"tbh ive always felt like j-horror is rly hit and miss and people always just say its objectively better cause it looks more cultured or whatever"
The best J-Horror is the one that fucks with your head, because South Korea and Japan knows how to establish a really dark atmosphere/mood but the good movies that they put out demand patience and are far more rewarding and interesting than most of the Hollywood Horror bs. So if you liked the american version better then I'm pretty sure that J-Horror is just not for you. That said, not all J-Horror is gold, I've seen some Japanese horror movies that were pretty fucking terrible |
Kman418
04.21.16 | i have no problem with slow movies that rely on mood/atmosphere but those two movies do not do that well at all. there are j-horror movies that do pull that off, a tale of two sisters is quality and while noroi is really messy/unfocused but it pulls off a few nice moments and has a well built atmosphere to it. i just think the idea that they're somehow inherently more atmosphere driven than most other horror movies is silly cause i'd say they hit the mark at about the same rate as any other country does and i feel a lot of stuff thats pretty garbage gets a pass cuz its japanese and people have this weird overhyped view of j-horror movies (like ringu and whatever the original grudge was called) |
Kman418

Shuyin
04.21.16 | I can't speak much for the Ringu and the Ju-On franchise (The Grudge) because that was my introduction to the whole foreign/Asian horror scene, at the time I found some enjoyment in them tbh. The thing is that I appreciate a good/original story and eerie moments in horror, and South Korean cinema nails it perfectly, while Hollywood just focuses on flashy visuals which detracts from the overall experience because their movies end up being dumb af, with dull camera work/story and acting. So when something happens near the end, I'm no longer invested in the story. That's why people lose their shit when something unique appears like the The Babadook and It Follows, The Conjuring was pretty damn good as well
I can name a lot of Japanese horror movies that were pretty bad, and in fact I've been only getting the bad movies lately because there really isn't a lot of actually good horror movies to see. Ghost Train is the worst horror movie I've ever seen |

04.22.16 | Check Hush, it's on netflix and it's fantastic. It's just a really well executed simple horror movie with a brilliant premise. It's about a deaf woman who is being toyed with in her house by someone who is basically constantly a step ahead of her. Really good cat-and-mouse style movie, total gem. You can practically hear the gears spinning in both of their heads and most of the movie is conveyed non-verbally.
Plus it's scarier than It Follows and it's far better than Babadook. Two thumbs up, check it out. Please. |
Kman418
04.22.16 | hush was a piece of garbage |
wwf
04.22.16 | ^Get out of my face with that shit lmao
It Follows is clearly lovingly made and it's approach to it's characters is really sweet and endearing but it's just terrible at being scary for me personally on the second half. It's just impossible to sustain tension on that premise |
Kman418
04.22.16 | yeah its not scary at all but i haven't actually watched horror movies to be scared in a long ass time so that didn't really bother me. its just astoundingly well made, it captures the specific aesthetic its going for shockingly well and has some incredibly well crafted visuals and overall atmosphere
but honestly idk why hush is getting the attention its getting right now, the characters felt incredibly simplistic/poorly written, it didn't do much new compared to other home invasion movies (other than the whole deaf aspect, which ultimately felt sort of gimmicky seeing as it felt like they only included it to have a few situations that felt new on the surface level), and the visuals were incredibly flat. good visuals especially are way way more important in a horror movie than most other genres |
wwf
04.22.16 | it's funny that you pretty much nailed what I think about It Follows but I have literally the exact opposite feeling about Hush, since you're literally the first person I've talked to about it, online or otherwise. I thought the visuals were great. It might not be It Follows level visually but it's still a pretty good looking horror movie. Or maybe I was distracted by how attractive both movie's leads were |
Kman418
04.22.16 | idk im sort of a snob when it comes to visuals cause thats like by far the biggest draw to film for me both as a viewer and a filmmaker so i probably place way more value on visuals and am way more critical of them than most people. i just felt like with hush most of the camera work was pretty generic, it was really overlit like most standard horror movies and had a pretty limited color palette, there were a ton of really basic tracking/dolly shots that just followed the action of the scene without much intention and sort of on that same note, i didn't feel like most of it was particularly well framed. i don't think it had bad visuals, they were just sort of generic and felt like what i'd expect from a random horror film i found on netflix. the mask had a nice look to it but the dude took it off after like 5 minutes anyways |
wwf
04.22.16 | you were clearly watching it from a filmmaker's perspective while I was just watching it as a semi-casual moviegoer but I have to say if Hush disappointed you visually, you must be soooooo massively distraught about the state of the horror industry lately lmao because so many big horror movies can hardly even qualify as films |
Insurrection
04.22.16 | why are you acting like hush is a horror movie. it's a well crafted thriller with some slasher tropes if anything. personally i loved the deaf aspect. that scene where she's going over options in her head was great |
Sevengill
04.22.16 | if I may interject, aren't thriller and slasher types of horror? |
Kman418
04.22.16 | the state of big budget horror movies is pretty shitty right now as it has been for the last 2 or 3 decades but actually i think the 10s are the best decade for horror so far since the 80s when you actually start looking into lesser known independent stuff. like just in the last 5 years alone, there have been soooo many really incredible horror movies that just entirely flew under the radar cause they were really small projects and didn't get wide releases. like if you're willing to dig a bit more and know where to look there's some really great stuff being made right now |
Sevengill
04.22.16 | which is why I'm mining yall's knowledge base for those under the radar movies. so far so good. |
Shemson
04.22.16 | I would class slasher as a type of horror but not thrillers. Thrillers to me are movies like Memento or The Usual Suspects where you're not 100% sure what's going on or what's coming next and you get a good pay off at the end (which lets face it you rarely do with horror or slashers) |
Sevengill
04.22.16 | Yeah that's fair. there's a lot of crossover but Alfred Hitchcock isn't really horror. |

04.22.16 | However if you're into Hitchcock there's a really creepy TV series called Bates Motel which is based on Mrs Bates taking over the hotel whilst Norman is still a teen. I've seen the first 8 or so episodes and it's really good and very dark. |

I always classified thrillers sort of as horror-lite. Whereas horror aims to shock or scare, thrillers are more about create a sort of uneasy feeling. Something like Shutter Island would fall under thriller imo because it relies a lot on suspense and the unknown to create that feeling of unease but never crosses over to where it feels like it's trying to scare you.
Also, for the record, when I say horror-lite I don't mean that as a negative against thrillers. Tbh the track record for thrillers is probably better than for horrors |
Sevengill
04.22.16 | Thrillers have to be a little more artistic to get the right vibe. Horror can go for the throat, whereas classic thrillers require more subtlety and plot dexterity to get that climax. |

07.10.16 | It's not a maneater, but I watched Hush recently, and I loved it. It's more of a thriller than a horror, but I highly recommend it. |

07.10.16 | We went to see The Shallows and at the first shark attack my friend laughed inappropriately loudly in a quick shriek. I pretty much died. |
mifzal
07.10.16 | The Shallows was surprisingly good for a shark movie |

07.10.16 | 20 minutes of Blake Lively's backside was a great way to introduce suspension of disbelief |

07.10.16 | 3 and 7 were laughable movies, hardly the stuff that makes a film scary |

07.10.16 | Creepshow's got a great old-school fun horror vibe, one of my favorites.
The Beyond - Hell and gore and zombies and supernatural spirits and killer spiders and...
Don't Look Now (how nobody's mentioned this one yet is unbelievable)
Kwaidan - Japanese supernatural anthology horror with arguably the greatest production design in history
Martyrs [∞]
Repulsion - one of the best in any genre ever.
The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears - almost no discernable plot, but the style is absolutely brilliant and really fucking unsettling
Baby Blood - gruesome and insane
Intruder (1989) - way too often forgotten slasher, an ultra gory hidden gem
StageFright: Aquarius - Late period giallo, really creepy and so much fucking fun
Blood and Black Lace - Established the giallo, and is designed so gorgeously, even the cinematography becomes unsettling. |

:O Do it now !! and watch the 2011 prequel as well. It's a decent movie |
porcupinetheater
07.10.16 | You can definitely skip the overly cgi-ed try hard shitfest that is The Thing's 2011 prequel.
1982 version's genius, though, agreed. |

07.11.16 | update: They Look Like People (2015) is an indie masterpiece
no jumpscares, some skin-crawling moments, but it's all built on a really strong, lovable, emotional core that keeps the whole thing going. really strong performances and writing. highly recommended |
