When I Was 16, The Word

I was 16 in 2004 well after the genre "Emo" had come to fruition. It was more around the time it was dying, but I remember it was the first real time I heard people using it to describe a style of music. Now don't argue with me about why I'm wrong or how that is not "Emo". I freaking know okay. I was from a small town and when people asked me what an "Emo" band was, I showed them these records.

Evanesce

Dynamic, loud, and incredibly melodic with a whiny singer to boot. This spoke to me...When I was 16.
4The Juliana Theory
Understand This is a Dream

I remember hearing "Music Box Superhero" and just thinking, "That is just...so sad".
3Noise Ratchet
Till We Have Faces

I actually enjoyed their music before it was put out on Militia Group, but Noise Ratchet was dear to my heart back then.
2Further Seems Forever
The Moon Is Down

This was the album that everyone who thought they could sing would sing to in the car. I once had a friend tell me it was "Progressive Emo". I don't know. I don't care. This is still a classic album for me.
1Thursday
Full Collapse

This was usually the gateway album for a lot of kids I knew around that time. I remember hearing it driving home with my then brother-in-law and asking him what he would call this. He said "I would categorize this is a Emo". He went on to explain to me why and still do this day I think it's valid. This was really precedent for me to base what I thought Emo music was at the time.
