Writing Music Is Hard

So me and two of my friends have started a new band/project thing. So far the music is coming out as somber sounding indie/alt rock. This my first attempt at singing/playing guitar and writing lyrics. I really have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm just gonna do it. We still need to find a bassist, and hopefully they can sing too. Here's a couple of influences from different people in the band.
1As Cities Burn
Come Now Sleep

This is definitely the album shared by everyone in the band as an influence.
I love everything about it from the atmosphere, to the guitar riffs, to Cody's
voice and lyrics, to the way the bass works with the drums, and how the
drums always fit a part perfectly.

Catch For Us The Foxes

This is more of a favorite between the other guitarist and I. I love the
grungy parts like the chorus in Paper Hanger. The band is fantastic, and
Aaron's lyrics never fail to captivate me. There's some pretty nifty guitar riffs
on this one, too.
3Mineral
EndSerenading

This a more recent influence of mine, and I'm turning the other guitarist
onto it as well. I love the simplicity and beauty of the songs on this CD. It
always reminds me of just laying on the ground and staring into the sky
thinking about everything and nothing at the same time.
4Pedro The Lion
Control

This is definitely another huge influence for all of us. The story is great and
David Bazan's lyrics/voice somehow come across as sarcastic and sincere at
the same time. It's just the perfect combination of slow guitar driven indie
rock and good lyrics.
5The Black Keys
Brothers

The only person really into this band is our drummer, but I can dig the
bluesy, fuzzed-out riffs and straightforward songs.
6Mew
Frengers

This band is quickly becoming a favorite of mine, and our other guitarist has
been into them for a while. Aside from Jonas's beautiful melodies and
harmonies, they just know how to write sweet songs, and just when you
think a part is getting good, they switch it up and transition to an even
cooler passage. I love the weird rhythms they use and the out-of-nowhere
that they pull off. They also have the capability of writing simple, catchy,
pop-rock songs that don't sound overly sugarcoated or fake.
7Brand New
Deja Entendu

Everyone else has said enough about this band. But I like this album in
particular for songs like Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades, Play Crack The Sky,
Guernica, and The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot.
8Explosions In The Sky
The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place

Everyone knows what this band sounds like. Beautiful climaxes and all that,
duh.
9Thrice
Beggars

Just good rock songs on this album. I love Dustin's voice/lyrics and the way
the band grooves together. It's crazy how they have all matured with each
other. Eddie's bass playing is awesome as usual.
10Radiohead
In Rainbows

I'll admit, I'm just a casual listener of this band. I don't know every song
from any of the albums, I just listen to their discography on shuffle and
never skip past a song. They're quirky enough to keep it intresting, but also
are just fantastic songwriters. This is more of a shared influence between
the drummer and I.
11La Dispute
Wildlife

This album is very good, and fun to listen to. I especially enjoy how they
stripped it down a little for this and went for the simple approach as
opposed to the spontaneity that was Somewhere At The Bottom.... I like
the storytelling, and especially the drums. Brad is a fantastic drummer,
probably my favorite in all of post-hardcore, and Adam Vass is a terrific
bassist. They work together very well, and then you have the always
polarizing Jordan Dreyer exposing his emotions over the top of everything.
He often delivers his lines in a much more subtle and dynamic way on this
album, though, and I think it pays off.
12Hawthorne Heights
The Silence In Black And White

Okay, so this totally isn't an influence, but both the guitarist and I were
jamming this a lot back when we met like 7 years ago, when I was dating
his sister. This is the first band we ever were into together so it's super nostalgic. Sometimes we'll all break into a cover of The Transition and all
start crying. I know, totally gay.
