[2] Full Metal Alchemist was great but maybe too mainstream for you (first anime I saw besides the Miyazaki movies which I ALSO RECOMMEND) DEFINITELY watch Now and Then Here and There (if you liked Grave of the Fireflies, psychological stuff) I rec'd Wolf's Rain and Ergo Proxy on another anime list, which are imperfect on the main character front but fall well along the alley of these anime... And if you're looking for a shoujo one that's still good try Full Moon wo Sagashite, the manga's different but they're both great
