im Wald
10. Ichiko Aoba - Windswept Adan

Charli carries this list hard. Could really care less about the Obsidian, Palimpsest, Im Wald and The Mircrophones in 2020 but wouldn't call any of those albums bad by any means. The rest of the list is decent.

6The Tallest Man on Earth
The Wild Hunt

2010

1. The Tallest Man on Earth - The Wild Hunt
2. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
3. Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz
4. Titus Andronicus - The Monitor
5. The National - High Violet
6. Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
7. Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty
8. Janelle Monae - The ArchAndroid
9. Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest
10. Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me

Despite an absolute dreadful #1 and Titus Adronicus in the top 5, 2010 is certainly one of the better top 10s, with Cosmogramma, High Violet, and even MBDTF being likely top 100 albums of mine.

5Flying Lotus
You're Dead!

2014

1. Flying Lotus - You’re Dead!
2. The Hotelier - Home, Like NoPlace Is There
3. Sharon Van Etten - Are We There
4. Trophy Scars - Holy Vacants
5. The War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream
6. Dead Congregation - Promulgation of the Fall
7. Morbus Chron - Sweven
8. Kishi Bashi - Lighght
9. Caribou - Our Love
10. Against Me! - Transgender Dysphoria Blues

Yet another list that's pretty much all 4s, but is held back by Caribou and The War on Drugs.

4Laura Stevenson
The Big Freeze

2019

1. Laura Stevenson - The Big Freeze
2. Lana Del Rey - Norman Fucking Rockwell!
3. Big Thief - U.F.O.F.
4. Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Ghosteen
5. American Football - American Football (LP3)
6. State Faults - Clairvoyant
7. Purple Mountains - Purple Mountains
8. Cult of Luna - A Dawn to Fear
9. Jenny Hval - The Practice of Love
10. Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising

Another list of almost all 4s, with the exception being the snoozefest that is AF3.

3Julia Holter
Loud City Song

2013

1. Julia Holter - Loud City Song
2. Justin Timberlake - The 20/20 Experience
3. Deafheaven - Sunbather
4. Kayo Dot - Hubardo
5. Gorguts - Colored Sands
6. Okkervil River - The Silver Gymnasium
7. Queens of the Stone Age - …Like Clockwork
8. Laura Stevenson - Wheel
9. Obliteration - Black Death Horizon
10. Jenny Hval - Innocence is Kinky

I'd give every single one of these albums a 4. Amazingly consistent list.

2The National
Sleep Well Beast

2017

1. The National - Sleep Well Beast
2. Ulver - The Assassination of Julius Caesar
3. Kendrick Lamar - DAMN.
4. Manchester Orchestra - A Black Mile To The Surface
5. The Menzingers - After the Party
6. Blood Cultures - Happy Birthday
7. Lorde - Melodrama
8. Gang of Youths - Go Farther in Lightness
9. Pain of Salvation - In the Passing Light of Day
10. Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory

I think 2017 and 2013 are about the same level, but the edge goes to 2017 due to its soaring highs. DAMN. and Melodrama are absolutely two of my most favorite albums of all time at this point, and Big Fish Theory and Sleep Well Beast would prob make my top 100 as well. These four albums more than make up for the mid that is Pain of Salvation, Blood Cultures, and Ulver.

1Ethel Cain
Preacher's Daughter

2022

1. Ethel Cain - Preacher’s Daughter
2. Big Thief - Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You
3. Saya Gray - 19 MASTERS
4. Alvvays - Blue Rev
5. Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There
6. The Wonder Years - The Hum Goes On Forever
7. Chat Pile - God’s Country
8. City of Caterpillar - Mystic Sisters
9. Yeule - Glitch Princess
10. Rolo Tomassi - Where Myth Becomes Memory

Maybe recency bias but this collection of albums just barely edges out 2013 and 2017 to take the top spot. Rolo, CoP, and Chat Pile are all probably in my top 100 albums at this point, and the rest of the list consists of varying degrees of bangers. The only weak spot here is The Wonder Years, which I can take or leave.
