recommend me one album

in this exciting new contest, the first ten people who wish to partake shall bestow upon me a "rec." i shall write up a short description, rate each one, and select a very special winner
1Jambinai
A Hermitage

2.7—recommended by Uzumaki
the incorportation of korean folk instruments isn't enough to outweigh the long buildups that don't really pay off on cuts like 'for everything that you lost". the louder tracks are nice and the vocal performance on the abyss is cool. for all of the atmosphere on most tracks, there isn't much substance behind it. "the mountain" is probably the one that has the best payoff. kinda wish there were more vocals. not really my style but it wasn't terrible
2HMOT
Oneirology

recommended by JustJoe
3.4—loses a bit of steam towards the end, but the sound design on the first few tracks is great. i definitely favored the less ambient tracks. "pequeninho" and "tartu" are particularly cool, wish there was more of that. overall pretty solid
3Ryuichi Sakamoto
Thousand Knives Of

recommended by JohnnyoftheWell
3.9—yeah so this was sick. fun, funky and stylistically diverse. i already knew this dude could write some catchy tunes from his work in YMO and this album is no exception. was not expecting that guitar solo on the back half of the t/t but it fits the album well—fun, long-winded, and a bit cheesy. island of woods is slightly out of place but not bad by any means. title track is the big highlight here for me
4Alpha Wann
Une Main Lave l'Autre

recommended by dedex
3.3—this was alright. dude has a pretty good flow. would've liked it better if i could understand french lol. nothing outstanding beat-wise to my ears but easy to listen to. probably a little overlong and he sounds better when he strays away from the more trap-influenced beats. flamme olympique was probably my favorite.
5Ten Wanted Men
Ten Toes Down

recommended by parksungjoon
3.8—tommy wright is the man. this is my shit. the lethargic drugged-out songs like insane n da brain are pretty great. some awesome beats on hear for sure—that flute/recorder? melody on glock, the jazzy drums on shelby drive, and your typical dark keyboard-led melody on let me kill em. like all good memphis rap it's dark, fun, catchy. yea this is good
6the GazettE
DIM

2.2—appreciate big time the massive write-up dave did for the lyrics of this album, but unfortunately when it comes down to it this just isn't my style at all. while technically he has a nice voice, i find ruki's style of singing kind of overwrought. the heavier moments like the invisible wall and headache man were probably the best for me since the cheese on songs like nakigahara was pretty rough. the dirge-like tone permeating the album was sort of interesting but overall this kind of stuff is really not my thing
7Grotus
Slow Motion Apocalypse

recommended by rodrigo90
2.6—this kind of gets a little too mr bungley/faith no morey for my tastes. really not into those styles. but i didn't hate the noisier songs like "The Same Old Sauce." The vocalist was pretty irritating though not gonna lie, particularly insufferable on "Hourglass." "Complications" tries too hard to lean into the 90s mainstream alt-rock sound and fails miserably. the raga-influenced songs were fairly interesting and didn't suffer from the sort of insufferable genre mish-mash that these types of songs sometimes do. for what it is, this isn't awful
8Donovan
Sunshine Superman

recommended by ArsMoriendi
3.7—i knew some of the singles already, the full album was pretty solid. found the title track kind of grating honestly. legend of a girl child linda was certainly a change of pace from the sort of stuff that i've previously heard from this guy—almost felt like proto-prog. you can definitely see the influence this guy had on the nascent psych-rock genre and its variants. i certainly have a lot of respect for him. i'm a big fan of the tamboura so i like how often it shows up here.
9Super Besse
