I Like Metal, I Guess...

I've always had a strange relationship with metal music. Years in the past I flat out couldn't get used to it, but after adjusting to harsh vocals I've been able to get into some things. The thing is, I can appreciate a lot of metal music, but most of it just doesn't do anything for me. Some of my friends are obsessed with metal, and my closest friend loves melodeath and their favorite band is Scar Symmetry, but I just can't relate to them at all.
1Amia Venera Landscape
The Long Procession

Easily my favorite metal(ish) album. The combination of soaring post-rock melodies
and massive, crushing and dissonant riffs works so well.
2Animals as Leaders
Animals as Leaders

The wanky guitar stuff is kind of cool to me. Not a favorite, but fun to listen to.
3Between the Buried and Me
Colors

Probably the first metal band I got into. They don't do much for me now, but I still
enjoy a listen here and there.
4Botch
We Are the Romans

This somewhat draws me because of the dissonant riffs, which seems to be
something I look for.
5Cloudkicker
Beacons

I like djent, though I certainly don't think terribly high of the style. Haven't listened
to this much but I like it.
6Deftones
Diamond Eyes

Yeah this is pretty cool.
7Isis
Oceanic

Can't have a list like this without Isis. Someone would disown me if I didn't put
them on here.
8Mastodon
Crack the Skye

Not among my favorites, but I first saw them live and thought they put on a really
good show. Oh yeah, I also saw Converge at that show.
9Neurosis
The Eye of Every Storm

Obligatory.
10Oh, Sleeper
Children of Fire

This is pretty much the only metalcore I truly enjoy. A few of my friends listen to
almost all metalcore, and none of it does anything for me, save for these guys.
11Periphery
Periphery

Pretty enjoyable. Their stuff gets boring after a while, but it's nice for walking
around campus or something.
12Rosetta
Wake/Lift

The band that really got me into harsh vocals. I absolutely love Mike Armine's style.
13System of a Down
System of a Down

I don't really admire these guys too much, but when a friend puts them on in the
car I can enjoy it.
14Tool
Lateralus

I have a love/hate relationship with Tool. I can't deny they are talented and that I
enjoy some of their songs, but for some reason I just don't appreciate them overall.
15Underoath
Define the Great Line

Not entirely metal, but I do enjoy this album quite a bit. Although the awe of my
first listen has certainly worn off.
