A Few Recent Purchases

I realized I haven't been very musically active on here since school has been the monkey on my back/fickle whore in my life, so here are a few albums I've recently purchased and what I have deduced thus far.
1Meshuggah
Koloss

A lot of people have said that it's dull or ill-enthused, but I truly feel some expansion here on the band's part. It really goes to show that they've taken themselves as their greatest influence for this one.
2The Mars Volta
Noctourniquet

These guys really know how to switch it up with each and every release. This one takes a much more electronic approach than we're used to, and they really do make it their own. I feel the album could use a few more "upbeat" moments, as it really seems to hold one pace throughout, which really causes it to drag at times. But there are most definitely some moments here that show some real progression. Much more alt/punk influenced this time around, rather than the "progressive" we've grown so accustomed to.
3Earth
Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I

I don't want to say I'm new to "drone", because not a whole lot of it really tweaks my interest. But the Western-esque vibe really gives this album something special in my eyes. Never got into their earlier, more distortion oriented stuff, but this one has made an impact. Even the artwork adds to the experience for me. On second thought, especially the artwork.
4The Safety Fire
Grind the Ocean

Listening to this as I type this I must say I am impressed with this somewhat fresh take on this type of music. Progressive in every sense of the word, with a group of musicians all perfectly mixed into the end product to really give a sense of their chemistry. I will certainly continue to spin this.
