The heaviest parts are brutal and unrelenting (has a bit of a mathcore flair to it) and the post-rock passages are nice ear candy to allow you to breath. However, this record is a bit of a wash when it is all said and done because of how unforgettable most of it. It?s energetic and explosive to listen to when it's on, but once it?s done, I have already forgotten about it.

Ryus 12.06.23	i wouldnt call it ironic even if they are self-serious, but maybe "goofy" is the wrong word. regardless of the lyrical content/themes, i think death metal is almost inherently silly, playful, and theatrical especially the pre-2000s stuff. thats obviously not the only thing i get from it, but its part of what makes it so fun to listen to a lot of death metal fans might be hesitant to characterize it that way because they want to feel like the art they listen to is serious, important, etc. especially since the genre is so maligned in the eyes of the general public. maybe they earnestly dont think its silly at all which is also fine but thats a lot of the enjoyment i get from it for sure

The slaughter of soul may have been a bit overhyped at the time but there is no way it's a bad album its genre or its time. A classic tactic of taking a controversial stance as some album seems too popular. It ain't even that nowadays.
