con tracks his 2023
i'm never on top of recent releases so im gonna just post every album I have/wanna listen to here to help me keep track. feel free to rec, feel free to hate, ill be updating this (hopefully) over the course of the rest of the year. goal is to get to 100 albums!! |
1 | | Paramore This Is Why
2.23/5
I did enjoy at least 2 songs off this and I'm not gonna hate Paramore just to hate them cuz they are a nice reminder of the past, but this is NOT it folks. sounds really polished and definitely gets a bit better by the end but the only thing I truly remember off this is the god awful t/t chorus and some cringey lyrics so yeah big no for me |
2 | | Lil Yachty Let's Start Here.
2.66/5
I enjoyed a few songs off this too and after I relistened, it def grew on me a biiiiiiit but yatchy's vocals can't carry him. I appreciate the fact he loves Tame Impala as much as I do but most of these songs have v little staying power. it seems to have left a mark on the rap/pop culture tho and I gotta give it props for normalizing psych rap a bit more for the youngins |
3 | | Flume Things Don't Always Go the Way You Plan
3.41/5
I LOVE the first song off this, such a hard beat. this reminds me of my fav release by him (Hi this is Flume) but a bit tooooo b-side heavy for it to reach the heights of that mixtape. lots of cool ideas here and a pleasant listen all the way through but again not much staying power in a lot of these tracks. |
4 | | Rebecca Black Let Her Burn
3.47/5
this surprised me...ngl...don't really have much else to say but there's like at least 4 SOLID songs on here and a couple songs have some insaneeee production too. can't really diss her for this, it's a solid pop record and has some different things going on that really help elevate it to the brink of "cutting edge" but overall nothing TOO special just a nice story to see her get some fame instead of infamy. |
5 | | Fall Out Boy So Much (For) Stardust
3.64/5
really really surprising comeback...Heaven, Iowa and the closer I've had on repeat for awhile now and I can only see this thing growing. Listening to some of these songs for the first time gave me flashbacks to when they were releasing singles for Folie and that nostalgia factor is def helping this album a lot (I must admit). however, there are a few mehhh/bad songs near the beginning but I can't help but think they made a conscious effort NOT to make a radio hit song. this one for the OG fans I guess....really solid |
6 | | Piri & Tommy froge.mp3
3.55/5 (EDIT: guess this was 2022 but idc close enough)
my gf rec'd this to me and it's actually super nice to listen thru. really fun beats and smooth vox...def got that modern hyperpop touch to it which I don't mind either. feels a lot like some house/r&b mixture and piri def has that knack for good melodies. really solid but doesn't do anything crazy special for it to be rated higher. |
7 | | JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown Scaring the Hoes
3.91/5 (??)
Well, I've listened to this almost 4 times front to back and I'm still not sure I have my rating down for this project. On one hand, this is definitely original and I gotta give it a lot of points for that. On the other hand, this sounds almost unlistenable (?) if I'm not in the right mood for it. like, for example, i tried to jam one hazey morning and was extremely overwhelmed and it's obvious the production is meant to invoke this (to what degree? im not sure). I'll keep coming back to this as it prob gonna grow....but for now slapping a tentative 4 and an easy AOTY candidate |

14 | | 6LACK Since I Have A Lover
3.44/5
6LACK is such a great feature artist and has all the skills to make an incredible r&b/rap/moody love album. However, just like his first release, this project has too much fluff with that fluff consisting of extremely muted and lulling ballad type beats with somewhat passable poetic lyrics. There's some bangers on this one tho...and since I liked around 5-6 of the 19 songs, I'd say that's a slight W for him as this easily couldve been a snoozefest. Tracklisting does help a lot by breaking up the monotony, so if ya listen just skip through the album and most likely every other track you'll dig. |
15 | | slowthai UGLY
4.12/5
wow so this is def an early AOTY contender. really love the king krule influence...super grimy not really rap shit but damn...most of the songs are great. It really is consistent to listen to thematically/tonally while still varying the styles to keep it fresh and interesting. loved this big props to him for making a leap of faith with this project |
16 | | Domestic Terminal The Flooded Basement EP
n/a |
17 | | Jack Harlow Jackman
2.41/5
uhh this was better than his last album and the first two or three tracks had me vibing (love the samples mmmm) but uhh halfway thru he kinda drops a whole song about his friends being predators?? and like doesn't really say anything about it....very confusing, rest of the album kinda falters after that. no great hooks, but almost average which is an improvement ig |
18 | | Billy Woods and Kenny Segal Maps
n/a |
19 | | Jeromes Dream The Gray In Between
4.22/5
woahh boy this SLAPS and ngl was entirely unexpected considering i thought the lead singer blew his vocal chords out and could only do that lower monotone shouty vox as seen in the 2019 album. while not as high pitched and shrieky as their OG stuff, the screams are more than competent and really well done. love the riffs here too...and the way it slows down juuuuust a bit near the end with twinkly sections is amazing much love to this release. |
