My favourite character, log lady aside, was Coop and I felt like the whole Dougie thing was awful! It was fun for a few episodes but he basically spent the whole series as a shell and it dragged.
IMO the series could’ve been about ten episodes and told the story it needed to tell (and didn’t even finish telling properly anyway!) and it would’ve been much better.
I’m being over the top saying I hated it because there were some bits I loved and when Coop finally came back I was grinning ear to ear but it was a disappointment to me.
Also disagree it’s similar to FWWM as I loved that, might be my favourite TP related thing, awesome and so dark. |

01.15.21 | Dougie was a complete mess and a total waste of Kyle’s talents for like 12 episodes! For me, my ‘The Return’ hype was seeingk Kyle be Coop giving thumbs up and being damn cool again. Only got like four episodes of that!
You think the story ended? Effectively it just picked them up and put them in a different timeline so he somewhat saved her from the ‘real’ world but only in a sense that she’s no longer there. The world they appeared in seems more sinister than the original world so if anything it was a cliff hanger |
rifkadm
01.15.21 | The intro tune to Bojack along with the visual sequence |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.15.21 | dougie was great and the gratification of coop finally coming back near the end was amazing
and lol no it wasnt a cliff hanger. coop and diane lured the mother into an alternate dimension/timeline created by saving laura in their timeline and then martyred themselves using an untainted "laura" essentially as a nuclear bomb of goodness and purity ignited by being reunited with the mother and having the events of her alternate timeline flood her all at once. the end of the show is literally the alternate reality imploding and everyone in it dying/ceasing to exist. coop and diane literally saved their timeline from evil. it could not possibly be any more finite. the mother is dead, bob is dead, coop is dead, diane is dead, laura is dead.
it was the plan the entire time, as detailed to coop in the red room by laura and the giant themselves |

01.15.21 | every second of dougie was a warm fuzzy blanket of goodness |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.15.21 | and saying it was a waste of his talents when he is simeutaneously playing booper and later real cooper and also later richard (alt timeline coop), totalling 4 "different" characters is lol. if anything it just showcased his versatility as an actor. |
Shemson
01.15.21 | Alright man, I did not get that from watching it once a week for 20 or so weeks, fair play to you! I think that one episode a week was probably part of the frustration with Dougie tbh, it took months to finally see Coop being Coop. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.15.21 | i get the frustration of not seeing real coop for so long and eventually almost giving up hope on him but i think that loss of hope helped make his eventual arrival that much more gratifying. it gets better on repeat views and starts to make more sense... eventually
like i said earlier ive watched it 4 or 5 times tho and it took me multiple to really start making any sense of it, especially the ending.
i feel very strongly about it, it's my favourite season of tv ever made |
Shemson
01.15.21 | I’ll concede, I might not have given it enough attention as a series but I wanted a ‘return’ rather than ‘The Return’ I suppose |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.15.21 | watching it on a week by week basis instead of being able to binge made it particularly hard to digest and make sense of on first viewing for sure. and it definitely made me frustrated and impatient at times, but i think a big part of lynch's talent is making you uncomfortable/frustrated/confused af |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.15.21 | every time ive rewatched i've picked up just a little bit more detail, like realizing that the weird wildly uncomfortable and passionless sex scene between cooper/richard and diane/linda was so disconcerting and strange because they are both slowly becoming different people and that they had planned to use this act of sex as a ritual to draw the mother into the alternate timeline (diane having to have sex with the host body of her rapist is big irresistible garmonbozia). |
Shemson
01.15.21 | Maybe one day I’ll give it another chance when I have proper time and focus on the important bits skipping stuff like the random rent-a-band features at the bar and why the hell Audrey was married to the little guy which seemed irrelevant by the end as well |

the final scene with her where things get weird and then she wakes up in a white room is her waking up from her coma finally |

01.15.21 | On topic -
Bojack is a good shout but weirdly the credits song ‘back in the 90s etc.’ is actually a better song so I’m not sure!
Fresh Prince is iconic... I’ll consider it.
Buffy was badass when I was young and I’ve definitely watched it multiple times as an adult... maybe, though the Angel theme might be better for a darker take on the same mythology |
rifkadm
01.15.21 | Oh yeah the closing theme for bojack is better but the intro still gets me hyped about the episode a lot |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.15.21 | i'm actually a bit hazy on the audrey stuff, i think im mistaken that she stayed in a coma but rather that by the time of the show she has in fact awakened and is actually stuck in a mental hospital after a severe psychotic break largely due to what happened with booper and her son. my original interpretation was that she was still in a coma and was having precognitions but after a little refresher i'm remembering now:
the guy she was trying to find (billy) was the guy who went missing irl after being questioned by andy about his truck (the one richard hit the kid with). the same dude who later turned up in tina's house all fucked up bleeding out his face (they were dating). she had an affair with him before she lost her mind, which is how richard is connected to him to begin with (richard is the product of booper raping audrey while she was still in a coma). so she is connected to richard, booper, and billy and her mental break is due to the trauma caused by booper. i couldn't tell you how much of her interactions with the little hubbie are real and what is in her mind but she is scared richard killed billy or something. also, the shit with audrey and the scenes in the diner where the guy comes looking for billy reveals that the timeline in the show is not necessarily chronological. a doppelganger can't exist in the world at the same time as their real self so when booper cheats the system but fails (twice) to prevent cooper from entering the dougie husk it starts to tear holes in the fabric of reality and from that point foreward time starts to get real wonky on the show. but final digression aside, it seems pretty relevant to me. |
Shemson
01.15.21 | I’m definitely not someone that likes his storylines spoon fed and neatly wrapped up but yeah I don’t remember getting any of that lol

aydross121
01.16.21 | "the final scene with her where things get weird and then she wakes up in a white room is her waking up from her coma finally"
I really like the idea of, when she wakes up, it's the actual actress that does so. As in the actual real life Sherilyn Fenn.
It was even mentioned in the newest redlettermedia review of the series. It also really fits in with the meta-narrative of the whole detective/soap show being aware it's a show.
|
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.16.21 | hmm
that doesn't sit well with me tbh. seems like a big stretch. twin peaks is pretty submersed in its own lore, i don't see any point in breaking the fourth wall in such an obtuse manner that makes any sense to the narrative, and it doesnt feel very characteristic of Twin Peaks either. |
aydross121
01.16.21 | Well that specific example is kinda surface level I'd agree, but there is a decent case to be made about the whole show and its themes slowly slipping into real life.
Take for example, the last scene of the movie. The owner of the house where Laura used to live is the actual real person that lives there. Lynch asked her if she could be in the movie.
Not saying this is the real meaning of the show, but there definetely seems to be something 4th wall breaking going on at least. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts

this thematically makes more sense because the "slipping into real life" angle can be reconciled with the fact that this just happens to be the nature of the alternate timeline. i doubt his intent was "this alternate timeline is real life" as much as it was just "this alternate timeline is different". like his take on separate realities is unique in that characters have very little connective fibre and the logistics of this are beyond human comprehension. like not only do the characters have entirely different names and lives but their personalities are different or they are just entirely different people inhabiting the same spaces (in the case of the woman he used at the house) |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.16.21 | also coop asks the lady what her name is and the family name is the name of the family that the gorgonzola granny and magician kid from the show and movie bought the their house from iirc. or something like that. i don't remember exactly the connection but i know for a fact there is a direct reference between that ladies family name and the lore behind the gorgonzola granny and magician boy (who is likely the child version of the dude shelly is dating in the return). and we don't even know what year that alt timeline is in either so it could be a different generation entirely of that fam. i think it's most likely that lynch just liked the lady and she fit the bill for the role he envisioned of her. he's known for impulsively hiring rando's on the spot or just based off their face. i'm sure you know how bob was cast |
Rowan5215
01.16.21 | yea real life lady says she bought the house off the Tremonds which is the name little magic kid and his granny use in S2 when Donna meets them
in FWWM Carl says they called themselves the Chalfonts but also that that was the name of the family who lived in the trailer park before them. so there's a hint that they just go around taking human's names and houses or something. do with all that what you will |
Lord(e)Po)))ts

01.16.21 | lol |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.16.21 | just looked into it for clarification and there's actually even more to it than what you said rowan. i remembered correctly that the woman had one of the surnames. her name is Alice Tremond and she says she purchased the house off of Mrs. Chalfont. Mrs. Tremond (as she appears in the trailer park and in twin peaks in fwwm and the og series) is one and the same as Mrs. Chalfont. In the show she identifies as the former and the movie as the latter. There is also a different Mrs. Tremond later when Donna goes back. So there are three "different" Mrs. Tremonds. |

She's not in a coma at that point she's just having a psychotic break. I looked it up after all this talk and its been confirmed by frost in extra material.
This just seems like a pretty quintessentially lynchian moment and a pretty weak argument for the "our world is seeping into twin peaks world" theory seeing as it is basically the only example of mildly breaking the fourth wall ive heard so far that can't be explained away
