Doof's List of a Thousand 3.5 Ratings

Or How I Learned to Love the 3.5 and Not Hate that I Didn't Reach a Thousand 0.5 Ratings First

The way this list works is I go down the Sput chart for each year and see how quickly I reach a 3.5 Doof rating - then that is my 'score' of how elite a Sput user I was that year, the lower the number the better naturally.
2Brandi Carlile
By the Way, I Forgive You

2018 [44]

Early days, but I pocket an impressive 44 for this mildly dismissive rating of the country stalwart.
The Tower

2017 [43]

I go one better in 2017 with this typical Motorpsycho 3.5 (pretty sure all 50 of their albums are 3.5's) - the fact this album is so high on the chart makes me worry 2017 was a sh't tier year, gotta be honest with you.
4Cult of Luna and Julie Christmas

2016 [17]

What a result! Out the park! This growly meister-3.5 scores BIG
Sorni Nai

2015 [21]

Another high scorer, I enjoyed Korn going for something slightly different but I'm not sure the post rock flavour suited Jonathan Davis.
6Low Roar

2014 [94]

Low roar...and a low score. I was worried for a minute.
7Nils Frahm

2013 [38]

Controversial, a 'very close to a 4' 3.5 is a real thing but deserves equal treatment. Steady scoring.
8Foreign Fields
Anywhere But Where I Am

2012 [07]

Getting closer to that home run I can almost taste it...
9Danny Brown

2011 [46]

Disappointing showing, luckily I took a .5 off this release due to font used on the cover art.
Diamond Eyes

2010 [23]

Obviously one of the golden rules of Sput is only sh't tier users rate any Deftones above a 3.5, here I keep to the path...but only just.
Hymn to the Immortal Wind

2009 [69]

Soixante-neuf points thanks to me docking this album a .5 for stealing the greatest ever Spinal Tap album title.
Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill

2008 [94]

Almost calamity, thank the lord for Grouper killing one of earth's blessed creatures which caused me to strip a whole point off my rating.
13Nick Cave and Warren Ellis
The Assasination of Jesse James

2007 [12]

Rating soundtracks 3.5 is like shooting Jesse's in a brand new barrel, y'all made it too easy this year
14Clint Mansell, Kronos Quartet and Mogwai
The Fountain

2006 [4]

What did I say? This was close to a damn home run wtf
The Moon Is a Dead World

2005 [1]

I warned you. You can't say I didn't warn you...ding, ding, ding, jackpot. Some exemplary 3.5'ing from Doof. Where do we go from here?

2004 [1]

You kidding me

2003 [22]

Doof don't smoke no more so this was inevitable you fools.
18Pain of Salvation
Remedy Lane

2002 [10]

'progressive metal', 'progressive rock', 'experimental' - you can have one but not all three, this was so mind blowing it shot through the 5 rating and all the way back up from 0 to a 3.5. Sadly I can't rate it an 8.5 so it has to keep the 3.5.
Blackwater Park

2001 [1]

You gone done derped again.
20At the Drive-In
Relationship of Command

2000 [6]

This album has lived with me for years and years but every decade lived brings it down a .5 - that is the curse of the Drive-by
21Matthew Good Band
Beautiful Midnight

1999 [24]

We're into the '90s and....relax. Things can't go as bad from hereon out - although you damn well gave it a good shot with this.

1998 [5]

The West Coast 3.5 rating ceiling claims its first victim.

1997 [6]

If I could choose just one album to represent THE ULTIMATE 3.5 album - it would be something else. But this would be the second most ultimate 3.5.
Through Silver in Blood

1996 [4]

Oh man, this is like the ultimate 3.5 band though right? No, Deftones. Then Neurosis.

1995 [13]

Album doubles up as an ashtray which helped this Anselmo effort gobble up an extra .5 on the score. Scoring way higher in the '90s than expected, this is happy hunting.
26Acid Bath
When the Kite String Pops

1994 [30]

A great showing from my favourite year for music.

1993 [10]

Just when you think you're safe a sput 3.5 behemoth rises from the deep.
28Current 93
Thunder Perfect Mind

1992 [10]

C'mon it's no 'First Utterance'. Given me way too many '90s points.

1991 [13]

Unlucky 13, I thought you had me here but no.
Slowdive (1990)

1990 [38]

Not so many albums rated from this year...but here's an EP to save the day. Slowdive are my saviours.
Purple Rain

The 80s [18]

Even from beyond the grave Prince is ruining your day.
32Black Sabbath

The 70s [5]

Yikes, the unintelligible Brummy and his long hairs nearly cause the mutha of all screw ups. A close shave.
33The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Electric Ladyland

The 60s [12]

Ah yeah
