05.03.12 | no Nausica and the Valley of the Wind or Princess Mononoke? Nice job with Monster though |
IMZA1793
05.03.12 | need to see some anime again. i remember 2 having the weirdest excuse for an ending though, and 14 didn't help at all.
Favorite manga/anime ever is FMA and Brotherhood should be in the top 10 imo |
robertsona
05.03.12 | monster is the only good one |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | naucissa is decent but its not really a favorite. and i actually haven't seen princess mononoke, i know its blasphemy, i really need to see it already. |

05.03.12 | no way is death note anywhere near the top
also where the hell are cowboy bebop and trigun? |
TheSpirit
05.03.12 | needs zeta gundam |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | a lot of people didn't like the ending to evangelion, but honestly i loved it. it shows what's going on in shinji's mind, and end of evangelion shows what is going on externally during the same timeframe. so they're basically happening at the same time, its really confusing haha. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | oh fuck i knew i forgot something. yeah cowboy bebop should be on here somewhere. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | "no way is death note anywhere near the top"
again this isn't ranked. |
IMZA1793
05.03.12 | well i hated the series ending (episodes 25 and 26 if i'm not wrong) but i kinda liked The End Of Evangelion. That movie was awesome, even though i had to read like 3 wiki pages and like 5 forum threads to understand it. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | yeah i had to read a lot of stuff to understand it too, but once you get it it really hits hard, at least it did for me.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2002-06-11
that artice does a really good job of explaining the meanings behind the series if you ever feel like reading it. its a great article, i've showed it to all my friends and its helped them all understand it.
"monster is the only good one"
so you've seen all of these?

BlueW
05.03.12 | not really a big fan of Death Note at all, no Clannad After Story? |
BarkHammer
05.03.12 | Samurai Champloo
FLCL |
HitlerIsGod
05.03.12 | mind game should be on here. fucking mindfuck. |
ChuckyTruant
05.03.12 | I like Naruto haha |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | haven't seen clannad, but i thought air was pretty good.
i almost included FLCL but it just barely got bumped off. i read some of the samurai champloo manga, i've been meaning to watch the anime but i've never gotten around to it. and i'll check out mind game, i absolutely love mindfuck anime. |
IMZA1793
05.03.12 | hahaha FLCL is awesome. Hits harder after getting through the EVA "ending depression", especially knowing that its the same studio. |
IMZA1793
05.03.12 | also, have you read Bakuman? it's the same 2 guys that made Death Note and it's pretty good (the manga is at least. the anime is kinda lame) |
BlueW
05.03.12 | Shit man, after story is like ranked #4 on MAL. First season of clannad is like a really long prologue of sorts but still really good in it's own right and essential if you're gonna watch AS. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | anyone have any recs based on this list? i'm not a huge action or shonen fan, i mostly like drama and psychological stuff, and i like really tragic/sad stuff for some reason. but any recs based on this list would be appreciated, i've been looking for something new to watch. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | i haven't read bakuman, i loved death note but bakuman never really appealed to me that much. and i'll check out clannad, its made by the same studio as air right? because i enjoyed air, although i haven't seen it in three of four years. |
Yotimi
05.03.12 | The first half of Death Note was great but the second half wasn't as good. Still loved it overall. Only Anime series I've seen though |
IMZA1793
05.03.12 | wow i though i was the only one that used MAL from here hahaha. |
IMZA1793
05.03.12 | if you want some psychological craziness watch Higurashi no naku koro ni (maybe umineko, the spiritual succesor, but it kinda sucks in the long run).
Also Mirai Nikki. |
Recspecs
05.03.12 | Samurai Champloo
Cowboy Bebop |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | yeah higurashi is good. and i know a lot of people didn't like the latter half of death note, i agree it slowed down a bit with the whole yotsuba arc but i really liked the ending. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | yeah like i said i totally forgot cowboy bebop, i do really like that one. |
IMZA1793
05.03.12 | I hated Mello and Near, but it was still a decent second half. |
BlueW
05.03.12 | aubergine: if you like sad stuff, after story is ridiculously sad. original is far more light hearted and from what I've heard Clannad kicks the shit out of Air. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | yeah they got a little stale, especially near, but it didn't ruin the show for me or anything. i really did love the ending, it was perfectly tragic. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | okay i'll definitely check out clannad, thanks. |
IMZA1793
05.03.12 | also you should check out "The Girl who Leapt through time" and "Summer Wars", if you haven't already. Both are awesome, especially the first one. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | yeah the girl who leapt through time is awesome, and i've been meaning to check out summer wars too. |
DougTheRanter
05.03.12 | If you're into psychological and depressing stuff check out Spice and Wolf, Gosick and Steins;Gate. Also Mirai Nikki is really good. |
Recspecs
05.03.12 | You should watch Sailor Moon. Or use Google to find some solid hentai. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | spice and wolf was good but i wouldn't call it anywhere near psychological, or depressing for that matter. |
IMZA1793
05.03.12 | also, is Baccano! good?. I've heard a lot of people say it's good but it doesn't seem that interesting. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | yeah i really like baccano!, its really hard to follow though because the story is told in a nonlinear fashion, like the episodes each focus around a different character or group of characters and they intertwine as the series progresses. it has a really cool, unique art style and mobster aesthetic which i liked a lot. i'd say check it out, especially considering its not that long. i need to watch it again because the nonlinear format got a little confusing, but i did like it a lot. |
DougTheRanter
05.03.12 | I can agree with that, the second season is kinda depressing. Gosick is like a Sherlock Holmes mystery show, but it's kind of psychological and Steins;Gate is just very well done in general. If you haven't seen it, watch Madoka Magica as well, it has action in it, but it's pretty messed up especially for a magical girl anime. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | okay i'll look into those, thanks. |
IMZA1793
05.03.12 | looks like i have at least 5 animes to see now hahaha. It's been a while since i saw any anime so this should be interesting. |
IMZA1793
05.03.12 | i like 12 for its shock value. not something i would watch ever again though. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | yeah i agree its awesome, the 1920's setting is really cool and original for an anime.
if i could recommend everybody one anime it would be gankutsuou: the count of monte cristo. its very loosely based on the original novel. its an absolutely visually stunning series, and probably the most emotionally engaging revenge tale i've ever seen. the way its paced so that it gives you just the right amount of information but still leaves you guessing with each episode is impeccable. its far and away the most overlooked anime out there, even if it has recieved great scores by critics. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | also, has anyone else seen voices of a distant star? i haven't seen it in a few years, but i've never
been so depressed by anything in my life. its a short film, only about 20 minutes long, but oh my god
is it depressing. like i couldn't even get it off my mind for several days afterwards, its the only
anime/movie/book/anything that i'd almost go as far as to say is TOO sad, but undeniably a work of
art. especially considering it was basically made by one guy. |
IMZA1793
05.03.12 | sounds interesting. a little like Mushishi |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | sorry, which one were you referring to imza1793? |
IMZA1793
05.03.12 | Gankutsou. Sounds kinda similar to Mushishi but not that much hahaha |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | oh, well i haven't seen mushishi but from what i know about it gankutsuou is much more serialized than mushishi, which if i remember correctly is more episodic. |
IMZA1793
05.03.12 | seen this one?:

DougTheRanter
05.03.12 | Sword of the Stranger is really well done, one of my friends showed me that a couple weeks ago. |
auberginedreams

yeah dude i know how it is, thankfully i have a couple friends that showed me the path to the good stuff and then i just took it on my own from there. its just like music, the best stuff gets the least attention. |

05.03.12 | the ones that i know from here are pretty cool |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | alright cool. hopefully i didn't overhype its sadness and end up looking like a pussy, but its pretty renowned for being one of the most depressing animes so i don't think i'm alone haha. |
IMZA1793
05.03.12 | sounds like i would get really depressed with that. I remember the death of the first Chimera(the little girl one) in FMA affecting me a lot years ago hahaha |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | any and all metalheads on this site should watch detroit metal city, its basically a hilarious parody of death metal and black metal. like metalocalypse but way more explicit and more funny. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | "sounds like i would get really depressed with that. I remember the death of the first Chimera(the little girl one) in FMA affecting me a lot years ago hahaha"

auberginedreams
05.03.12 | here is an example of the lyrics in the main characters death metal band:

05.03.12 | sweet ive been downloading a bunch of anime lately i will surely look into some of these |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | if anyone's looking for anything in a specific genre (drama/comedy/whatever) i can try and help them out since i didn't put any descriptions on this list. |
DougTheRanter
05.03.12 | So, I finished Voices of a Distant Star and you were right, it was pretty sad, not at all what I was expecting. Kind of blown away by how well done it was for such a short film. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | yeah it really was well done, you really do get attached to the characters without knowing them for
even a half an hour. and it was basically made by a single guy on one computer. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | and i'm just a really emotional person so i think things like that hit me a lot harder than most people. |
DougTheRanter
05.03.12 | It didn't hit me hard, I'm sort of the opposite, I like really emotionally jarring things because they generally don't move me. When they're able to though, I know that they're very well done. I was kind of blown away by where it went and it's totally impressive that one guy could have done that on his own. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | yeah he's done some other stuff to, people are talking about him becoming the next miyazaki. he did 5 centimeters per second and a few other films, most of them are pretty short. i actually haven't seen any of this other stuff that i can remember but i plan to soon. |
TheBuzzKiller
05.03.12 | you guys have to watch Madoka Magica. Basically its the evangelion of magical girls, just imagine sailor moon but really twisted and dark, and its pulled off masterfully |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | alright thanks dude, i'll check it out. |
DougTheRanter
05.03.12 | I might have to look into that, I'm looking for stuff to watch over the summer, so far I have Fate/Zero, some of Higurashi, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Evangelion and a couple of movies. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | i haven't seen fate/zero but the rest of those are all great. |
DougTheRanter
05.03.12 | @BuzzKiller That show was great, episode 3 is probably one of the best episodes of any anime that I've seen. |
DougTheRanter
05.03.12 | I've watched like the first four episodes of Fate/Zero, it's pretty good, but I'm not entirely sure what to expect of the rest of it. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | if you haven't you should check out stuff by satoshi kon, he's probably my favorite anime director. he passed away pretty recently, but he left behind some real masterpieces, especially paranoia agent. paprika, perfect blue, millenium actress and tokyo godfathers are all directed by him as well and they're all among the best anime films in my opinion. |
DougTheRanter
05.03.12 | The only one of those that I've seen any of is Perfect Blue and I was pretty impressed by what I saw. |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | yeah that was his first movie, and its one of my favorites. he was able to work with a much bigger budget later in his career so stuff like paprika is amazing from an animation perspective, and paranoia agent (his only series as the rest of his work is all in films) is probably in my top 5. its only 13 episodes so you should definitely give it a chance, its one of the best psychological/mindfuck animes out there and its visually gorgeous. |
DougTheRanter
05.03.12 | I'll definitely check it out then. Thanks for the recs |
auberginedreams
05.03.12 | no problem. |

05.05.12 | where the fuck is Cowboy Bebop? |
climactic
05.05.12 | i liked 1 |
fulgrim
05.05.12 | read the first few manga for 1, thought it was pretty good. Will have to watch the anime soon. |
auberginedreams
05.05.12 | the anime is great, and it follows the manga really closely. i've read up to about the 7th volume of the manga and its almost exactly the same so far. and i totally forgot about cowboy bebop when making this list, i should have spent a little more time on it because i definitely forgot about a few things, i could have expanded it to a top 30 or something.
i can understand why someone would dislike school days, but the way it all leads up to the climax in the last episode was great in my opinion, i've never seen anything that transforms from a lighthearted romantic comedy into straight up horror by the end of the series, other than maybe shadowstar narutaru. |
Katechon
05.05.12 | No Akira, Bebop, Champloo, Berserk, Trigun, or Hellsing? Lame. Also, too much new school shite. |
liledman
05.05.12 | death note was such a disappointing series.
i highly recommend bakemonogatari and its follow up, nisemonogatari, as well as sayonara zetsubo sensei. witty, interesting style, and at times, hilarious. |
HitlerIsGod
05.05.12 | death note was great up until L died. not that i have a problem with him dying, its just the way they handled the story after they killed him off was retarded. they introduced some half-assed, boring new characters and carried it on longer than it needed to go. Light should have succeeded in his plan after L died, either that or L should have caught him. |
liledman
05.05.12 | yeah even after probably the first 15 episodes it just turned stupid. was really good at the start, and went totally down hill. |
KeithStone582
05.05.12 | good list. 3 and 11 are amazing. I would also add Wolf's Rain, Cowboy Bebop, and Ouran Highschool Host Club. |

KeithStone582
05.05.12 | and Trigun. Must never forget Trigun. |
KritikalMotion
05.05.12 | strange list
weird seeing 13 near 10 heh
brotherhood is so much better than original, only thing missing is the great chimera scene at the
beginning and more of a attachment to certain characters due to certain events..
should watch texnolyze if you can handle completely bleak and depressing stories. also
bakemonogatari is one of the best recent animes
also no GITS?

"should watch texnolyze if you can handle completely bleak and depressing stories. also bakemonogatari is one of the best recent animes also no GITS?"
yeah i've started texnolyze, i need to finish it. if you haven't seen haibane renmei or serial experiments lain you should check them out as some of the same people worked on them. and i could never really get into GITS tbh, the movie was alright but the series got kind of boring for me, maybe i should try it again.

auberginedreams

fat nasty trash includes: Elfen Lied, Detroit Metal City, the latter half of Death Note, School Days, Lain (not bad but I seriously fall asleep everytime I watch it), Speed Grapher, FMA the original, and Haibane Renmei, and a few I don't particularly like but aren't great.
the good ones are 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11, 14, 18, 20, and 25

auberginedreams
05.14.12 | "lol implying that dbz isn't good"
