03.26.12 | can someone lay out for me the dynamics of dissonance and consonance? thanks. |
liledman
03.27.12 | in a lazy, non-detailed nutshell:
consonance = comfortable sounds
dissonance = uncomfortable sounds
the thing to remember is that it is all relative, and even though labels are thrown around in harmony text books about mild dissonance, strong dissonance, etc, there are many variables. timbre, texture, register, intonation, tuning, and of course, musical experience, are all factors in perception of dissonance. dont view them as polar opposites and absolutes.
also being termed melodic is not dependant on dissonance or consonance; a melody can have elements of both. 'melodic' is sometimes an ill-informed substitute for consonant, and as i explained, does not just mean 'pretty sounding'. melody is just intervals arranged horizontally, as opposed to vertically (harmony, ie chords). |
