10 Songs Describing Depression

Songs that you can relate to if you have or had depression
1Car Seat Headrest
Teens of Denial

Fill In the Blank

This whole album is pretty relatable if you've ever experienced anxiety or depression and this intro song sums it up nicely. Will's sick of pretty much everything in his life, feels like he isn't moving forward and constantly questions if he has the right to be depressed, considering he has a pretty decent life. In the below lines he explains how difficult it is to answer questions about it because you're just not sure of the answers.

"So you'll ask 'Why?' and there will be no answer
Then you'll ask 'For how long?' and there will be no answer
Then you'll ask 'What can I do?' and there'll be no answer
And eventually you will shut up"
2Mitski
Puberty 2

Fireworks

A lot of people think depression is just sadness, but really it's mostly a numbness. Mitski emphasises that in this song, talks about how you just go through the motions and explains how that often you'll be reminded of times you weren't depressed, before you felt desensitized to everything around you.

"One morning this sadness will fossilize
And I will forget how to cry
I'll keep going to work and you won't see a change
Save perhaps a slight gray in my eye"
3Little Simz
No Thank You

Broken

A lot of people with depression just feel broken. They feel like their life is done and they have little to no value to people around them. Little Simz puts emphasis on this and explains how not talking about mental health can be very detrimental.

"Smoking weed on your ones, isolating yourself
Am I even enough? Then you question yourself
Man, this week has been tough, been saying that for a year
How do I disappear? Can I hide from my fears?"
4Weyes Blood
Titanic Rising

Something To Believe

Some days start off really well and by no means at all, an emptiness creeps in. Weyes talks about that here. She talks about how she yearns for something to drown out the voices in her head and is in a constant battle to try and make herself feel better.

"Drank a lot of coffee today
Got lost in the fray, I gave all I had for a time
Then by some strange design I got a case of the empties
The ruler of my world, a lost forgotten pearl"
5The The
Soul Mining

This Is the Day

This song describes a person stuck in a depressed routine, hoping their life will change and they'll be happy again. They hold onto their memories, but that's all they are, just memories, and they cannot bring them back.

"You could have done anything, if you wanted
And all your friends and family think that you're lucky
But the side of you they'll never see
Is when you're left alone with your memories"
6Belle and Sebastian
If You're Feeling Sinister

If You're Feeling Sinister

The title track of this album really sums up how lost one can feel with depression. It describes two suicidal people, one who wants to kill himself because it sounds more exciting than living and another who finds everything around her uninteresting so she tries religion that just ends up confusing her more.

"The church up on the hill is looking lovely
But it doesn't interest, the only things she wants to know
Is how and why and when and where to go
How and why and when and where to follow"
7Charli XCX
How I'm Feeling Now

I Finally Understand

Charli does a great job describing how living with depression can be intervined with your love life. She loves her partner, but not herself and even though he is there to comfort her, she can't shake this bad feeling.

"I finally understand, finally understand
My therapist said I hate myself really bad
You tell me it's fine, let me cry and hug it out"
8Yeule
softscars

Sulky Baby

From their newest album, Yeule describes a lot of the same feelings as the above songs, emptiness, suicidal thoughts, wanting comfort, but distancing yourself away from it.

"Sweetness undefeated
I feel your warmth, but I evade it
I wanna eat your face
Can you get me out of this maze?"

Candy Says

This song deals with gender dysphoria and the conflicting feelings that it brings, but is relatable to depression as well. Candy doesn't want to be herself, the "blue birds" or happiness evade her, and she dreams of a better life.

"I'm gonna watch the blue birds fly
Over my shoulder
I'm gonna watch them pass me by
Maybe when I'm older, what do you think I'd see
If I could walk away from me?"
10Lil Ugly Mane
Volcanic Bird Enemy and the Voiced Concern

Discard

The simplest things in life (like taking out the garbage and work) can feel like they drain all the energy out of you when you are depressed. Travis emphasizes this, he feels like he is a burden to the world and is never having any fun (numbness).

"Have a tendency to promise shit
That I can not accomplish
Like the energy to take the garbage
Out of my apartment
I'm the enemy of progress
I just wanna be discarded"
