[R2] Build-An-Album³: Out With Old, In With New

It's time.

Echospace [Detroit] Presents: "Altering Illusions"

Hello Build-an-Albumaneers! Welcome to Round 2. You all survived an especially gruelling first round intact and with some points on the board. We’ll get to those in a second.
2Fluxion
Vibrant Forms II

Round 1 was by and large a very successful one, and the standard was high. However, growing pains proved to be an issue with numerous violations of the restrictions. Tut tut. However I prefer to add points rather than take them away, so to offset this, bonus points have been added and will persist through Phase 1, they are as follows:
3Moa Pillar
humanity

No rule breaks/violations - +2 points
A couple of minor violations - +1 points
A few or more violations - +0 points
4Vatican Shadow
Remember Your Black Day

Having also reviewed some of the rules, going forth I will no longer enforce the rule against using releases I have rated unless I have 5d it or otherwise specified, i will try and port over my RYM 5s before the deadline to make this easier for you to not have to look over two places. The previous rule still counts though for your Round 1 submissions. Speaking of, let’s see how you all did!

Pangea’s album

Summary:
Not a bad first round! This one comfortably met the brief, and maintained a clear direction throughout, honing in on a more hypnotic feel. Loved the 1-2 punch of the electro opener leading into the cracking dub techno banger that was Horizon. Tailed off a little in terms of vibe with tracks 3 and 4, which whilst competent seemed to settle for a more background affair, but finished in good fashion with a great atmospheric cut from Vril, which added some much appreciated air to what was on offer, at the very slight expense of tighter sequencing.

Highlight: Pugilist - Horizon [4.1]

Tracks: 3.7/5
Flow: 3.6/5
Did it meet requirements: Yes [+2.0]

Score: 9.3

ffs’ album

Summary:
Now this is the hard-hitting stuff. Very much played to my taste in techno with the pummeling industrial percussion and occasional trancey leads. Lovely consistent (and constant) flow with little space to breathe (this is in fact a good thing). Great pull with dropping anything on the VOAM label as that’s absolutely my shit, Tzusing and VTSS were both bangers too. The only slight misstep here was the Giant Swan track - it’s not a bad track (although outshined by everything around it), but I do in fact have the EP it comes from rated on RYM unfortunately. Not to worry though, because everything else was bang tidy.

Highlight: Tzusing - 日出東方 唯我不敗 [4.1]

Tracks: 3.9/5
Flow: 4.0/5
Did it meet requirements: Mostly [+1.0]

Score: 8.9

anat’s album

Summary:
A really good selection of tracks here, but unfortunately track 2 (whilst incredibly good) is a bit too much in house territory for it to be straight techno, which is a shame because the other three range from great to excellent examples of heavy mid-90s style/nostalgia. Track 2 also ended up being a sticking point in terms of flow, as the groovy jazzy feel felt a little out of place sandwiched between two more mechanical cuts. Had it been an intro or outro I think it might have been a bit tighter. The whole thing is still really good though.

Highlight: Polygon Window - Quoth [4.0]

Tracks: 3.8/5
Flow: 3.5/5
Did it meet requirements: Mostly [+1.0]

Score: 8.3

Zac124’s album

Summary:
Wow, what a tour-de-force for old school Detroit sounds this is! Fantastic individual tracks including an incredibly hypnotic Galaxy 2 Galaxy cut, and an even better flow. Has everything you’ll ever need out of techno; lovely little melodies, pumping percussion, woozy euphoric atmosphere, ebb and flow, everything. Really a wonderful journey from start to finish. I do have to acknowledge however that Track 2 is actually by the artist Planetary which is a Dan Curtin alias - for some reason it’s just uploaded the whole mix on Spotify as just Dan Curtin, but I won’t class that as a rule break as it’s pretty reasonable given the official upload is tagged incorrectly. Track 4 has a little housiness to it but it’s techno enough that I’ll overlook it - this is too good to be marked down on very slight technicalities. Fantastic submission, good job!.

Highlight: Galaxy 2 Galaxy - Star Sailing [4.7]

Tracks: 4.2/5
Flow: 4.3/5
Did it meet requirements: Yes [+2.0]

9Giant Swan
Giant Swan

JohnnyoftheWell’s album

Summary: Excellent foray into the glitchier, and then harder/industrial side of techno. Great opener going for the more ambient feel, and 6666 is an absolute barnstormer pummeling you from every direction. The Giant Swan track was a solid choice too, doing the best job it could to maintain the energy after a massive highlight. The flow here was excellent as I expected from Johnny. The two minor slights I have were the second track, which whilst interesting perhaps sacrificed a little too much energy in search of glitch godliness to sit quite as well with the tracks around it, and the final track, which by all means is a banger but I do have that EP rated on RYM. An expectedly great submission as a whole.

Highlight: HAAi - 6666 [4.5]

anode’s album

Summary: Very solid selection of big names here - you can’t go wrong with the classics. The Plastikman track was an inspired choice, I was surprised not to see more Richie Hawtin material across other submissions, but that just means it’s a bigger draw here. Both LFO and Clark maintain a really pleasant vibe - good job on picking one of Clark’s more techno-coded cuts as that could have been a slip-up. The only real weak link here is the final track - definitely not what I would consider to be a top draw on Lunatic Harness, although many others I guess wouldn’t particularly fit the techno mould whereas this does just enough. Flow is very good. Overall, a great effort.

Highlight: Plastikman - Fuk [4.2]

neekafat’s album

Summary: Starts off incredibly good with the 1-2 punch of Orbital and (yet another) G2G banger, but loses a little bit of momentum later on. The flow is solid, and I do like how varied it is as a whole but maybe just needed a powerhouse finisher. A couple of these stray a bit away from Techno (Track 3 mostly) into Tech House, but other than that a decent effort.

Highlight: Orbital - Lush 3-1 [4.4]

FowlKrietzsche’s album

Summary: Mixed bag this one, starts off fairly strong with a decent enough trancey peak time techno cut that carries a lot of energy if lacking in a little soul, but starts to taper off afterwards. Not particularly because the individual tracks are bad mind (although the Timo Maas track did very little for me), but other than the opener the tracks range from debatably techno (Nightshifts), to tech house (Azamutha), to decidedly not techno (Shining Through). What did save you though is that the flow here is really solid with a keen ear for transitions and a good pace throughout. The non-technoish elements prevent me from giving any bonus points, but honestly assuming this is not a genre you’re familiar with, the fact you got a really solid flow bodes well for you in future rounds.

ReefaJones’ album

Summary: Fantastic submission here, love how much electro dominates here, and such a brilliant flow across the whole thing too, culminating in an amazing closer. Struggle actually to give any feedback beyond the fact this is just really good, maybe the Morphology track was a little by-the-numbers for me? Whatever, I loved this.

SlothcoreSam’s album

Summary: Pounding new-school industrial techno is on the menu and oh my lord we are eating. Four no-filler bangers leave this submission as one of the most consistent entered, both in track quality and in the natural flow. Your one slight miscue? The Rigid Remix is by all means one of my favourite techno tracks of all time, but that does mean I do already have that one rated on RYM. This pains me greatly because otherwise this was immense. It still is anyway.

Highlight: Giant Swan - Pax Britannica [4.2]

Kioku

PitchforkArms’ album

Summary: I can honestly say I didn’t expect this from you - in what I assume to be a weaker genre for your tastes, this ended up having one of the best tracks I’ve heard in ages in it. Right in the middle, sandwiched between a dark experimental piece and an industrial banger, Kioku is an entrancing, heavy as all hell psychedelic whirlwind that completely blew my socks off. Really, tracks 2-4 are so so strong, that it’s a shame that the opener and closer both are decidedly un-techno, and also don’t seem to particularly flow very well with the peak moments around them. The closer is a really cool track, but it’s not close to being techno, sorry. But whilst these may be moderate issues, they’re more than offset by the best parts of this.

Highlight: Wata Igarashi - Kioku [4.8]

Uzumaki’s album

Summary: Started off slow and rather boring I must say, but this really builds into something nice. Flow is excellent between tracks, and the payoff in the final two going from hard techno to a more UK bass-ish track is excellent. Would have liked to have that energy all the way through of course, which is where it drops some points, but a valiant effort.

Kompys2000’s album

Summary: A very ambient submission. A little too ambient at times for me, moving a little too slowly and lacking the percussion that makes techno, uh, techno-ey. Having said that, the flow is great here, and the tracks themselves are not too shabby on their own, the LFO cut especially was a good time. Having said that, there are a couple of small flaws here - the closer uncomfortably straddles the line between ambient techno and pure ambient, which I have overlooked for how well it rounds everything off. A more concrete one however is that I have that Orbital album 5’d. Sorry! Everything else is solid.

Highlight: LFO - Ultra Schall [4.0]

Squiggly’s album

Summary: Removed from the contextual requirements of submissions this would usually be a pretty decent mix, there’s definitely a through line between each track here, although some are stronger than others. The tracks themselves I’m split on - on the one hand, you have a really nice Jaar deep cut I hadn’t actually heard which whilst unorthodox ended up being my favourite thing here, can’t go wrong with Andy Stott either even if it’s one of the less memorable cuts off Luxury Problems. The middle section however was a fair bit outside the realms of techno and more straight house at times, not a big fan of the Hot Chip remix even outside of the fact it doesn’t really count. Still, there are good elements on display here, and I like that these selections are a little more off the beaten path than some other playlists.

Highlight: Nicolas Jaar - Club Kapital [3.9]

MarsKid’s album

Summary: A masterpiece in consistent vibe/atmosphere, this one managed to take a more ambient route that I personally feel less attached to (although I still like a lot of it), and turn it into a really solid experience. Spacey, deep and a bit trancey on the closer - this covers a lot of ground in a way that was thematically cohesive and still maintained its energy throughout. Marks for improvement? The ASC track was my favourite thing here, but 12 minutes was a bit pushing it, at least past the ten minute mark - something a little smaller would have given you a little wiggle room to squeeze another banger in there. The experience of being on the other side seems to have counted for something.

Jash’ album

Summary: An exquisite model of how to score high in this tournament. Consistent atmosphere that flows effortlessly (and i mean effffoorrrtttlessssllyyy) from one track to the next but with the keen eye to throw in something a bit different (Track 3) to refresh the vibe in case of monotony. Hard beats everywhere here - honestly not my favourite selection of tracks, but the flow is so so good it raises everything around it. Nothing really to add, this was just fucking great.

bellovddd’s album

Summary: Oh man, I really like the idea behind this. As far as I can tell, these are all Aussie artists (all Melbourne even maybe) which is exactly the kind of random side challenge I would set myself in previous tournaments. As much as I like the idea though, this is a mixed bag overall. The DJ HMC track is pretty banging, and works well, however the second two tracks are house rather than techno, and you were the only one to actually break one of the base restrictions (sorry) - your playlist was not 20 minutes long! Now is probably the best time to make a mistake honestly, so keep up and hopefully next round will be more attuned to your tastes.

Shemson’s album

Summary: A solid enough selection until the last two tracks. Definitely shows its best hand straight away with a really nice trancey peak time techno cut - a style that is usually fairly bankrupt in terms of soul, as shown by the next two which pound on in a predictable corporate-approved Berghain kinda way, but the flow of the first three tracks is solid. Not sure why the final two tracks are here though - both are awesome nostalgia (Bloc Party), or at least decent uplifting trance (Alpha 9), but neither is techno at all and they don’t add much to the flow. Intro saves this one a fair bit.

tyman128’s album

Summary: Another Galaxy 2 Galaxy track? Did you guys all look in the same place? Not that I’m complaining, these are all really good… oh wait. Unfortunately another victim has appeared of the Galaxy 2 Galaxy house track curse. Luckily, everything else here was safe, and by safe I mean it was fine and flowed well. The closer is good stuff if a little too one-dimensional past the 5 minute mark, which could also be said of the two preceding tracks to a greater scale - the second track especially is a bit too dull even for me. However the flow past the first track was solid, and you clawed back a decent payoff at the end.

GENRE

NEW WAVE

We’re not talking about no old wave here, this that NEW WAVE! I’m ready for some absolute bops here tbh so you guys better show up.
30Blondie
Parallel Lines

CONSTRAINTS

Your playlist must be 8 TRACKS long. Why? No idea, it just sounds good to me.

Your tracks must be a MAXIMUM OF FIVE MINUTES EACH. I’m here for that nice digestible tried-and-true pop formula, not 20 minute odes to computers taking over the earth or whatever the fuck they sang about back in the day.
31Devo
Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!

BORING RULE

For the purposes of this list, the only waving the US was doing in the latter half of the 20th century was a wave of installing and protecting brutal dictators in poor Latin American and South Asian countries, so NO AMERICAN ARTISTS. That means no solo artists from the US, no bands from the US, no nothing. This should be relatively easy.
32Oingo Boingo
Dead Man's Party

WEIRD RULE

Sadly, I’ve just realised that New Wave is no longer new anymore. Tracks coming out these days called New Wave are now officially Old Wave. That means NO TRACKS FROM THE 2000S OR LATER. Wait, that's not weird enough, the 90s had New Wave somewhere right? All those countries who got the hip thing ten years later than everybody else? I’m probably correct, so your playlist must contain AT LEAST TWO TRACKS FROM THE 90s. Smells Like Teen Spirit may have killed rock synth for a decade in America, but other places were still grooving in comically bad outfits for a while after.
33The B-52s
The B-52's

TL:DR

Genre: New Wave
Constraints: 8 tracks, no songs longer than 5 minutes.
Boring Rule: No US artists.
Weird Rule: No tracks from 2000s or later, at least two tracks from the 90s.

Deadline: 7th March.
