Czech & Slovak recommendations you need to hear

I made a list of mostly unknown underground bands / interprets from Czechia (where I'm from) and Slovakia that deserve bigger recognition imho. This could be an inspiration for finding new music and I think all of these albums could resonate with Sput. Our local scene has a lot to offer, but sadly hasn't much of an impact outside these two countries. Genres are various (although strongly inclining to emo and post metal, as you can see), no particluar order. I didn't add my bands / projects, but you can find them in my other lists if you're interested. :) Hope you'll find something you like!
1Lvmen
Mondo

genre: post metal

This one has quite a name in the post metal / post hardcore field. Czech legends that deserve to be listed among genre giants like Neurosis, Cult of Luna and Isis.

2Therapist
Svet/lo Slepých

genre: funeral doom

This Slovak band is quite new and unknown even in local terms, but this album is spectacular. It sounds like the landscape on its cover, haunting, harsh, but also beautiful and epic. Genre-wise, it's a very slow doom metal record with massive track lengths, but sonically it even reminds me of The Angellic Process, although not that massive, the soundscapes and huge all-consuming riffs are there. Lo-fi masterpiece, highly recommended!

352 Hertz Whale
I've met a lot of people

genre: emo post punk

These Slovaks are named after the loneliest whale in the ocean and you can tell. I've always imagined their music as a cross between MewithoutYou and The Twilight Sad, with adequately expressive vocals, post-rock tendencies and huge buildups. They have a record from last year, which is more precise, better composition-wise and has bigger hits, but I prefer this older record, which has a lot more lo-fi feeling. It sounds off sometimes but it's a part of the beauty and I think it captures their extraordinary live performance the best.

4Orient
Redwood

genre: progressive / art rock

Another effective genre mashup, this time from Czechia. This formerly electronic band made something like a rock record and it's full of weird sounds, tasty synths and unpredictable compositions with many unexpected twists and turns. But despite all the experimenting, there are still catchy grooves and even pop tendencies.

5Katarina Malikova
Postalgia

genre: folk / electronic

HUGE record from Slovak singer / songwriter. Beautiful alternative and jazz-influenced folk ballads from her first record Pustvopol are here transformed to a Radiohead-like masterpiece with amazing synths, dark atmosphere and impressive vocals.

6nulajednanulanula
Život je pomalá smrt

genre: screamo

Also stylized as 0100, this Czech band brings uncompromising emo violence and screamo, while occasionally slowing down with post-rock sections. The translation of the album name is "life is a slow death" and you're gonna feel it. State Faults anyone?

7Shallov
Compress, Expand

genre: emo / post rock

There is a really cool emo scene constructed around 52 Hertz Whale and these guys. The style of Shallov is based on classic emo and post-rock basis, but in their long tracks, you'll get loads of original chord progressions, weird guitar sounds, unexpected tempo changes and desparate vocals. Adventurous music at its finest, my closest association are probably Glassing.

8Uz Jsme Doma
Hollywood

genre: art punk

UJD are probably the most well known underground band outside our country and this 1993 record is also the oldest on this lists. Their significant freaked out alternative punk with delicious saxophone is turned up to eleven here. In Czechia, they have a well-deserved cult status and there is also a long common history of UJD with The Residents and you can tell.
9Drom
UR (split w/ Tengri)

genre: post metal

Another massive Czech post metal, the two tracks on this split are among the finest in the genre. Drom are clearly inspired by Lvmen and a Cult of Luna reference is also valid here.

10Tabor
Liebe

genre: ambient folk

This record combines mantric semi-acoustic compositions with noise and 90s Swans vibes. The sound of lost places, ruins and haunting history of Czechia is enhanced by beautifly sounding vintage harmoniums.

11Rutka Laskier
Krásná Doba

genre: emo / post hardcore

Another top-notch Czech emo. Rutka Laskier always combined true oldschool emo with post-rock guitar works, but on this recent EP, they sound angrier and more direct than ever. The texts are in Czech and deal with social, emotional and historical dark themes, which is very fitting for the desparate music.

12Tomas Niesner
Becvou

genre: ambient

This beautiful combination of acoustic guitar, drones, synths and field recordings had a great success among Czech scene last year. Beautiful music is accompanied by a an impressive concept: travelling alongside Czech river Bečva, which was damaged few years ago by a chemical leak, which probably came from a factory owned by our then-active prime minister, so the investigation on the causes went nowhere. Yeah, welcome to the Czech Republic.

Bruises

genre: slowcore/shoegaze

I'm adding this fresh new record because it got reviewed on the front page and I'm happy about it! Beautiful debut record that combines acoustic and electronic elements in the most delicate way. Tight rhythm section, magnificent sad-but-encouraging songs, unique use of autotune and perfect vocal work in general. Perfect little gem that will have a big impact not only in our local scene I hope?
