06.17.16 | yeah dude it's the best genre, dont miss out. i love it mostly because i grew up on it. it was literally the only genre i listened to growing up, but that's really only because of my environment. even later on when i started to get serious about music it's always been my go-to genre. nothing paints a picture or tells a story quite like a hip hop record. albums like Illmatic and the Infamous will always be timeless to me because of that, they just painted really vivid pictures and i really related to them as well (moreso Illmatic) cuz their depictions were really similar to my life growing up
then there's just the rhythm and flow of the delivery as well as the worldplay that really appeals to me. Big L is the king in that area in my eyes, and i never tire of him spitting outrageous rhymes with crazy attention to rhythm and rhyme. check out his album Lifestylez, it's prob my favorite hip-hop album these days
it's also like the ultimate driving genre. nothing beats cruising to some bumping hip hop on a summer day with the windows down. west coast g-funk is the best for that. seriously, if you've never cruised to g-funk ur doing life wrong. check this list for some good shit http://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=515826&listid=165428 . also for me Drake is the modern pinnacle of cruising music, so i'm listening to his shit like 50% of the time on the road
and then there's the party/casual aspect to hip hop. we used to get down to crunk in my days, but now it's trap music that's making waves. the beats and the flows are usually catchy as hell and tailored to dance to. just dont fall into the same mistake a lot of ppl make by disavowing it because the lyrics arent conventionally 'good'. when ur turning up, i really doubt u'll be paying close attention to the lyrics anyway. long story short, peep these albums to start with
Nas - Illmatic
Big L - Lifestylez of da Poor and Dangerous
Gang Starr - Moment of Truth
Mobb Deep - The Infamous
Foesum - Perfection
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
The Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die
Lord Finesse - The Awakening
2pac - All Eyez on Me
Souls of Mischief - 93 til Infinity |

06.17.16 | hip hop appeals to certain personality types
if you like controversial music, stuff that's thought provoking, hedonistic, selfish and impulsive, you'd probably like hip hop. start with the golden era (beastie boys, eric b and rakim, public enemy), then transition into the 90s and see what you like. Most people end up loving Wutang and Nas because they feel like they're supposed to, but there is pretty much a good artist for any style.
Also don't limit yourself to NY or west coast rap. The south's got something to say too!
for entry level, I don't think it gets better than Eminem. SSLP and MMLP are great places to start since they're hard and jammin' but accessible. |

06.17.16 | sometimes hip-hop hits a spot that no other genre can reach. that moment when the flow lines up perfectly with a perfectly made beat.. oomph. gets ya goin. i see there's a lot of reccs already, but these are exquisite as well if you get to em:
Hawk House - A Handshake to the Brain
Genelec & Memphis Reigns - Scorpion Circles

06.18.16 | Well, I think hip hop is good because how varied the genre is in almost every way. I like how much thought and/or emotions a hip hop track can evoke, and their seems to be a hip hop album that fits any type of mood. The genre is very dynamic and is constantly evolving which is pretty hard to say about most genres. New sounds and ideas are being put out everyday, in the mainstream and in the underground. Their is a huge variety of lyricists, and a huge variety of production styles (which is arguably more important then the actual rapping in a hip hop song). There is no restriction on subject matter, so lyricists are pretty much free to express any idea they want to. I think that sums up why I like hip hop so much.
Honestly dude, just start with what you think you would like. |
