GodLovesUgly
06.30.22 | I honestly really wanted to put something from Lupe here, he's one of my favourite artists and is easily one of the greatest lyricists ever but I honestly couldn't think of an album from him that is pure perfection from front to back like the ones listed here. To be honest several Hip Hop artists that I love didn't even make the list but if I really was to put a Lupe album here it might have been Drogas Wave or maybe Food & Liquor. But if I ever do decide a Lupe album should actually be included I'll be sure to fix it, sorry to disappoint lol. |
MarsKid
06.30.22 | Don't worry my friend, just messin. I'm very picky with my hip-hop and rap, and Lupe just happens to be the one artist that consistently impresses me. I'm aware that consistency is often the issue talked about with regards to his work due to how he'll roll with his ambitions with absolutely 0 restraint. For me though, I think it leads to some stellar songwriting, in part because Lupe just does whatever he wants.
Drogas WAVE is probably my favorite project of his too. The storytelling, the lyrics, the delivery, the beat variety, the variance in moods. It's a massive beast to take in, yet he somehow manages to stick the landing.
I also adore Tetsuo & Youth and I'd say it's more consistent than it gets credit for honestly. |

06.30.22 | @ MarsKid Haha it was just so interesting that you mentioned him because I almost tried to justify putting something from him in the list but when I had all of the albums listed the number became to large and he just happened to get cut out. I definitely understanding being picky with it, I listen to as much different types of music as I can but Hip Hop is easily the genre I'm most familiar with so it was hard to make this list without feeling bad for leaving so many artists out. As an MC he fascinates me too especially these days, he's on another level really.
Who knows if I'd only listened to Drogas WAVE again recently I might have it on here but I've still only heard it once, it really blew me away though and your description for it is on point for sure.
I also love Tetsuo & Youth, it's a solid 4.5/5 for me. I think people think it's less consistent then it really is because after Mural they're caught off guard by how different the rest of it sounds but as far as subject matter goes as well as production it's definitely one of his best efforts front to back. |
GodLovesUgly
06.30.22 | Get low Nujabes would be on a Part 2 if I made one, have actually spun his work a lot but like many other artists I love there is just so much out there that it will always feel like some albums are left out. Maybe if I stuck to one album per artist I'd feel less guilty about who didn't make it but at the same time it would be cheating |
MarsKid
06.30.22 | Man I just noticed you got The Diary here. We all cool now lol. Prime Scarface had a voice as smoother as butter. |
GodLovesUgly
06.30.22 | Haha yea it would have been criminal to have left that out and I'm happy to see your a fan of Scarface as well. |
Shemson
06.30.22 | Nice one, this is just what I need right now.
Only recently got into hip hop properly so I’ve been digging out classics like last week was 36 Chambers for example.
Will use this for reference I think! |
parksungjoon
06.30.22 | anyway list needs ultramagnetic mcs most likely
and maybe lords of the underground or gift of gab |
GodLovesUgly
06.30.22 | @Shemson Nice, it's really awesome to know that you've been getting into Hip Hop and 36 Chambers is a classic for sure. I'm happy that you'll come back for some recommendations and definitely hope you find some more stuff you like! |
Get Low
06.30.22 | @GodLovesUgly You got Modal Soul 4.5'd so you are forgiven |
GodLovesUgly
06.30.22 | @parksungjoon I was actually listening to Critical Beatdown for the first time in a while as I was making the list and I do love it but at the same time can't really think of what I'd put it here instead of I also do prefer some of Keith's later stuff.
Lords of the underground would be in a Part 2 if I made one and Gift Of Gab is here through Blackalicious and 4th Dimensional Rocketships Going Up was definitely considered. |
GodLovesUgly
06.30.22 | @GetLow Metaphorical Music is a 4.5/5 as well! |
MarsKid
06.30.22 | I think my only other nitpick would be Oneiorology > Piece of Strange, but this is honestly a great list for anyone looking to do a deep dive. |
benkim
06.30.22 | Actually not a bad list although it is missing a few essentials. |
GodLovesUgly
06.30.22 | I can understand having Oneiorology over Piece of Strange, it might even be a bit of a bias from me since I've listened to Piece of Strange more times and also more recently but yea cheers I'm really glad you like the list. |
GodLovesUgly
06.30.22 | @benkim yea quite a few very iconic albums are left off for one reason or another but glad you like it overall. |
MarsKid
06.30.22 | The production and atmosphere on Oneiorology are some of the best I've heard across any genre, honestly. It's a beauty to behold. |
GodLovesUgly
06.30.22 | You're definitely inspiring me to give it another spin soon as it really has been a while but yes I do remember it being brilliantly atmospheric and masterfully produced. |
MarsKid
06.30.22 | Can't recommend it enough, it's a hell of a trip. |
GodLovesUgly
06.30.22 | Will make sure I listen to it in the next few days, I'm a big CunninLynguists fan in general but that's strangely the album I've come back to the least. |

06.30.22 | this has basically all my favorites (including my avatar, haha)
cool to see Aceyalone here as well. might have to go through and jam what I haven't heard because nothing but solid picks here |
GodLovesUgly
06.30.22 | Oh damn that's so awesome to see that we have such similar tastes in Hip Hop haha
Also yes really glad to see some Aceyalone love, he's one of the greatest and Freestyle Fellowship is quite overlooked. I definitely hope you get to some of the ones you haven't heard and thanks so much I'm really happy you like the list! |
StormChaser
06.30.22 | Midnight Marauders above Low End Theory is the right take, nice |
FadedSun
06.30.22 | It's a solid list for sure. Lots of stuff on here I still need to check out. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.30.22 | Pretty good list, covers most of the bases, not a lot of surprises but definitely a great selection of essentials here. I’ve got to say having all we got iz us over bacdafucup is pretty crazy tho |

06.30.22 | No 3 Feet High and Rising is surprising |
GhandhiLion
06.30.22 | Arrested Development is based tho |

06.30.22 | Where's 'Blicky Season' by Blicky Sosa? |
GodLovesUgly
06.30.22 | @ StormChaser It's in alphabetical so it's not purposely ranked above Low End Theory but at the same time I always did prefer Mindnight Marauders for sure! |
GodLovesUgly
06.30.22 | Thanks FadedSun, I hope you get to some of the ones you haven't heard soon and definitely hope you find some stuff you like. |
GodLovesUgly
06.30.22 | Thanks Lord(e)Po)))ts, yea I think theirs a bit of range here and surely several essentials. It's interesting because I always greatly preferred All We Got Iz Us, both are obviously incredible though and also cheers, I'm glad you like the list! |
GodLovesUgly
06.30.22 | @ GhandhiLion I always felt that De La Soul is Dead was so much better. |

06.30.22 | 💯 if I made a Part ll I’d definitely add bacdafucup |

06.30.22 | Public Enemy too low. No EPMD or NWA - Must not have lived late 80’s hip hop. Also, no Jurassic 5 or Biggie? |
GodLovesUgly
07.01.22 | It’s in alphabetical order, PE would be high otherwise. Big fan of EPMD but don’t really think that even Strictly Business can replace anything here. I always found Straight Outta Compton to be one of the most important but not exactly one of the most perfect Hip Hop albums, really don’t like the last track and Ready To Die is here. Also Jurassic 5 never made anything classic imo, really fun to listen to but not revolutionary or anything, interesting pick. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.01.22 | Jurassic 5 is goofy af, can’t stand Chali 2na |
GodLovesUgly
07.01.22 | Yea I was surprised they were mentioned here as if they are essential lol, always felt pretty average compared to many Hip Hop groups. |
Kompys2000
07.01.22 | Lot of classics here obv but tribe is MEDIOCRE and ought to be booted to make room for more stuff from the 2010s |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.01.22 | Kompy, I love you to bits but that is the most blatantly offensive thing you’ve ever said and it’s going to take a toll on our friendship |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.01.22 | Hey godlovesugly have you peeped / are you aware of Horror City - 90s Hood Classics yet? |
Kompys2000
07.01.22 | @pots More or less blatantly offensive than Georgie Porgie
Just to get a sense of what territory I'm in here |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.01.22 | That’s such a bewilderingly strange metric to even attempt to equate to that I think you honestly may have just broken my brain |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.01.22 | I’m not even mad anyMore |
GodLovesUgly
07.01.22 | @ Kompys2000 I clearly don't agree that trine if mediocre and I cant think of anything from the 2010s that isn't already here that really should be |
GodLovesUgly
07.01.22 | Hey Lord(e)Po)))ts that's not something I was aware of but it sounds interesting so I'll be sure to check it out soon, cheers for the recommendation. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.01.22 | If you’ve heard a prince among thieves by prince paul you’ll recognize some of the beats, 90s hood classics has a few of them in their original form |
SharkTooth
07.01.22 | my definition of 'greatest' mainly relates to its importance in hip hop history, so I would've put nwa, the chronic, and flockavelli
not necessarily out of quality, but due to cultural impact
for that same reason while I appreciate the inclusion of Masta Ace, I don't recall any of his singular albums having too much of a cultural impact |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.01.22 | Did you just type “flockavelli” in the same post as Masta ace nwa and Dre |
SharkTooth
07.01.22 | Flockavelli is responsible for the explosion of trap music, so it is culturally significant enough to warrant a mention imo. I don't like the album, but the splash it made would warrant it being on a "greatest" list regardless of quality
if I was talking about a "best hip hop albums" list, I wouldn't mention it |
VlacDrac
07.01.22 | Funny how Flockavelli aged like milk. |
SharkTooth
07.01.22 | all I can think of when listening to it is mlg montage parodies with all the airhorns |
MrSirLordGentleman
07.01.22 | as long as tribe called quest is that high on the list
everything's fine
lots of cool stuff on this list |
SharkTooth
07.01.22 | yea all the albums here are excellent choices
I would've included also Geto Boys and KRS-One, but that just goes to show hip-hop's a big genre |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.01.22 | Being influential doesn’t mean much If what you influenced was a dog doodoo |
SharkTooth
07.01.22 | if only there wasn't so much 'dog doodoo' |
VlacDrac
07.01.22 | @SharkTooth agreed, it truly is a product of its time, the same can be said by a lot of Hip-Hop that was released the last decade. I think that's one of the main problems of Hip-Hop as a whole, it's a genre that ages really fast compared to other types of music, not that it's always a bad thing, but you can clearly tell when something was released in 2010 im this case Flockavelli compared to something that came out in 2018 like Die Lit. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.01.22 | “The top 100 most culturally significant albums of the worst part of hip hop history” |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.01.22 | Truly a list I hope never sees the light of day |
GodLovesUgly
07.01.22 | I absolutely love Prince Among Thieves and was actually just giving it another spin the other day, definitely next level production. |
GodLovesUgly
07.01.22 | Sharktooth I do understand that criteria although it’s not one I use, so many of the most influential Hip Hop albums have been greatly surpassed especially so much of the 80s stuff. So for me it’s really about what the most impressive albums are front to back, if it was an important or essential albums list it would look much different and in my opinion much more boring. I also really want people that are looking for some new stuff to check out be introduced to Hip Hop of the highest quality, I also re-listened to many iconic albums before making this and found that not everything held up so well regardless of how influential and heavily sampled certain albums are. That’s awesome to see some appreciation for Masta Ace as he’s very overlooked for someone so consistent, he brings such great personality through and those three albums are honestly about perfect to me. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.01.22 | You are going to be a very happy lad then. It’s a weird release with virtually no readily available information and no physical release whatsoever as far as I can tell but it seems to be a compilation of released and unreleased songs prince paul did under that group name in the 90s and it’s easily amongst his best work |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.01.22 | Speaking of Masta Ace, have you heard this? https://youtu.be/a2pzmty3LVs
One of my top 5 hip hop tracks of all time |
GodLovesUgly
07.01.22 | Oh and I have to admit that I’ve never heard Flocavelli and never intended to, interesting. I know you shouldn’t knock it to you try it but the little I heard from him made him seem wack as fuck lol but I do admit to needing to explore more of the trap guys and stuff. |
GodLovesUgly
07.01.22 | Yes those two Tribe albums are sheer perfection, I’m not even lying but today was the first time I ever came across someone who didn’t like tribe lol. Thanks really glad you’re a fan of the list MrSir! |
GodLovesUgly
07.01.22 | Geto Boys probably could have almost made it, at least as arcade did I guess😔. I was listening to my BDP and KRS Cassettes and Cds when I was organising the list and honestly didn’t think any of them quite reached above anything here, don’t get my wrong though I’m a huge fan. |
GodLovesUgly
07.01.22 | Yes a list with such a criteria is not something I’m interested in either, Hip Hop has progressed so much over time that some of the most influential albums just simply don’t represent the genre at its most inventive, obviously there are exceptions which feature here but I didn’t feel the need to overdo it with mainly 80s and 90s shit. |
GodLovesUgly
07.01.22 | Yea looking the album up made me even more intrigued and it’s pretty awesome how a bunch of unreleased stuff can sometimes result in a great project. |
VlacDrac
07.01.22 | Who produced the instrumentals in "The Tas of Rain...", musically it kind of reminds me of cLOUDEAD (I know Doseone raps on both projects) and a bit "Gun Hill Road" by The Infesticons as well. |
GodLovesUgly
07.01.22 | @Pots yea for sure man, incredible track and definitely an understandable pick for a Top 5 Hip Hop song |
GodLovesUgly
07.01.22 | @VlacDrac It was a mix of Jel, DJ Mayonnaise, Alia, DJ Abilities and Ant so a mixture of Anticon and Rhymesayers producers. Yea it's similar musically to cLouDEAD which is an Anticon project as well, both incredible albums. |
SharkTooth
07.01.22 | “The top 100 most culturally significant albums of the worst part of hip hop history”
idk man with a title like that I think such a list would be hilarious |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.01.22 | Granted |
GodLovesUgly
07.01.22 | Well now that you word it that way it could work |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.01.22 | You just know chief queef would be on it |
GodLovesUgly
07.01.22 | Oh without a doubt |
Titan
07.01.22 | No Strictly Business? |
GodLovesUgly
07.02.22 | That was so close to making it, I’ll give it another spin soon and see if I reconsider. I always found it one of the best 80s albums, so brilliantly unique and with next level production. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.02.22 | Always personal, never business |

dakotadsmith
07.04.22 | Also, I see you got Illmatic and Elmatic so peep An Ode to Reasonable Doubt from Skyzoo |
notagenius
07.05.22 | it is a very good list. covering the important records. For my own taste, I would definitely remember to add Master P's Ghetto D, I enjoyed that record so much. And the first two from EPMD and Slick Rick's Storytelling |
Emim
07.05.22 | "Lot of classics here obv but tribe is MEDIOCRE and ought to be booted to make room for more stuff from the 2010s"
Lol wtf |
GodLovesUgly
07.05.22 | dakotadsmith I'll check all of those out for sure, cheers for the recommendations! |
GodLovesUgly
07.05.22 | Oh and yea I will I remember hearing about that Skyzoo project but I guess it sort of just slipped right by me although I remember being interested when it came out. |
GodLovesUgly
07.05.22 | notagenius I have to be honest and say that I haven't heard any album from Master P before, I think I kinda just skipped the No Limit scene really just due to what else there was to listen to but I should definitely change that. EPMD might have just missed the boat due to me not listening to them for a while and I've always loved Slick Rick but at the same time didn't think of him when making this list, absolute true original artist though. |
GodLovesUgly
07.05.22 | Emim that was honestly a comment I never saw coming, I know it's all subjective and everyone's entitled to their opinion but it always seemed like Tribe was a group everyone who liked Hip Hop loved. If anyone was gonna get hate on this list they were definitely one of the last acts I could have predicted. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.05.22 | Tribe is a group even people who don’t like hip hop love |
GodLovesUgly
07.05.22 | That's exactly what I was thinking, definitely a group I'd show to people who don't usually dig the genre. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.05.22 | I missed that you had dynospectrum on here. That is far and away the best thing slug has ever been a part of imo |
Drifter
07.05.22 | needs BONE |
GodLovesUgly
07.05.22 | Oh yea Dynospectrum is next-level and an understandable choice for the best think Slugs been a part of as it really just is great front to back. |
GodLovesUgly
07.05.22 | Drifter E. 1999 Eternal is pretty great but so is everything on this list so it pretty much just comes down to that, a Part ll would make up for so much of what I left out but I don't know if I'll do one or not. |
gg901goody
11.03.22 | Good album choices but strange order, Canibus at 20 and Notorious B.I.G. at 93 is one example |
