Kanye's diarrhea came indeed way before the indigestion that was TLOP. Ahead of its time in a way. |

04.21.17 | Def agree on Tim Hecker. Most evocative ambient artist I've heard |

04.21.17 | tim hecker realized the idea the best but he wasn't exactly ahead of his time, fennesz did similar stuff before him, as did jim o'rourke before fennesz. and i bet there was someone who did it even before o'rourke. |
avery14th
04.21.17 | tim hecker agreed. I will be pleasently surprised if 3 ever grows on me in the future |
Papa Universe
04.21.17 | I really dislike how people describe certain things as 'before their time'. If the artist came up with it and released it now, then this is exactly the time it is meant for. And even if it proves itself somehow influential much later, then it was crucial for that particular record to have been released exactly when it was, otherwise it might not have had such an impact in the future. So it wasn't 'ahead of its time', on the contrary, it was exactly and precisely on time, for the times to come. |
AngryLittleAlchemist
04.21.17 | How are they "ahead of their time" if you recognize them at their time as being ahead of their time ? |

04.21.17 | haven't heard anything that sounds like Colin Stetson - New History Warfare Vol. 2 too |

04.21.17 | I have to agree that Kanye's 808's saw the shape of things to come.
People ahead of their time...hmmm... The Stooges? Velvet Underground? |
altertide0
04.21.17 | Confield definitely. As for Colin Stetson I'd say he took a lot from early Ned Rothenberg and Evan Parker.
My picks:
David Sylvian's Blemish/Manafon (singer-songwriter meets free improv/eai),
stuff Natural Snow Buildings recorded around 2008 (superhuman hour long avant-folk/drone/noise/improv pieces)
Lil Ugly Mane - Three Sided Tape trilogy (usually described as hip hop's Soundtracks for the Blind) |
Frippertronics
04.22.17 | [2] on the sylvian
Viscera (Jenny Hval) |
AnimalsAsSummit
04.22.17 | david sylvian and kayo dot
basically any artist that is truly saying "fuck you" to the traditional music formula has the potential |

04.22.17 | none of these will be considered "before their time" because no one gives a shit about them |

04.22.17 | not sure about being ahead of their time but i think these will be influential
The Knife - Shaking The Habitual
Death Grips - The Money Store
Animal Collective - Feels
Swans - The Seer
Casualties of Cool - Casualties of Cool
Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma |

04.22.17 | 1 is pretty but I don't see its relevance. 4 is a bedroom folk album, they were, are and will be a lot of them. The rest I don't know them tbh. |
Cygnatti
04.22.17 | i'd like to think v:d:c will be influential one day but maybe not :'[ |
JigglyPDiddy
04.22.17 | Swans - Soundtracks For The Blind
this thing was a major influence on post-rock outfits that were coming up at that time/later
Arrested Development - 3 Days, 5 Years, 2 Days
I guess because it came as a breath of fresh air in the south with so much gangsta/hardcore rap being produced at the time?
I have to agree with FlyLo's Cosmogramma. That shit really left an impact on many electronic producers. To this day many are trying to rip it off.
Death Grips - The Money Store laid the groundwork for many new noisy/industrial/lo-fi hip-hop tinged acts that came afterwards like Young Fathers (in their lo-fi pop/rap) and clipping. and such.
Radiohead's OKC was before its time in the sense that sooooo many bands tried to rip it off afterwards. *cough cough Coldplay/The Killers cough cough* |
JigglyPDiddy
04.22.17 | Oh and Fever Ray's self-titled was/is/will forever be ahead of the curve in every regard. GOAT |
Piglet
04.22.17 | Shaking The Habitual is more wacky and ahead of the curve than Fever Ray self titled imo |
Toad
04.22.17 | Death Grips - Exmilitary/Money Store and FlyLo's Cosmogramma [3] |
Ryus
04.22.17 | yeah i repeat: this list is just random digs |
Dedes
04.22.17 | But can you really predict what's "before its time?" Times change dude. |
Toad
04.22.17 | What makes it difficult as well is a lack of 'followers' for several groups we consider ahead of their time - like were Talk Talk's last two records that 'ahead of their time' if very few artists make music that sounds like that? |
Dedes
04.22.17 | Yeah theirs that as well. A band like Lykathea Aflame could be "ahead of their time" but hell still no one sounds like them |
Cygnatti
04.22.17 | "yeah i repeat: this list is just random digs"
make it obvious for us next time, fam :/ |
Cygnatti
04.22.17 | "i'd like to hope v:d:c won't ever be influential seeing as the shoegaze wank ruins it"
sad but i get what you mean.
i meant it as influential to shoegaze rather than necessarily influential to idm. i'd like to see shoegaze try some other sounds now and then (not that i know anything about newer shoegaze anyways). |
