| Godspeed You! Black Emperor Ranked
Continuing my ranked lists of my favourite artists, words cannot express how much of an impact numbers one and two had on my life. Thank you Godspeed, also if anyone uses absolutes in the comments just because it has a lower average on this site then you don't understand the point of these lists. | 1 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor F#A# (Infinity)
Narrowly beating Lift Yr Skinny Fists, my reasoning is simply down to it being a shorter album, meaning that I don't have to put as much time aside to enjoy it. Also all three tracks are just pure Godspeed, and having seen East Hastings live gives me fond memories of that unforgettable show. | 2 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
Sleep is my favourite single track by these guys, and it is easy to understand why due to it being synonymous with the group. Just saying 'they don't sleep any more on the beach' triggers me. The album is one of the most iconic experimental rock albums, and I am proud to say it is the album that broadened my musical horizons, allowing me to have some amazing life experiences. | 3 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada
My pick for a entry point into the bands music, this EP has absolutely no fat on it, each build being amongst Godspeed's greatest compositions. It is only low down because it is only an EP, but I wouldn't deny that it is probably their most consistent release. | 4 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!
This album gets some really undeserved hate, both of the main tracks on this album are some of the heaviest music Godspeed has made and incorporate some new techniques and timbre's into Godspeed's arsenal. Leaving sections of Musique Concrete and Avant Garde behind (mostly) to focus on blocks of thick distorted string and guitar soundscapes, there is really no filler on this thing. Even the two drone pieces create this unique musical landscape which set the middle eastern tone, making the two long form pieces even more effective. I think some people need to give this another listen. | 5 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor 'Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress'
Another album which needs to be given a fair shot, I think too many people where quick to judge this thing either because it was their first exposure to the band or because it was too familiar to them due to bootleg recordings of the track being uploaded. The only misstep of the album is that it separated each movement into separate tracks, which made the first three tracks disposable to some people because they just skipped to the end. Which I agree is amazing, but its the a climax to a forty minute Godspeed track, that's to be expected. | 6 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Yanqui U.X.O.
The only reason this is my least favourite album is because I don't find the harmonies within the pieces as emotive as previous or more recent albums, this may be due to me not giving it as much time as the others, however all the new stuff hooked me instantly. This however hasn't, yet. I can't wait for it to do so, but until then its my least favourite of their output. | |

04.21.15 | I'd raise 6 and maybe switch 1 and 2, good ranking | minty901
04.21.15 | Glad Asunder isn't last. Also when will people stop giving their own rankings with numbers, forcing me to scroll up and double check everything? My ranking:
1. Asunder
2. Slow Riot
3. Lift Your...
4. Allelujah!
5. F#A#
6. Yanqui | Artuma
04.21.15 | 1 > 3 > 2 > 5 = 6 > 4 | HarrySmalldini97
04.21.15 | I went to a concert in London to see these guys, and they sold out a large venue. I am over the moon that an artist as experimental and uncompromising as Godspeed can sell out such a large venue. And yes the show was better than any other show I have ever been to. Thanks for the comments everyone | ChoccyPhilly
04.21.15 | Nice description for 4 | auxilia
04.23.15 | I've always kind of had a soft spot for Yanqui, I'd swap it with Slow Riot at 3 and put Asunder at 6. I liked Asunder but it just didn't stick out as much as others. Not bad by any means though. Agree with everything else. | MO
04.23.15 | 1 > 3 > 4 > 2 = 6 > 5 | guitarded_chuck
04.23.15 | id switch 5 and 4 but agreed with the rest of it | altertide0
04.23.15 | Lift > F > Yanqui > Allelujah > Riot > Asunder.
The last one is extreeeeemely recycled and thus pretty boring, save for the drone tracks. Riot is really like Lift, but much, much less effective, feels unfinished. Allelujah contains maybe their best track ("Mladic") but the rest is mere filler. "Motherfucker 1" has the best soundscapes the've ever done, the pulsating guitars are just beautiful, a perfect post-apo soundtrack, and "Rockets Fall" is also very good. "09-15-00" sucks though. I think the album is hated for its lack of catchy melodies present in their other releases, but all the emotion's in the textures. It's about the atmosphere, and it rules. F is ofc revolutionary. And Lift is almost perfect, especially the last track, pure genius (up there with "Mladic"). | auxilia
04.24.15 | Yeah Motherfucker = Redeemer is one of my favorite tracks they've done. The more I listen to Yanqui the more I like it, it's definitely grows on you with repeated listens. | HarrySmalldini97
04.24.15 | Yeah some tracks on Yanqui are fantastic but it does have weaker moments. I disagree about Allelujah, Mladic and We Drift Like Worried Fire are both up there as Godspeeds best. And the drones give the perfect breathing room. My love for Assunder is from seeing them play it live, plus I didn't overplay the bootleg so I hadn't already killed it for me | Rawmeeth38
04.27.15 | 1 is 1 and that's all that matters for me | Artax36
04.28.15 | F#A# = Lift Yr = Slow Riot > Yanqui > Allelujah > Asunder | HarrySmalldini97
05.03.15 | Anyone who aren't fans of the middle eastern/sludgy sound of the past two records should look forward to their next release, as I heard two new songs live and they sound more modern classical than middle eastern. One track in particular was one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever heard |
