Mercury's Best 25 of 2016

SO, I think we can all agree that despite the rain of shit 2016 dealt a lot of us, it was an absolute cracker for music. I feel before I go on that my list isn't JUST going on what is subjectively better, but the records I keep coming back to despite their flaws. Also where relevant I've included links to my reviews.

Oscillator Breach

Big shout-out to JohnnyOnTheSpot for this one. Woulda gone totally unnoticed otherwise.

Nonagon Infinity

Pure, unadulterated, chaotic mess.
9Animals As Leaders
The Madness of Many

Beautiful, my second favourite release to date behind Weightless.

8The Algorithm
Brute Force

Crushingly heavy, a little one-dimensional in places, but obscenely well produced.

7Three Trapped Tigers
Silent Earthling

Techy, spazzy, super fun riot.
6The Black Queen

5Death Grips
Bottomless Pit

The perfect headfuck.

4Russian Circles
Guidance

OK so my review may have been a little hyperbolic and OTT given the objective talent on display here, but this album resonated with me in a big way and I can't stop myself coming back.

3David Bowie
Blackstar

From an objective standpoint, this blows everything else out of the water. The emotion, the poignancy, the bared soul, everything about this is beauty, but it is still incredibly hard for me to listen to.
2Avenged Sevenfold
The Stage

Holy fuck, they REALLY came through on this one, every listen is giving me something new, something unexpected, and I never had them down as ones for subtlety...

1The Dillinger Escape Plan
Dissociation

Everything that I'd hoped for from the final release of one of the greatest bands around for defining my taste.
