03.14.12 | Mad props for Monster. And Radiohead next to it. The anime Ergo Proxy actually has 'Paranoid Android' as its ending OST, and it's not a bad one either. If you like psychological ones (which list is full of) you might enjoy it, although it's not perfect. Also seen Elfen Lied, FMA, Monster, some Code Geass, some Death Note, read some Gantz...
Recommendations then: Lain, Ergo Proxy, Wolf's Rain, Darker than Black? I found Lain hard to watch and skipped around, I know patience can reward though. If you're into manga too: Banana Fish, ...Freesia? Gotta be more than ready for that one.

I think the only two arcs I cared about in Naruto was when Sasuke saved Naruto early on, and the Itachi mystery and
reveal. Dang but between and after all that is so much filler. I HATE the side arcs. Thank you FMA for ending at the right
place. That makes one of them. |

03.14.12 | Over-hyped? I rarely see it mentioned on the internet, and when I do it usually has mixed reviews.
I think Ergo Proxy has enough in it (the history of proxies, the robot virus, the corruption arcs) to merit a watch for people who like the genre (post-apocalypse, psychological, mystery). I may have been swayed by the music and gritty atmosphere, but I very much enjoyed it while watching even if I absolutely agree about the character development complaint. That was just wasted potential. I have the same complaints about Wolf's Rain but still found the side characters compelling when the main one was dull. I know very few perfect anime (besides perhaps Monster and perhaps FMA - not even Elfen Lied, should I really feel sympathetic for Lucy in Elfen Lied after finding out why she did what she did to Kouta, even if the rest of her character arc was compelling? etc.). |

03.15.12 | I guess Ergo Proxy was one of the first of those type (post apocalyptic) that I've watched, so it was cooler back then. Pretentious yes but honestly if an anime (or video game, or whatever) has a good atmosphere I can watch characters wander around all day doing nothing. Just wish they resolved their setups in more satisfying ways. Loved the child robot though.

The Cat Returns, Whisper of the Heart, maybe something Yamadas?
But to be honest Miyazaki and the rest of the Studio Ghibli films do tend to have more character focused, personal films despite the magic.
And the direction has that focus too - a lot of quiet moments. If you find a better 'slice of life' one I'd be impressed. I'd check out the list if you make it.

Immortal Rain also very good
Many cute one-shot or short manga though (Watashi no Shiawase na Jikan), the longer ones like Kimi ni Todoke or Dengeki Daisy or Wallflower Girl or Vampire Knight eventually and inevitably just lose it
Honestly I don't know many original school/slice of life manga, and know more 'slice of life' asian dramas (Taiwanese, Korean mostly) than anime
